How to unlock the It's lonely up here achievement in World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap - Definitive Guide
It's lonely up here
The fastest Exp in the game is right when you unlock Endless mode by beating all levels on any difficulty.
The main thing you want to focus on is the Wolf summon trap. Then you should have an effective essance ground trap. 3nd is blade disk mechanical tower. Then the tower that has a skull and most effective against giants because it will heal the wolves when upgraded enough.
Load up the first mission (make sure to move your right analog stick right for x2 speed) on Endless and build all the above towers in the middle where all 3 spawns will have to pass and you want to hold this as long as possible. Make sure to try killing everything except the armored husks on the essence trap.
If you choose the right skills for your character each time you will get further and futher. If you make it past wave 20 you can level over 10 times. I don't recommend waiting until unlocking Tier 3 because it seemed to get much more difficult once I beat tier 3 but I cannot fully confirm it increases the difficulty.
Good luck!

I first tried this right when I unlocked endless when I was around level 21 with about 20 campaign stars. I could not get past wave 8 but it got me decent xp to level up a few times each attempt. I 3-starred a few more levels to upgrade traps more and by the time I was level ~35 with 30+ stars it got easy to get to wave 20+ with no gate damage. Key factors were trap upgrades and my merc's weapon damage. Between maxing out several skills and finding some good loot, I nearly doubled my damage as compared to my earlier attempts which made the chain snare go from pulling mobs to one shot killing the horde through enough waves to get the traps upgraded. So, if you're having troubles, a combo of character levels for skill upgrades, campaign stars for trap upgrades and better weapons/equipment is what you'll need to do. Like any well balanced rpg mechanics, one without the others isn't enough then suddenly it gets easy.

Yesterday went till wave 60 with a level 81 character. Seem can do it till forever so I gave up (bored). The most important upgrade is the Chain snare, max it up as fast as you can (with the two passives). Whit this you can grab 19 enemies with great damage! So you can stand in middle and pull back the enemies if they try to walk to your portal.
I have some videos from my game (at my profile xbox.com), so you can check what I use. Today make a photo what traps I upgraded (Here: https://account.xbox.com/en-us/screenshot/7158c752-16f4-4bf9...). Not on the picture because reseted after game > Essence trap with Upgrade 1 + Essence Collector passive and Enthropic pillar with Upgrade 2 (+2/4m for better heal to the wolves) and the passives (heal and damage both can help you out).
Used Cannon not Gun. Extremly well against hordes with huge damage! And your main problem is the many enemies at the same time, not the 3-4-5 hard ones.
PS: around wave 10 you get 150-200k exp points which is 2 level from 79->81, so around 30 its much more, so each time you start again you get better chance with the new skills.
PS2: If you don't have enough skill points for the traps, you have to go forward in the campaign!

Let me try to give a more comprehensive take on this achievement. You do need to grind out Endless mode.
I tried already with all 3 characters and i will discuss a strategy for each one below. But in case you need to know the easiest character for this is the Mercenary followed by the sorcerer and the marksman is the one that gave me most trouble. This will work with all 3. But how much you will need to grind will depend on which character you pick.
One more thing regardless of class i could not get this going unless i was over level 32+ whenever i tried before that i could not get enough DPS to get past wave 7 or would get killed all time.
Map: The first map is the one i use, since there are only 4 types of creatures you have to deal with. A horde, a normal, a flyer and an armored type.
Trap Setup.
The list of traps you will need.
Essence Trap (essence drop and as much passive skills)
This trap will help you get more essence fast.
Cannon Sentry (all 3 upgrades + as much passive skills on damage as you can) The heavy hitter it also causes knock back on small and normal enemies.
Monster Cage (all 3 upgrades) These are only there to help you hold back monsters from going to the gate.
Frost Pillar (slow and vulnerability upgrades) Slows down enemies, especially the armored ones very effectively.
Portal Glyph(teleport chance and teleport shock also as much passive on the teleport chance) or abyss crater(disintegration blast upgrade and as much on passive skills to kill chance) Either one of these 2 will save you on the long run. Ive had good results with either one. But the higher the level the better the portal glyph becomes. Also the portal glyph for some reason can continuously teleport a creature more than once. Combined with teleport shock it might end up killing the creature after 3 or 4 teleports. It also buy a lot of time and helps you to not get swarmed.
Mi initial setup is the Essence trap with essence drop maxed out. the sentry cannon in the middle and the monster cage with whatever i could upgrade on it (starting with more wolves).
The first wave i would max out the monster cage and then go and build cannons on all slots until i had ever mechanical tower slot with a cannon (whenever i got extra essence i would upgrade for knockback) i would continue upgrading cannons until around wave 10. Then i would build the portal glyphs and place the 2 upgrade mentioned asap. I would keep going upgrading what i had and eventually around wave 20 would start building frost pillars. Which are only there to freeze the enemies and buy you time.
Skills and Classes.
Mercenary.
As a Must you need Chain Snare with both of its passive abilities maxed out
Frost ring is the second must have ability.
Maxed out strike, and other skills that increase rage, health and resistance are important. I also used bash against armored enemies.
You basically stand on the essence trap in the middle and hit everything that passes, if an enemy breaks thru pull it with chain snare. Consistently use frost ring to help with crowds of enemies.
Sorceress.
Mostly maxed out Ice bolt, disintegration ray and spool of fire is what i used, i had other skills but they did not help much, the chaos armor and arcane retaliation helped a lot. Also skills that increase mana. On later levels skills that add vulnerability are also valued.
Marksman.
Mostly battle skills, scattershot, grappler bolt and shock bolt (with focused charge maxed out).
Main issue with this character is unlike the other 2 he will only recharge focus while cloaked or if you hit with focused charge. Which is not efficient. Especially in later waves where enemies have too much HP.

Thanks. I played as a Mercenary on Tier 2 level 1. Followed your guide. The portals turned the tide for me. Once I added them, the slower tough guys kept teleporting. I went to wave 46. I was level 33 at the start and level 74 when finished. I have 101 skill points to spend now. :-). Hopefully 1 long run finishes it.

Is this broken ? I reached level 100 yesterday but achievement did not pop. Jumper seems to be broken too, there is no progress bar to see.

Don't worry about this achievement. It's not time consuming at all compared to other multiplayer games. There no need to grind.
If you intend to get 100% completion then you'll naturally unlock this while playing endless to reach waves 20 and 30, which by the way isn't something hard to do (if it's being too difficult then I suggest you should wait a little longer until your char is stronger before attempting it) if you got the right set up(higher level + good equipment). More on that on the respective solutions.
So, again, you'll level up multiple times while playing endless or even scenario modes, much more than you do in the campaign.
But, if you are the type that can't wait and do care about speed things up, then try to find a friend or random person who has a char that is already on a higher level than you or even level 100 and play endless or scenario modes with that person. Try reaching wave 20, for example. For you, the fight is gonna be harder than for the other person, obviously. There will come a time where you might wonder if you're even making a difference against the enemies. But whenever you guys decide to quit that single game (after reaching wave 20 or even later on) you will end up leveling up many times.
I recommend playing with the warrior class (aka mercenary) since even at his earlier levels he can become quite resistant to damage, hard to kill, and is a powerful character (damage between 10 and 50k in a single swing). (EDIT:) However, I found out later that the Sorceress is weak at the first levels but has many crowd control spells later on when high.

The best way to level up in the game is to play Endless mode. Considering the achievement for getting to Wave 20 on every level, this will simply come along the way. As I suggested in the Road Map, I would consider doing Campaign up to Tier 4, then focus on Scenario mode, then tackle Endless. You'll probably gain 4-10 levels each map in Endless depending on what level you were when you started.
