How to unlock the Mechlord achievement in XCOM 2 - Definitive Guide

This solution is only valid for owners of the "Shen's Last Gift" DLC pack. It's not necessarily the easiest way to get this done, but it's certainly the earliest it could be completed in your campaign.

During the "Lost Tower" mission, Lily Shen will be part of your ground team and if you attempt it as soon as it's available in your campaign she will be significantly better than any other support trooper you have available. Once you progress to the third segment of the mission, the AI Julien will now be housed in the body of a Sectopod (a serious threat you generally don't encounter until at least month four or five). Use Lily's Haywire ability to stun the Sectopod and you should have a success rate of 70-80%.

While on this mission it is also possible to get the following achievements the same relative ease:
XCOM 2CyberlordThe Cyberlord achievement in XCOM 2 worth 14 pointsEarn a second tier hack reward

XCOM 2Stop Hitting YourselfThe Stop Hitting Yourself achievement in XCOM 2 worth 38 pointsKill an enemy with a hacked turret

I assumed you had to take control of the Sectopod and was trying to do so, but you only need to stun it (as you say here in the guide). That makes it much easier!

You need a specialist with Haywire protocol and a decent hack stat or a lot of luck to get this. Sectopods have a very high hack stat but you can boost your soldier to increase their chances. Try to equip your specialist with the highest level gremlin, the best PCS for hacking you can get, and a skulljack all of which will boost the hacking stat. For your other soldiers try to equip them with EMP grenades/bluescreen protocol ammo, hit the sectopod without destroying it, each successful hit will lower its hack stat. Once you think the sectopod's hack stat has been lowered a good amount use haywire protocol and try to take it over. You can go through with the use of the ability as far as seeing your chances so long as you don't hit begin hack. So you can check and if the odds don't seem favorable you can cancel and try to weaken it some more.

This can only be done by a Specialist with the Haywire Protocol ability. With this ability, you can either stun mechanized enemies (such as MECs or Sectopods) or "hack" them, which means taking control of the enemy for a few turns. When you use Haywire Protocol, you are given the success rate of both of these options. It is always easier to stun an enemy than to hack them and a failed attempt at either will boost the enemy's stats, thus you will need to decide for yourself whether it is worth the risk.

For this trophy, you must successfully hack a Sectopod. These creatures appear in the late game (see Meat Over Metal) and the odds of hacking them are low. You can increase the odds by increasing the Hack attribute of the Specialist (generally done by levelling up, equipping a Skulljack or higher tier GREMLIN or gaining it as a reward for a successful hack) or you can save scum until the hack is successful.

It is enough to simply turn off the sectopod for a few turns; it is not necessary to capture it. This is done with the help of a specialist with hacking skills.

No, not enough. You just need to take control. I tried several times and they don’t give me a trophy for just hacking and stunning.
