How to unlock the Roof runner achievement in Unravel Two - Definitive Guide

I found this to be by far the hardest speedrun of the six main levels. I probably spent more time practicing and working on this one than I did on the other five combined.

The gold medal time is 13:00. At first, that seemed absurd. I had runs where I thought I did a decent job getting through the level quickly and they were over 14 minutes. How the hell was I going to shave off another minute?

A few of the other levels have some decent skips that can save you 30 seconds or more. I was unable to find anything at all on this level of that magnitude. The only way I was able to beat the goal time was to practice each section enough so that I could get through them as efficiently as possible without making any significant mistakes.

My successful run was pretty solid as it beat the gold time by over 20 seconds:
I suggest trying to emulate my run as I believe I’ve approached each section in the best way possible.

A few tips:

-Hold Y during the opening scene so that your characters join together and are a single character when you gain control in the next room.

- Once you slide through the pipes and reach the lower area with a cutscene of the shadowy people coming out of the building, run all the way to the right and as soon as you see the camera start moving, jump and begin running to the right. If you aren’t immediately quick here, you won’t get ahead of the moving fire enemies and will lose a cycle and therefore a bunch of time.

- When you launch out of the devices that shoot air, you are stunned briefly when you land. But if you press Y in midair to separate your characters, the second character won’t get stunned and you can control him immediately.

And other than that, everything is pretty straightforward. Practice. Persist. You’ll get it.

I was able to get this to work consistently. And I always reacted to the screen shifting and would jump as soon as I saw the screen start to move.

Pausing the game doesn't stop time from accumulating. I feel like I saw someone say in another solution or in a forum thread that if you open the xbox guide, it stops time, but I never tested so I can't confirm.

I don't see them lowering the times on a game that's almost two years old and honestly, not that difficult with some practice.

After a while i startend trying again today. After 6 tries i gave up again. There is really no room for error. Even a few second slip up and you will not make it. I got 13:10 but that is the best i can get stil. This one is really a pain in the ass.

Thanks for the tips I thought I was never going to get this. I made several errors including a complete mess up of the final section with the air pipes trying to set them up properly. But still I completed in 12:56 to my amazement.
My advice to anyone struggling would be to keep going even after a few slip ups, don't always be tempted with restarting the level after your first mistake. You can still make the time if you do other sections well. Good luck.

Finally got it. Shaved off a few seconds with a skip I found elsewhere. You can just drop down the pipe where the first electricity is and make it to the right. Timing is tight but doable. Good luck

The skip for the first electric section is fantastic and reliably achievable. This chapter is still driving me nuts though, 13:00 is such a tight time for a game with loosey-goosey game play.

if you guys dont mind using skips/glitches i highly recommend using the skateboard launch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WObmXof6HJw&t=928s
you dont have to get a super high launch like in the speedrun, if you are able to skip 50% of the playground you should be good.
and i found it a bit easier to play all the other levels first and come back to this one later.

How does that skateboarding are glitch work? Are you just placing one yarn on top and one underneath and then trying to bring them together using LT?

By FFX Brotherhood on 23 Apr 2021 21:56
After attempting the glitch for about 45 minutes, I couldn't get it to a point that it was easily replicable. Results varied in that sometimes I couldn't launch at all, other times it launches you in the wrong direction, and if it does launch you it doesn't launch you very far. There were a few occasions where it worked but it seemed too random and sporadic to be viable. I wouldn't suggest anyone really banks on using the skate board jump to make the rub unless you've prayed to RNGesus

I found the "wallclimb" glitch. https://youtu.be/pNY-KGmGJCE i get 13:24 with it. I don't know why only 13:24 maybe the starting loading screen is too long on Xbox One (S)

First Try Xbox Series X 12:48 with wall climb glitch.

Wow, this was an extremely tight run at 12:53. I made a single 4 second error. I primarily followed the above video, but it wasn't enough with my Xbox One S and the dang load time. Restarting the level after loading did not appear to work either. I used the wall climb glitch as posted above by Sambaweb. I used it in most places there was a vertical wall, probably around a dozen times. Would not have got the gold time without it. I practiced the jump over 40 minutes straight before actually attempting a real run. Transcribed below for Xbox controls:

A neat way to bypass certain puzzles by using this simple technique. Just jump against a wall while fused and holding the LT. Then as you stick to the wall press Up on the Analog stick then press Y followed by the A. Then keep alternating them while holding up to keep climbing.

I just spent the last 12 or so hours practicing and attempting this. I kept getting stuck around 13:20-13:45 but when I read the comments here and started trying the wall climb method, that was the difference maker. I was able to squeeze out 12:54 by climbing at a couple parts. Phew. That was absolutely brutal

After messing with the skateboard glitch for a while this method seems to be the most consistent. Ended up getting a 8:32 on this run lol https://clips.twitch.tv/HedonisticViscousDotterelMingLee-tAU...

I tried the skateboard glitch but I wasn't hitting it consistently so I went to grinding out the level normally. My best time was 13:49. I was doing a run and my first big mistake was at the skateboard ramp so I said screw it, let me try the glitch on this run. Skateboard catapulted me to the pulley part, saving about 2:15 seconds. I finished the level with 11:56. Achievement unlocked! Holy heck that was difficult!

Tried the skateboard glitch to see what it’s about - can get the one yarny on top of the other on the board like in the clip shared by oH Price but as soon as I start to climb back up, the top yarny just slides off (I’m holding LT)

I recorded a clip of the top shared by BenL72 for skipping the first electric area. I found you needed to pause slightly before pushing right after dropping. The clip includes a fail then success attempt.

Hey, guys. I'm thinking about playing this game this year (it's been on my backlog for a while) Would you say that playing this co-op makes those speedruns easier or not very much?

@princit In my opinion is it much easier to do solo, but if your partner is as good as you and you both know exactly what to do it may be easier in co-op.

Just started the game today, took about 10 attempts using this video, final time of 12:49. Not as bad as I thought it would be based on the ratio & comments lol

If this is the hardest, I'm glad it's out of the way already haha thanks Sully.

Honestly it doesn’t feel remotely worthwhile to go for this achievement legit. I like the goal of the achievement, and I like that it is hard, but honestly the time limit on this one borders on bullshit for a game where there really is not much movement tech (or general tech) to speak of and has unskippable cutscenes that inpede on your ability to run the level as many times as you want (seriously, fuck this level for forcing you to wait a minute before you can try again). The abundance of 12:5X times on here (with the 12:39 being the quickest glitchless one here) says it all I think; the par time really should’ve been at the very least 13:30, that or 14:00 would’ve struck a better balance than a 13:00.

Great video and tips. Even using the wall-climb, I was consistently clocking around 13:20-13:30. Spent an hour practicing with the skateboard launch, and then started speedruns. Every run I did 3 attempts at the launch, and if I didn't get it I just kept going for the practice.
Managed to get a perfect first-half, and then a perfect skate launch - it threw me all the way into the room just before the final area with the fans. Ended with an 8:50.

I got 13:24, then 13:15 and then 13:11. Each time using the skateboard glitch and making a few simple mistakes that cost me the time from getting gold. After around 10 hours I managed to get just over 10 minutes and I got very lucky with the skateboard glitch as it launched me straight into the window all the way to the right. There was no chance I would have got this without the glitch but it was so hit or miss where I would be launched.

Interesting time save with the shadow cutscene after the pipes, the timing is killer so far for me. Did you get that consistently or it felt luck based? The timing is definitely about 3/4 a second before the camera starts moving, I’ve tried immediately after and it’s way late. So I tried spamming a and moving right which helped a bit but still not fast enough. Really need to save that cycle to have enough wiggle room

Phew tough one, really nerve wracking to not mess up. Had what felt like a perfect run bar maybe a few seconds of error and got 12:51.

Few tips for future players that I found helpful In this vid: for the shadow skip that he does in video, I waited a quarter of a second after the last fire leaves the screen on the right To make the timing. Waiting for the screen to move was always too late for me, you really need to be immediate.

Also this comes down to a near perfect run so make sure to do the little tricks he does like at 2:12 where you jump to the left to avoid an extra swing, etc. You can also pull both characters midair in a jump sometimes if you get the right momentum by pulling the other character with LT mid jump but it’s risky a bit. Focus on perfecting each section first like any standard speed run achievement, then re watch and see what little time savers you can be doing to save those extra seconds.

You can have your own opinion on the time (mine with this now done is that it feels out of touch with the rest of the gold medal targets - those took 4 hours collectively; this one took 6) but the fact you have to wait 70 fucking seconds for another crack at the gold is on the tier of inexcusable sin as far as speedrun design goes; the 20-40 seconds waits on the other levels as is is really, really pushing it. If that shit had to be endured in "Trackmania Turbo" (or the new "Trackmania" for that matter) I’d bet a stupid amount of money that that completion rate would be at best half what it is now. And besides, if you need a breather, pause the game. Simple as that.

P.S Also that 6 hour figure means that this achievement ended up being harder for me than getting the Trackmaster medal in 175 and 180 in "Trackmania Turbo" (which both took me 5 hours each), debatably two of the three hardest tracks in the game, so… yeah.

^ Lmao, it's not even that hard my guy.

The only annoying part at all is the near beginning where you have to jump over the box during the cutscene outside with the dudes coming down the stairs.

Other than that, none of it is truly difficult. You can 100% mess up a bunch of small things if you get past that box jump.

The people that think it's hard are people like you who get upset about dumb things.

The cutscene in the beginning: Who cares? It only happens on 1 level, and it gives you some time to get ready, or in your case, gives you time to sit and be angry about it and in turn just makes you do worse because you're too emotional.

The time: It's clearly fine, because myself (obviously a different account), and many other had no issues doing it legit. Took me 7 tries the first time I ever did it 2 years ago, and 3 tries just two weeks ago when I did it for a buddy of mine.

13:30 would've been far too easy, which is why this game has a well deserved ratio, and separates the men from the boys.

A game that actually takes skill, effort, and determination. A game that you can actually be proud of when you finally get that completion.

Or, just sit in the comments making excuses for you lack of skill instead of trying to improve.

The funniest part since I just check out your profile: You just started the game... Why are you even trying to go for the hardest achievement? Play the game and ENJOY IT first. Then do the no death runs, THEN try for the gold medals when you actually have a good grasp on the mechanics.

Jesus Christ. 2 hours in, going for the hardest achievement in the game, and then whining that you're not good enough to do it, when you haven't even given yourself enough time to even acquire the skills necessary.

It's 100% doable. It isn't as hard as you think. Trying to attempt it right away is exactly why you're failing. You haven't even BEATEN any other levels and you're trying to do this already lmao

But based on the fact that you started 2 days ago, put barely 2 hours into it, and are already whining on here about how "hard" it is... Shows me that you're not suited for this type of challenge.

Probably best to just quit while you're behind.

This is by far the toughest Gold, I put off doing it for a long time because I didn't want to grind it. Thanks to the speedrunning community, there is now a trick that can shave up to 6-7 minutes off of your time.

The Skateboard launch can send you all the way to the final cut scene if you are lucky enough. You set up the trick by having one yarny on top of the skateboard and the other underneath. Using the Yarny on the bottom, pull on the Yarn with LT and Jump. Took me about 5 or 6 tries, but when I got it it bypassed the next 2 sections and I saved 5 or 6 minutes.

This is a luck based trick, you will likely have to reset many times, some launches will send you a few feet, others will send you straight up or backwards. You can gauge for yourself whether the time you spent setting up the trick, and the distance you were launched is good enough, otherwise reset the checkpoint.

I don't know how to post links, but here is the clip of me getting it. I ended up with an 11:03, even after a few failed launches.

This is the furthest I got with it, but my set up took too long and I wasn't able to unlock the gold.

Since this is pure luck based, it may be easier just to get good and execute the run normally with no faults, but here is a fun alternative.

My best time is 13:07 so far 😰 however looking through youtube there is way to avoid tying the knots after the first steam vent. Perfecting that on my switch gameplay before I go on to do it on xbox the rest I can get almost flawless. The 13:07 killed me inside when I saw it on lol

UPDATE on that I FINALLY got it in 12:58 Felt like the worst run I've ever done 😱.
Took a ton of practice. With the skateboard I joined both characters together pushed it to the far left then jumped on gave me enough momentum to reach the other side of say shaved a couple second of my time.

My opinion: do not, by any means, waste your time trying to do this without the skateboard glitch. I might only be saying that because I hate these type of achievements and I saved this one until last so I'm absolutely sick of playing this game, but I also think the margin of error they leave you with the 13 minute requirement is at best... really stupid.

So if that's where you're at, here's all I know about how I activated the glitch: get one guy on each side of the skateboard, hold down left trigger, and push the skateboard up the side of the ramp until the guy on the top falls under the skateboard. Keep holding left trigger, drag the skateboard back down the ramp if you need to, and jump the other guy on top of the board and walk him to the edge of the board where the other guy is. I don't think jumping is part of what triggers it but if you need to jump around to get into position that's fine, and you still might end up setting it off. After some practice you should be able to see that the glitch activates as you walk the top guy to the edge of the board (again still holding left trigger) so just keep fiddling around and walking back and forth over there until it launches you. And keep doing the motions after you launch because sometimes the skateboard sticks and I think you might go further (?), but eventually the yarnies will come back into view and if you're holding the stick to the right you'll continue flying that way until you hit the ground, sometimes many screens later (not just at the end of the outdoor section). Here's a video of me trying and nailing a good launch that didn't end up being a successful run, but you'll get the idea:

That's all I got. It took me about an hour of trying, and my successful attempt came after a failure where I was able to reload the checkpoint and try again, so if you mess up but you're able to reset and try again then go for it, otherwise you have to restart the level and sit through all the... beautiful cut scenes again.

To unlock this trophy you have to do a speedrun in gold medal time for chapter 2. In order to do so a second player is very helpful to do things simultaneously.

However, you might not have a second player so here are some general pieces of advice: Do not hesitate at all; you can do nearly all of the enemy sections in a fluent way if you just go for it. The same applies for tricky platforming sections. Whenever possible connect both Yarnies into one by holding when close together.

Video Guide. Credit for the video goes to LucasDiasC.

Like all other gold medals, the solo will be close, but very, very difficult. The passage must be so perfectly “polished” with all the shortcuts that it will be almost impossible to do alone. Believe me. Only the last level can be taken solo without much stress. All the rest only with a partner through Sharp Play or locally. The time savings with a partner are enormous. In solo, the drawdown is 2 minutes at each level if everything is done perfectly.

A few tips.
1. When you jump into the steam pipe (closer to the end of the level), you need to press triangle so as not to watch the animation of how they come to their senses after landing. This glitch only works if you are sitting next to each other. This saves 3 seconds.
2. Every time you pull yourself up to Yarny with , it is better to additionally press the jump button several times. Thanks to this, you climb to the top faster.
Sometimes I was able to make a high jump this way, which allowed me to go around an obstacle rather than climb over it. But I still don’t understand how to do this correctly.
3. Very often the levels show what is happening in the background. At this point the camera is not looking at you, but towards the end of these videos you can begin to move, although you are not yet visible. This also saves precious seconds.

This level is the only one in which it’s impossible to go solo (in my opinion). My time was 13.02 the fastest, although in other levels I even died and everything was exactly gold. As a result, with a partner, after 20-30 repetitions, we managed to complete it in 12.51. Most of the time I ran on my own, to places where I had to wait, my partner continued to do everything.
And in order to have time to run past the enemies on the street, after the cutscene (in which people come out of the entrance), you need to run to the box that is behind the screen and take a step back, then when all the enemies are caught (they will fly away in batches), the last one will be a single enemy , as soon as he disappears from the screen, immediately jump 2 times. When the camera shows the character, he should already be at the first enemy.

At the Shelter level (and as in the entire game), most actions designed for two are performed according to the principle: one does it, the other stands and waits. By completing this level with a partner, you will save a maximum of ten seconds, doing everything just as perfectly as solo. Just keep in mind that you will make twice as many mistakes as if you were playing alone. On Western forums, people also agree that it is easier to make gold alone.
I watched videos on YouTube with the passage to gold. Whether in co-op or solo, with perfect runs, the results, plus or minus a few seconds, are the same. The best time in a single playthrough is 12:43, in a co-op 12:35. Personally, I did it in 12:51. It’s unclear what 2 minutes we’re talking about. The hint above is just misinformation.

1. Video guide (en) with a glitch with a skateboard.
- 1 Arnie under the skate near the left wheel
- 2nd on a skateboard above above 1st
- 2nd clamps , if it worked and the skate flew, the 2nd continues to hold and click on controls flight path
If successful, then you can at least fly to the exit.
2. General advice that will make the whole game less difficult - learn to climb vertical walls ( Video guide (en)): at the wall + stick up + + fast alternation And (I was just spamming simultaneously).
