How to unlock the Merciful release achievement in Vampyr - Definitive Guide

During Chapter One after taking a ride with Docter Swansea and arriving at the Hospital, head left and you'll encounter two men fighting each other. Speak to the man that stays behind and he will rudely introduce himself as Clay. You'll be given two options during the upcoming tutorial to either EMBRACE or RELEASE him. You'll need to Release Clay for this achievement and kill him.

NOTE: Be warned, releasing Clay will cause the Just Take A Bite achievement to be unobtainable so it's recommended that you create a back-up save.

To get both, either disconnect your Xbox from the internet just before encountering Clay, then delete your save file, reconnect to the internet and have the cloud bring it back.. OR.. immediately after interacting with Clay, go back to the main menu and load your game again if it hasn't saved by this point.

As soon as I unlocked the Just Take a Bite achievement, I noticed it didn't save and I immediately paused and returned to the main menu, then reloaded my recent save, which put me right back to before my encounter with Clay. I was able to get both Clay achievements with just one save file.

This achievement is a bit glitchy. I tried several times to get it and it never would pop or show completed. About 2 weeks after, I didn't even have my xbox on, I was on my pc doing homework, when I got a notification that the achievement popped. Weird.

When you arrive at the Pembroke Hospital for the first time with doctor Swansea you have to go along the dock and meet Clay. That is the first time when you mesmerise person (game tell you to do it). When you have to choose to release him or kill him you need to release him in order to get this achievement.

This is a dual-sided trophy, paired up with:
VampyrHidden TrophyThe Hidden Trophy trophy in Vampyr worth 22 pointsContinue playing to unlock this hidden trophy

Chapter I

After your employment with Pembroke by the hands of Swansea, you'll go along the docks and come across Clayton Cox. This is your introduction moment to the Embrace system as a vampire of London. Should you choose to spare your victims, you will be met with the option to interact with them, do sidequests for some of them, and learn more about their history or even cure them of certain ailments later on. This trophy requires that selfless act, where you take his well-being into greater concern than your own.

Directly after the "At dawn we row" achievement, you will arrive at the hospital. You'll begin walking along the water and find a man who has been stabbed. The game will teach you how to mesmerize civilians and lead them into the darkness to be "embraced" (killed for experience) and to unlock this achievement you must not go through with this by holding after walking him into the alley, letting him live.

Story related, but can be missed.

I suggest making a backup save as soon as you get off Dr. Swansea’s boat when you arrive at the hospital, on either a USB device or on the cloud storage.

When you start making your way to the hospital after you get off the boat, you’ll run into Clay. It will have you mesmerise him and then lead him to a dark area to either embrace him or release him. Choose to embrace him to obtain the trophy Just take a bite and then exit out of the game and use your backup save to overwrite the main save. Load up the game again and choose to release Clay for this trophy.

If you choose to go with embracing Clay for your playthrough, know that it will count against you for the game-spanning trophy Not even once, as you will have killed Clay.

After landing on the boat with the doctor and the priest, get clean clothes, upload your save to the cloud or to a flash drive, since the game does not provide manual saving, only autosaves. Enter the game and move further along the plot. You will see two bandits fighting, approach the remaining one, communicate, after using hypnosis, lead him into the opening on the left, there is a secluded place there. Next, you will have the choice of *Hug* or *Release*. Click *Release*. After receiving the trophy, go to the PS menu, upload saves to the console from the cloud/flash drive and follow a different scheme for the Just take a bite trophy / Impossible to resist

Fiddling with saves from a flash drive is optional. Checkpoint at the bottom of the stairs. As we got off the boat, I went to Clay, grabbed him and went to the main menu. After loading, I found myself again at the point where, after the boat, we approach the stairs. Again he went to the little man and generously saved his life.

Can be combined with the "Not a Drop" trophy if you missed it.

I tried to “let go” first, and then returned to the main menu, unfortunately, after loading, Clay was already sitting by the barrels and you could only talk to him. Be careful if you want to take two trophies at once.
