Before you can purchase anything from the Customisation menu you will need coins, which can be found scattered around the courses and are rewarded for completing holes.
I believe the cheapest item to buy is the 'Target Design' Ball for 200 coins but will be of no help to you in making the game easier so save your coins for better clubs (The Battle versions)

After you have completed the first few holes in the game collecting coins, you can purchase some new items to improve your golfer. On the select golfer screen, hover over your golfer and press 
. From here, you can purchase a wide range of items ranging from clubs to hats. In order to make the later holes in the game easier I would recommend buying the all round clubs which have a 7/10 rating for Power, Control and Accuracy. Purchasing any new club will unlock this trophy.
