How to unlock the Pale Hearts achievement in Venetica - Definitive Guide

Once you reach the inner city and speak with San she will activate the quest Pale Hearts which relates to killing stone creatures for 8 pale hearts. Three of these are story related.The first is near a dead body on the Inner City Roof Tops. The other seven will not come to life until you return from Africa. The second and third will be when you first get off the ship after returning from Africa. The rest of the locations are as follows:
Arsenal District: Use twilight portal in the sailors room which is across the bridge from Skullbreak tavern.
Arsenal District: Leave the doctors house and take a left.
Outer CIty: In the Hooded Wings garden.
Eastern Villa: In the center of the garden.
Palace: Ground floor

I thought this quest was bugged for me, too. I also had gone on the rooftop to slay the one by the body before beginning the quest. After slaying all the gargoyles, I turned them in, and it only accounted for 7 pale hearts.

On a hunch, I went back to the rooftop to where I fought the first stone lion. There weren't any pieces of him visibly lying on the ground, but I walked around and a looting option appeared for the final pale heart. Returned to San and turned it it and bingo bango.

It might be worth noting that San is the owner of the shop of magical and occult items in the Inner City, the same person who gives the Clear Sky in the Inner City quest.

FWIW, I got the first pale heart before the quest and it still unlocked OK. However, this solution doesn't note the stone bird/lion in the balcony in the Inner City (reachable from the catacombs) and I didn't get the palace pale heart. So...maybe there are 9 and getting them all bugs it?

It is worth noting that if you get the first story one on the roof before you accept the quest from the shopkeeper, it seems to glitch out and become impossible to complete. I gathered them all and tried turning the quest in, no dice.

You get a quest to collect Pale Hearts from San in the Occult Shop in Inner Venice. The Pale Hearts can be found by destroying stone statues that come to life when you walk past them. These only come to life though after you return from Africa.

The eight stone statues can be found:

  • The First statue can be found on the rooftops of Inner Venice near to where you have to meet Tusker to advance the story. This is the only statue that will come to life before you return from Africa
  • As soon as you return from Africa and head back into the Arsenal District, two statues will attack you in the Harbour Area
  • Arsenal District - Exit the Doctor's House and then head left until you come across the statue
  • Arsenal District - This statue can be found on the bridge where you get the Dark Views trophy
  • Doge Palace - This is in the right hand side of the palace when you first enter it.
  • Eastern Villa - In the garden where you find a significant story item
  • Outer Venice - This is right in front of the Hooded Mask guild in the small garden

You get the Pale Hearts quest from San in the Shop of Occult (Inner City, close to the Old Catherdral). San asks you to collect Pale Hearts that you can obtain after killing stone statues. There are eight statues altogether, here are the locations:
- You encounter this as you find a dead body on the roof while approaching Tusker's hideout (part of the main story)
- Once you return from Africa two stone beasts will attack
- In the garden of the Eastern Villa
- In the Arsenal, exit the Doctor's house and go left a few hundred meters
- In the Outer City, in the garden before the Shadow Mask guild
- It is on the bridge where you obtain the Dark Views achievement
- In the West Wing of the Doge Palace
