How to unlock the Born in the Darkness achievement in XCOM 2 - Definitive Guide

You can unlock this easily on the Lost and Abandoned mission where you first receive Elena Dragunova as a playable character. As you know, she starts in Shadow mode, has a chance to remain in it after shooting, and has 1 recharge of the Shadow ability, so you could try your luck with the RNG and hope you get 4 Shadow gunshot kills with her in one mission, OR, you could speed things up a little with the Claymore. Wait until you get a tight grouping of zombies husks Lost, have Elena toss the Claymore into them while in Shadow, and then have her or a squadmade shoot it. Any kills that occur will count towards the achievement.

If you miss out on that mission, then the point remains that the Claymore is your best friend in getting this achievement.

If you screw up and fail to get it on that mission it's fairly easy to pick up once you've got Elena to Lieutenant - Silent Killer means there's no chance of breaking Shadow with gunfire (as long as there's no additional enemy in sight when you fire). Picking up Blood Trail (Corporal rank) and Needle (Lieutenant rank*) also seemed to help a lot.

*It's possible to get both skills if you have enough AP available.

I figure the Claymore method is patched, several times now I've got 4 kills including the Claymore while in Shadow but it hasn't unlocked. Tried both the final kills with Claymore, as well as getting a few kills early and finishing off my 4 in Shadow but neither unlock.

Multiple methods to get this, but by far the easiest way to make sure its tracked is to get your Reaper the skill "Silent Killer" in the Stealth tree. This skill will turn your % chance to be revealed from shadow mode to 0% so long as you get the kill. So simply scout out pods, weaken them with your other soldiers and then finish them off with the reaper.

MISSABLE

Shadow mode is basically regular concealment but the Reaper can also activate this with a cooldown. While in concealment, you need to get 4 kills on a single mission but it doesn't have to be in a row. Before every shot you make there's a 50-80% chance you'll be revealed so make a save before you take a shot and save after a successful concealed kill.
