How to unlock the Counter Grandmaster achievement in Unsouled - Definitive Guide

(Massive thanks to Infamous for the tips with this one.)

Ah, Counter Grandmaster. This absolute bastard.
First off, let’s get a very easy-to-make misconception out of the way: this achievement IS NOT for total Chain Counters, it is for consecutive Chain Counters. As a result, I would very highly recommend defeating Kamas and getting the Active Soul that comes from that fight first before tackling this, it’ll make a third of this achievement much easier to do. If you have not fought him yet refer to the guide found at
UnsouledDesert StormThe Desert Storm achievement in Unsouled worth 190 pointsDefeat Kamas.
for information in regards on how to find him.

Now, there’s probably a few other places that could work for this, but the one I ended up doing this in is in Act 3. Basically, take the route that gets you to the Twisted Soul (go through the gate that is marked as destructible via Soul Focusing) and go through the whole puzzle to get outside. Take care of all enemies on the right side of the outer-box-esque area, go up the stairs, and take out both spearmen. Head up, go all the way to the right (but don’t go down), and you’ll see 25 zombies running towards you. Activate the previously mentioned Active Soul, and go to town from there.

Unfortunately I can’t really give any real tips in regards to the execution of this one (though CrAk ll does recommend a metronome set at 141 BPM to help, with other recommendations pointing to 143 BPM) aside from practicing the Chain Counter tutorial in the Abyss, but with enough patience and attempts, this can be done. Good luck, you’ll need it.

I had a lot of trouble getting the timing down on master soul difficulty so I ended up using a metronome to help me (lol). When I finally got the achievement it was set to 141 bpm, and that is what I tried to copy to stay on the correct timing. Not sure if this info is particularly useful, but it's what helped me unlock it, good luck.

143bpm and sequencing it into a 4|4 + counting to 4 out loud like a first year in music theory, worked after 10min worth of attempts and a few 17 chain breaks...

also, did this on my first playthrough so without any active souls to help, so you dont need to wait until you restart the game, though idk how easy it becomes with it so...

Having Kamas’ Active Soul gives more lenient timing on the first 7 Chain Counters. Doesn’t make this a joke but is handy.

i went back to this solution hoping i could have some help with the Kamas 8 counters achievement, i just beat him for the first time now and was i supposed to get an Active or the Passive "Soul of Kamas" that does help with counters after a J-Guard?

edit: nvm my degenerate ass did a Quick Restart after getting the Passive Soul to retry the 2nd Kamas achievement so i did not go further in the newly opened room to get the Active.

143 BPM. Used Soul of Bagoe to get it started. No direction on LS, just X in the rhythm.
