Killing an enemy with your melee attack (
)doubles their point value, so I recommend setting difficulty to Easy, using debug/cheats menu, and starting from stage 1.
Cheats menu: from main menu, highlight 'Options' then hold

. Select infinite health, infinite continues, infinite ammo and infinite dog tags. You may also want infinite grenades to spam bosses and generally speed the process up.
As you play through, get used to the delay between melee strikes, and note that you need to be facing towards your foe. Just getting a few melee kills per room, I popped this early in to stage 5 -- if you upgrade speed ASAP and focus on meleeing the more valuable enemies (such as the flying humanoid ones) you can get it sooner.
