How to unlock the Breathing Room achievement in XCOM 2 - Definitive Guide

Despite the low ratio; I actually had to try and get these circumstances to occur as if you're a passive player they might never be near your squad. You'll want to try the below fairly on in a playthrough and not on an ironman playthrough.

When you see Vipers on a mission, its worth saving and then rushing a soldier right next to the Viper or at least somewhere in cover nearby and then instead of the usual overwatch trap just make sure your whole team is ready to take it out the next turn. The biggest issue I had was when a Viper on the map it would usually die whilst going for the strangle.

Any questions feel free to message me.

P.S. The low health vipers in the DLC don't strangle so any DLC missions may not actually be a good place to try this.

Also from Jimbo LaFleur: One small thing in case you have the Shen-DLC: Doing it with a SPARK-unit does not trigger the achievement.

Oh wow, I'll edit that in. That seems like an oversight by the devs.

Looks like they fixed that oversight. I just got the achievement with a spark unit killing the viper.

As of 9/17/2017, if you've got the War of the Chosen expansion, you can get this by killing a Viper that's strangling a Lost.

It may be a difficult situation to set up, but keep an eye out for this happening during normal play for an easy unlock. You can always load the autosave if you have to overextend yourself to get it!

The Viper is a snakelike unit that appears in April on Commander difficulty. One of its most common attacks is Tongue Pull, where it will grab one of your units and bind him on her in place. When bound, your unit will be unable to move and will take damage at the beginning of each turn. The unit can be freed by doing damage to the Viper. In order to obtain this trophy, however, you will need to do enough damage to the Viper to kill it while it is binding one of your units. Either weaken the Viper before it does Tongue Pull, or wait for it to use Tongue Pull a second time if you don't kill it in one shot. The Viper has 8 health (10 on Legend) and no armor.
