Your first set of defense mission comes after mission 5. Simply hold your ground without loosing any generators and it will be yours. unlike previous missions the enemy will come to you from two different direction each shown ahead of time with an arrow so you can move your unit to mount a defense from an attack from that particular direction.
Having your troops near the generators/defense object also keep them near a resupply, if any troops are lost.

During defense missions you are tasked with protecting the three generators that drop near strategic assets. Easiest done on your first defensive mission on Recruit difficulty. The three generators are clustered together on a small plateau, and the defensive area only has two entrances. Your four squads can easily take care of both entrances.
