This is attained near the end of Chapter 6: Down in a Hole upon reaching the excavator. First use the coal bucket (wooden box) to create a bridge/trampoline on the left side. Use this to get up to the knob on the front of the excavator. Tie a knot. Jump back down and untie all the knots in the bucket, and move it all the way to the right (under the arm). Now get to the top of the excavator, inside the cockpit, lower the seat, and pull the lever. The arm will swing down, destroying the coal bucket and moving the rocks as part of level progress. There will be a secret remaining in the place of the box. The technique can be seen in the following video at 9:23:

Anyone not had this unlock?
I have smashed the crate with the excavator, collected the secret and finished the level. No achievement, even though the picture frame to start the level shows 5 of 5 secrets found. I have tried playing the level again and going through the motions, obviously the secret was gone second time round but still nothing. Annoying.

EDIT: I ended up deleting my game data everywhere, uninstalled the game, reinstalled it and played through the game again and this time it unlocked no problem.

The achievement is located in the 6th chapter called "Down in a hole".
At the last checkpoint you will find the excavator.

Basically you have to do the following steps:
1. Pull the wooden box to the far left
2. Build a trampoline inside the box to reach the first knob a tie and knot
3. Jump down and untie all knots of the wooden box
4. Move the wooden box to the far right until it hits the shovel
5. Know make your way to the top of excavator
6. Swing inside the cockpit and use the lever underneath the seat to lower it
7. Use the lever to let the arm swing down and destroy the wooden box

At the end of Chapter 6: Down in a Hole, you'll find an excavator (of all things) and a box of coal. The collectible is found in the box of coal.

After using the box to climb up the front of the excavator, climb down the backside of the excavator and push the box up against the pile of dirt to the right. Then, use the yarn that you leave everywhere to climb back up the excavator and pull the lever in the cockpit. The arm will break open the box of coal leaving behind the lovely collectible.

This achievement is in Chapter 6, "Down in a Hole". This will be at the very end of the chapter where you find the excavator machine. When you reach the excavator go to the right and find the wooden box. Go ahead and pull the wooden box all the way to the left and build a yarn bridge/trampoline in the box. Jump up to the fist knob you can jump to and tie a knot with . Now drop down, untie the yarn bridge/trampoline and push the wooden box all the way to the right near the shovel. Now go back up to the knob you jump up to by pulling yourself up with and pushing up with the left thumbstick. Get to the top of the excavator and hang down inside of it and swing to the inside. Swing all the way to the floor where there is a lever/knob there. Use that lever to lower the seat inside the cabin. Then jump up on the seat and pull the lever up top with your lasso. This will release the excavator arm and if you placed the wooden box in the right spot, destroy the box to reveal the secret inside and unlock the achievement!
