How to unlock the Samurai achievement in X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Definitive Guide

For this achievement, you pretty much are going to want to make sure you max out the Samurai mutegen as soon as possible. As soon as you pick it up, equip it and never take it off until you get this achievement. That mutegen provides a multiplier to the experience earned on the reflexes. Try to grab all locations of it as soon as possible.

Samurai Locations:
1) Chapter 1.5: The Escape - During the segment where you are chasing down the scientist, you'll take an elevator down then shortly after catching a glimpse of him running away with a door shutting behind him. Here you will have to fight many machine gunners. After they are dead, you'll then have to pry open the door. If you use your feral senses, you'll see that the scientist ran through more doors on the right. The mutegen is in a room on the left.
2) Chapter 3.3: Betrayal - The last segment ends with a long elevator ride and another flashback segment happens. Immediately as this segment begins, you'll find a rope you'll have to cut to drop a pillar through the floor off to the right. Don't do that yet. Above that in the corner is a platform you can double jump to. On this platform is the mutegen.
3) Chapter 3.9: Aim for the Head - Eventually you'll find yourself entering a control room above the giant sentinel conveyor. In front of you will be a control panel allowing you to control 2 teleporter pads at the same time. The mutegen will be off to the left in this room.

At this point, just worry about finishing the game. WARNING: Do NOT start a new game after beating the final boss. This will reset your progress. Your best bet is to now grind certain checkpoints of the game for specific enemy types. Quick note here, before dropping back to the main menu after completing a segment, make sure you hit a checkpoint first or the progress may not count.

Machete: Chapter 5.1: The Beginning of the End - Trying to max out these guys is a pain. They are extremely plentiful throughout the game, but usually give pathetic experience and, as a result, pathetic progress towards the reflex. At least by chapter 5 the specialty versions of the machete (the spawning master and the flame champion) are worth quite a bit. Make sure to go for the spawners first though because the normal machete guys they spawn are still worth crap.

Machine Gunner: Any Chapter - Really, just worry about maxing out the other reflexes. This one should come while trying to max those out. There are more machine gunners than any other enemy in the game and you run into them almost constantly.

Jungle Mutants: Chapter 5.1: The Beginning of the End - Conveniently, this is the same section as the Machetes allowing you to work on both at the same time. This group basically refers to any enemy during the flashback segments who isn't a machete user or a machine gunner.

Robots: Chapter 3.2: Project Wideawake - First thing to remember is robotic enemies only appear during Chapter 3. The second thing to remember is the highest concentration of the easiest to kill robotic enemies, as well as probably the shortest section in the labs area, is checkpoint 2. As soon as the elevator part starts, drop to the main menu as a checkpoint occurs there.

Specialized Military Units: Chapter 4.3: Please Excuse Our Dust - This group refers to any military unit who isn't a gunner. That means this group contains most of the different types of enemies in the game. This makes this group also fairly easy to complete. You should be nearing the end of this group by the end of the game, but you will likely need just a bit more of a boost. Chapter 4.3 is very good because there is a relatively high density of these enemy types, they are worth a decent amount of experience at this point, and the ledges everywhere make it easy to kill them quickly by throwing them off.

the best way to have the Machete is in chapter one to fight with Machete Champion.

Great solution. I don't have the achievement yet but I'm progressing a lot faster than before in the checkpoints that you suggest.

Good guide. I recommend Chapter 3.7: Headache for robots as there's a Sentinel Prototype at the start that you can take down in one go for big points if you use Berserk before you deflect his missiles. Then there's a few more bots and a checkpoint down the lift to save your progress.

Rinse and repeat.

What do the Assassins you encounter in Chapter 4 count toward? When I look at the Reflexes menu they aren't listed. Do they count toward Machete wielders or specialized military units?

Great solution. It helped me get my final 3 reflexes maxed.

@Sibelius, doing that will take longer. It's good if you need kills, but you get only a fraction of xp, just kill the spawners and get a checkpoint

this is brutal. The machete guys take quite a while compared to everything else. Thanks for all the quick spots.

I agree with Tiyana, Level 1.1 for Machete is much easier and faster to upgrade Machete than 5.1 which is a real pain.
I got it in no time!
For the rest this guide is great, thanx.

Thanks to Tiyana & Raidenhardcore, I would have been stuck grinding the machete on 5.1 forever if you hadn't suggested 1.1 - I found I was getting about 4-5 times more experience from that level. Now to finish robots and then Hard mode for the completion...

The samurai 2 mutagen is at the start of 3.3 not the end (based on loading up the 3.3 checkpoint from the main menu). I got all the way to the sentinel hand looking for what is described above before watching a video and realising the mutagen is literally at the start of the 3.3 checkpoint

I can't get the samurai mutagen. I played throught the game and found Level 1 & 2. When I try and replay the chapter where Level 3 is, it does not appear. I checked other mutagens I was missing and they too do not appear in chapter replays. Anyone eles have this issue? Any solutions/suggestions?

I did Jungle Mutants on Chapter 3.8 Finding Agent Zero. There's 8 in about 5 minutes of gameplay. 2 Hunters at the start, then 2 Shifters at the bottom of the tower in the waterfall room before you climb your first vines, the top of the tower has 4 Shifters. Theres a few Machete Spawners about too. My Mutant went from 2-3 and Machete went up about 35% (2-3).

For Robots I did 3.5 Bolivar Trask, same exp as Headache (if you quit after 1st check) and just as quick (30secs checkpoint to checkpoint) but twice as easy (2 Predators and 3 Normal). Try it, with Rage it's over in a flash with great exp.

Military i killed WENDIGOs (where you get the achieve for killing 4) and Gunner came naturally. Finally finished up Machete on 5.1 up until the checkpoint right before the first Leviathon

There are 5 main Combat Reflexes in the game, relating to the 5 main types of enemies that you face. Every time you kill an enemy you will earn a small amount of Combat Reflex XP. Ultimately you are going to need to max out all 5 XP bars. Unfortunately, you will only have about 50% of the necessary XP after your first playthrough. As stats DO NOT carry forward, you will need to grind out the additional XP BEFORE starting your hard playthrough.

Make sure that you have found all 3 Samurai Mutagens, and equip that to gain maximal Combat Reflex XP. You also want to make sure you have Level 3 Experienced equipped, as you will want to be working towards Fully Loaded at the same time.

1. Machete

  • basic machete wielding enemies, these are found only in the Jungle Levels
  • best location to farm these is either Chapter 1, Level 1 (Unstoppable - play to the bridge checkpoint then restart) or Chapter 5, Level 1 (The Beginning of the End)
  • 1-1 probably gives more Machete Combat Reflex in a shorter time, but gives less overall XP towards Fully Loaded
  • I would recommend 5-1 at least until you have Jungle Mutants maxed out

2. Machine Gunner

  • the most common enemy type, probably won't need too much grinding
  • I would suggest focusing on the other enemy types, as most levels have some Gunners so you will get these guys maxed as you work on the others

3. Jungle Mutants

  • these include Leviathans, Hunters and Shifter
  • the best location to farm this is Chapter 5, Level 1 (The Beginning of the End), as this also gives decent progress towards the Machete Combat Reflex, and awards a good amount of XP for Fully Loaded

4. Robots

  • Enforcer Droids, Predator Units and the Mark I Prototypes
  • best location is Chapter 3, Level 2 (Project Wideawake)
  • this location has 3 Predators, and at least 20 Droids
  • play until the elevator checkpoint, then quit and reload

5. Specialized Military Units

  • W.E.N.D.I.G.0 Prototypes, Elite Commandos, Goliaths, Ghosts and Grenadiers
  • the best location to farm this is Chapter 2, Level 5 (What I Do Isn't Very Nice)
  • this section gives you a decent number of SMU's, including 6 W.E.N.D.I.G.0 Prototypes as well as some Gunners
  • there are 2 Grenadiers in this section, which will help towards Boomerang, and this is the section where you can retry Ultimate Wolverine if you didn't get it during the initial story play

Progress towards the Combat Reflexes can be tracked under the Character/Reflexes Tab from the Pause Menu.

Optional - you can use the Double Reflex Gain Cheat ( ), which will reduce the grinding. If you intend to use the Cheat, I would direct you to review the work around carefully, as detailed in the Roadmap section of this guide.

If you do intend to use Cheats, I would recommend activating them right after a checkpoint so you don't accidentally trigger a save with the Cheat registered, and back up your save prior to attempting them, just in case something goes wrong. If you do trigger an auto-save point with the cheat enabled before quitting to the main menu, you will permanently lock that save from trophy progress.

During the game you will kill different types of enemies and thus the Reflex gauge will be filled.

So, if you haven’t filled it out completely, then run these levels and, if necessary, replay:

  • Machete (any enemy with a machete): Level 1.1 or Level 5.1
  • Machine Gunner (any enemy with a gun): Level 4.3
  • Jungle Mutants (Hunters, Shifters, Leviathans): Level 5.1
  • Robots (Enforcer Droid, Predator Unit, Mark 1 Prototype): Level 3.2
  • Specialized Military Units (Elite Commandos, Goliaths, WENDIG0 Prototypes, Ghosts, Grenadiers): Level 4.3
