The way to pet a kemono is to first, Hold 
whilst not moving to crouch and then walk up to a small kemono and then press 
.
Doing this will play a short animation and also give a different reward compared to killing them.
Such as a Ragetail pup giving: Small Kemono skin (Kill) Or a Rodent Bud (pet)
Personally I found Nanohana Hill at Harugasumi Way tends to have a decent pack of small Kemonos to pet.

> go to communication, then press 
then you can see the stat of your pets and others.
