This didn't pop for me until I finished the pigman story well after I'd last read a book.

popped for me during the first playthrough with the gun slinger when I read a book that showed "already read" - so it appears you don't even have to have read 50 unique books, so whenever you come across one, especially a book case, just read away and it will eventually pop.
