I found growing chillies with red fertiliser is the way to get coins fast, you get 400 for each full grown chilli.
Plant the chillies close together and use the red fertiliser 3 times.

I've finished both versions (360 & PC) and can confirm that this is the fastest way to make money. Plant 10 chili seeds as close together as possible (the closer together you get them, the less fertilizer you have to use), give them 3 shots of red fertilizer, grow to maturity and sell.
Much faster than farming redhots and A LOT faster than growing any other plant.

The Taffly method is good too, but THIS Chili method is hands down THE most effective. Thumbs up. :)

i attracted the taflies (sp?) and set them on fire to evolve them. they sold for around 2300 coins. If you have the torch, at least 2 flowers and room for more pinatas, they should flock in without much lapse in time. set them on fire, use the watering can on them, then sell away.
I'm a little bit surprised that this hasn't been mentioned yet, as the lazy-gamer's key to chocolate riches: weeds. For me, there were two that worked, depending on the level of my laziness.
1. Poison Ivy. Being a weed, it plants itself, needs no watering, and drops more seeds when the flower is done blooming. The flower head itself is worth 100 coins, and on average the plant drops three seeds, which will then replant themselves. I let my posion ivy garden grow by itself while I watched TV, checking in during commercials to sell the flower heads and extra seeds. Very lazy, very easy.
2. Venus Pinata Traps. The flower head sells for 360 coins. The difference is, as far as my experiences have shown me, the venus pinata trap won't pop itself. You have to hit it with your shovel after the flower has bloomed. Doing this nets you the flower head as well as three seeds (which can be sold for 72 coins each). If you sell two seeds and replant one, you're making five hundred coins per plant.
The second is the method I used to get to 100k coins, because I really hate planting chili's. I used a brand new garden so that I didn't have to worry about sick pinatas, and I had eight plants blooming at once. It took me less than an hour to get all the way to 100k.
So hopefully this is a saner alternative to anyone else annoyed at fertilizing chilis.

Chilis are ok but why not plant something worth $1000 more and takes only a couple mins to grow? What I did was plant Orchids and then fertilize them with Igor's special fertilizer. If you plant 8-10 each trip you will have plenty of time to fertilize each one 3 times and then come back to water them. Just don't plant them too close together or they won't fully bloom and they will lose value. Doing this, without exageration, I made $40,000 in less than 10 mins!
Plant ten Bird of Paradise plants and use orange fertiliser on each one. They sell for 1440 coins each.
Keep talking to Seedos and he will eventually drop it so it becomes available in the shop.

Here's a way if you already have a few thousand coins... Buy 6-8 Orchid Seeds and plant them. If you haven't unlocked Ivor, then immediately use green fertilizer 3 times to each orchid. If you have unlocked him, then use his special fertilizer 3 times as well. You'll get 1800 for each fully grown orchid.
