How to unlock the Super Strategist achievement in Wargroove - Definitive Guide

edit: A lot of the below information may be outdated by the 2.0 patch. Apparently it changed quite a lot. The following video guides were recommended in the comments for newer players. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwzEa4sYj6TmkOfEmnbLf9A/vid...

The developers recently confirmed that only turn numbers contribute towards an S-Ranking. So, throw caution to the wind and focus on speed over limiting casualties for the S-Ranks. Netting an S or A-Rank will also get you 3 stars on that map.

I'm S-Ranking each mission as I play through the campaign before moving on. I may not be the fastest, but I wanted to post them as I did them incase anyone wanted something to aim for. If someone reports a higher turn count still qualifying for an S-Rank I'll edit it in parenthesis after my time.

Also, here is a wonderful playlist on YouTube courtesy of Tully123 showing his S-Rank playthroughs. They should help to give you an idea of what to expect and potential methods to use if you're struggling! The video doesn't embed into the solution since it's an entire playlist, so here are some emoticons for visibility!

It's been reported by other users in the comment section that using the checkpoint system to reload battles will affect the S-Rank requirements negatively. Meaning, if you use the checkpoint system you will only be able to earn A rank. Checkpoints make S rank impossible.

Act 7 Mission 1: 13 turns (14 turns also reported)
Act 7 Mission 2: 18 turns (19 turns also reported)

Epilogue: 37 turns (40 turns also reported)

If anyone wants to contribute their numbers let me know! Especially if you S-Ranked a stage I haven't done, or with a higher number of turns than I!

Most of the campaign missions I managed to get first try, but the side missions seemed much more difficult to hit good times on. Act 7 Mission 2 was particularly brutal, though, and took me about 5 victories until I was quick enough.

If anyone has questions about a particular mission strategy ask in the comments and I can try to help.

+1 from me. Appreciate the effort!

Can you still get S-rank while adjusting difficulty?

Act 2: Side Mission 1 was very tricky, in my opinion.

I can confirm 16 is indeed the upper limit to get an S. My first successful run was 17 turns - earning a useless A. It took me a couple hours and three or four tries to finish in 16.

Fog of War does not lend itself well to strict turn limits.

Act 3 mission 2 it is possible for 21 turns and get an S rank. Just got it at 21 turns thinking i'd get an A but got an S!

Congrats on the achievement! I have Epilogue to do then I'm done. The cutoff for Act 7-2 is 19 turns. 20 turns was an A for me, 19 an S. I think most people who go for this achievement will be stopped in their tracks by this level; it's an absolute monster. I managed to S-Rank it in the most hilarious way. 4 Sparrow Bombs and a Ragna Shield Jump. lol.

For anyone who needs some visual help, I've been uploading videos of the missions since act 2. You may not be able to follow them exactly (the +-5 damage will throw it out and sometimes the AI is random) but you will get a general idea of what is required to S-Rank the mission. See here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRbJUdIxRFYGictXHAeNi...

Good luck everyone!

Thanks!

I agree, that level was an absolute monster. It took me a while to actually beat it the first time, but once I did it seemed to “click” and I was able to repeatedly do it. It all comes down to clever use of Grooves and efficient charging.

Epilogue was a lot easier in my opinion!

If you don’t plan on making a solution I can link to your videos in the main text for visibility and credit you. Let me know!

Yes, when I first tried it I was struggling and dying within a few moves. Eventually I got to a point where I could always reach the end but trying to get to Elodie to finish her off proved problematic. I came up with a backup plan of having Sparrow Bombs waiting and it actually worked; I was surprised. You have a lot at your disposal but also 7 fail states waiting to happen, so it can be somewhat difficult to manage.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but that sounds good! The 37 turns makes it seem like a slog though.

No intention of making a solution; you have all the necessary information here. You're more than welcome to link to them if you like.

There's a Google Spreadsheet at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QbXuFSxqwXd8ENycO0Ci... that has a few confirmed Upper Limit Numbers that you can also cross reference, and if people are able to log their entries for A and S Rank Missions, we might be able to confirm some more!

7-2 might be one of the most brutal missions i've ever played. It took me probably 20-30 tries to complete it even once but thankfully that one time was an S rank!

I didn't see it mentioned but if you look at the map overview (press A on empty tile and select overview), it displays in the top left corner how many turns required for the next rank.
Once you have A rank, it will display the required number of turns to meet S rank.

Also changing difficulty in the options screen explicity tells you which rank is the highest you can achieve at what difficulty.

To get S-ranks you must play on Hard (Default) mode.

7-2 was rough for me as well. Kept getting botched earlier, which is at least fine to quick restart and finetune your starting game. Took 2 or 3 tries after that, wasn't even sure if I'd get it when I did. One thing I can say is really look to manage your grooves late, see whose close to what, the key ones right towards the end for me were ragnas jump and mercias heal. Didn't manage to get kojis sparrows or caesars inspire, but those would've helped too.

One information is essential and I was struggling with the game without it. You can't S-rank a stage loading a previous checkpoint. Now it seems quite obvious, and the game try to explain that when you lose/retry a stage (but the portuguese translation wasn't good explaining that). I think that information is important to be in the solution.

I think some of these have been changed in the February 2020 update: I did not get an S rank on 5-2 or 5-Side-2 with 15 and 15 turns respectively, instead getting an A rank

If you beat the mission post-update and have an A-rank, when replaying the mission overview you can see the S-rank turn requirement in the top right.

Anyone got find updated S rank vids yet? Every one I’ve tried has been off since the update due to the changes in unit cost and gold earned.

There shouldnt be a change to gold earned, in my opinion you can still use old vids and adept strategies on the go. You will need the skill and experience if you want to finish this game. I use this guide for the most part

Perhaps read everything typed instead of cherry picking. There’s multiple videos and written guides that will for example tell you to recruit a character for 500 gold on turn 6 and you have only 350 gold. So you can come up with your own strats but that’s not the point of asking if there’s any new guides is it?

Sorry didnt mean to come of like a jerk. Does following the videos work for you? Because i would get way to many different responses from the AI for them to be helpful, i always just looked at the general strategy and went on my own from there. I just got this achievement and played most of the levels before and after the update. The cost changes dont really effect the strategies that are employed in older videos. Dont get stuck on e.g. buying the unit on turn 6, you can most of the time still get an S even if it takes you until turn 7.

@Villa I so far i've followed the videos, sometimes units can go to a different square of course, but when im short on gold on turn 5 i'll instead recruit on turn 6 and still follow the video just with a few units delayed, so far though everytime i've done that i've gotten A-rank and checked and was 1 turn off S-rank. I have only done this 4 times so far so there are probably some videos it still works on but also some that don't work. I definitely wish I was better at the game, I used to play games like this without any kinda guide all the time in my childhood but lots of the older games didn't have rank requirements (and achievements didn't exist then either)

Yea i dont really like the S-rank requirement in this game, should have been some kind of mix instead of just speed, but you can definitely do it! Just completed the game, with the recent update some of the achievements got easier! This was also one of these games were i got frustrated like a year ago when i started it and when i came back i nearly first try S ranked most missions, cant explain it :'D

@MethodicBR77 i found this the hard way, i failed a mission then i loaded my saved checkpoint and i finished it later below the required runs which should have got me easy "S" but i finished with A!
to anyone planning to S rank, don't use "checkpoint" system

Added in a note about the checkpoint system in bold.

A lot has changed in the game since I originally posted this solution. I hope it's still helpful to some people, but I don't know how accurate much of it is anymore. I'm leaving it up solely so people have a spot to comment and share information relating to it.

@eohjay: i am currently act 6 mission 3, i have s-ranked all previous lvl, some lvls are tougher than other and might take couple of tries..looking at you "ceaser the fluffy commander" :s
but please i want to again highlight that using the checkpoint system will invalid the S-rank and net you only A or lower ranking, depending on ur finished turn, but no matter how fast u were, if u used the checkpoint, say goodbye to S

Agreed - eohjay you need to change your note to:

"It's been reported by other users in the comment section that using the checkpoint system to reload battles will affect the S-Rank requirements negatively. Meaning, if you use the checkpoint system you will only be able to earn A rank. Checkpoints make S rank impossible"

I was just about to come and comment about Red Jams guides before seeing the comment above me.
Following the 2.0 patch in early 2020, a lot of AI changes were made and old guides no longer work well, so I'd highly recommend Rad Jams videos if you're stuck for an S-rank.

I don't know the answer to that. I'm going to keep pushing forward on normal settings - but feel free to try it out and experiment! Once I know the turn value I already have the S-Rank, so I can't really test it. I'd recommend testing it on a short one like Act 2 Side Mission 3 - it's a really tiny map.

Thanks! I'm up into Act 5 now and I have to admit that A2SM1 was probably the trickiest of the bunch so far. I tried many different techniques for getting through it quicker without luck.

As a geneal rule of thumb the Side Missions seem to have a tighter turn limit than the main campaign missions. A lot of the time the campaign missions allow you to bait and gank the enemy commander for a quick win.

Chucklefish confirmed that a small QoL patch will be coming to Wargroove in the near future and among the rest of the stuff will be a screen showing the requirements for S Ranks.

I can't see how 7-2 is possible in 19 turns. I got through everything else in no more than a few attempts, but I've been stuck here for days and I've tried dozens of times to no avail. I had one miracle run that I won in 20 turns, but the stars and planets must have been aligned perfectly because I've not been close since.

Pushing aggressively puts me in bad position and someone always gets killed. Taking it a little more cautiously results in running out of turns. It's just frustrating that I figured I'd eventually get lucky RNG with enemy movement/attacks and my grooves and I haven't.

I feel like I've tried everything and it sucks that I see no other way past this than to keep flushing my time down the toilet and slamming my head against the wall hoping that things eventually work in my favor.

Just frustrated and venting, not expecting any sort of magical help to get me through this.

The solution youtube guides were useful but not so easy to follow as the game has been patched since they were made. The following link is to some recent guides by Red Jams and I found these much easier to follow, replicate and get the S ranks on. They provide some alternate strategies and can hopefully be of use to recent players.

For those who follow the Red Jams videos: AI is unpredictable, even doing the same moves in the video will almost certainly have different results.
This is because all game critics have a 5% RNG which can completely change the course of the game, Especially in act 7 part 2.
Always for those who want to get the S in act 7 part 2: I recommend watching the Red Jams videos but building your own strategy to get to the end of the level with enough turns to kill Elodie, Unfortunately there is a lot of luck involved in finishing it in 19 rounds, keep trying and improving your overall strategy
