There are 7 different Proving Grounds game types.
With my re-testing of the maps, I tried out a couple different ones. I believe Standard Battle is fastest!
Use Tier 1 tanks--I used the T1 several times as well as a couple other Tier 1 tanks that didn't work as well. The NC-31 and MS-1 worked well though!
The reason Standard Battle works so well is your teammates are all Tier 2, and all enemies except for one of the last are Tier 1. Your teammates can really help clear the map for you!
Each map didn't take me longer than 5 minutes, with the fastest around 3.5 minutes.
And a few pointers to watch out for with Standard Battle enemies--they are the same enemies, in the same places every time. I ended up going through the middle of the little village to take out the LTraktor first--he'll shoot at you, but if you park just below the ridge, he'll always hit the ground.
Then I moved up, took out the FT fleeing back to their base on the left side from the 2nd group of enemies spawn.
Next, I would move towards the base--be careful here though! A Medium I and NC-31 spawn and move towards the front of their base and can do a lot of damage. I recommend hiding underneath the cliff near their base ASAP and waiting for your teammates to kill them, or carefully pop out and kill them. Remember, they will always shoot at your center of mass, so you can stick out and shoot them quite safely!
For the last part, the big worry is the far right side. First there will be a LTraktor, followed by a T2 Light. Both of these can do a lot of damage. I recommend helping kill the LTraktor, then running back down the hill in front of the enemy base and let your teammates kill the T2 Light.
That's what worked for me most effectively.

A very easy way to do this is to take 4 different tanks and either play battle for mines or standard battle with those tanks, thus playing 4 times ( which you stated was skipped, but is easier then offensive.) makes it go quicker.

1. Choose a fast tier 1-3 tank (I picked the Locust)
2. Select Standard Battle.
3. Rush the base straight through the middle.
4. Circle the capture point. Enemies are lousy at aiming.
5. Capture and repeat 4 times!
Clocks in at 2mins 30secs (ish) each time.
Simple!

Rubbish. You die right away just running around the circle. You need to kill the enemies!

Can confirm this is still the best method as of April 2020. I tried on a tier one and was obliterated the first three matches.
Switched to the Locust, called out a few enemies to be attacked and had some allies follow me for added support (Left Bumper, point left thumbstick left - Looking at an enemy this is attack, on an ally this is follow).
I was able to win 4 out of the 5 next matches, all under 5 minutes. I do recommend picking off one or two tanks on the way to the circle (The second match I tried going straight to center instead of pointing out enemies and/or firing on them, and got lit up pretty quickly once I got to the enemy capture point)

They made this achievement much easier in an update. Now, you just need to win forty multiplayer matches, and then stay in a game until the end screen. Do not exit to the garage. If you exit to the garage, you'll get credit for the match (if your team wins.) but you won't unlock the achievement or advance the achievement counter. You can get this in a defeat screen if you previously have won forty matches since the update that changed this achievement.
If you are just going for wins, I recommend playing in the lower tiers. Matches are faster and aggression is more rewarded.
