On the first level when you get to the tree boss use the dash button to go behind him and then just spam the X button on him. I used Sandmonk (the blue skinned character) but probably doesn't matter. The boss has a melee attack that can hit you out of the combo but you can easily get a 20 to 30 hit combo at some point.

Great solution. First time I played through this with Monkey, kept getting knocked out. Played again with Sandmonk, got up to x51 when the tree died. Easy done.
