Just something to note is that animals and temporary followers count to this total. If it can be viewed in the party menu, it counts.

So if you don't want to hire a gaggle of peasants you can instead kidnap some animals and force them to fight on your behalf if you have some rope and go through the effort to capture animals. Or you could just hire peasants like normal. Prisoners do not count.
