How to unlock the Big Tuna achievement in Yakuza 3 Remastered - Definitive Guide

This achievement will require you to go fishing out front of Morning Glory but first go to the public market in Okinawa and buy 10+ shrimp bait just in case you don’t get lucky. Then go back to the fishing rod on the beach in Morning Glory. Keep entering/exiting the mini-game until fish spawn in the 140-150m range (Tuna will only spawn at that range). Cast your lure with shrimp bait ensuring it lands on the fish in that area. Don't touch the line and wait until A appears (it may take a few tries). It appears for less than half a second so be focused on that prompt.
Once you've hooked the fish, it'll take 2-3 minutes to reel it in. Ensure the line doesn't go above 75% tension and point your rod in the direction the fish is moving (left or right). Just be patient and don't rush it while keeping an eye on the tension meter.
Also, note the tuna you catch can be used for the sea bream sub-story so I'd recommend hanging onto it until then if you already haven't just paid the 300k for it.
Here’s a video of when I got this achievement:

One thing I want to add is don’t pay attention to A prompt, hit A when you see splash in water from bite. Makes timing easier.

Ugh... I finally lasted awhile but this is such a crap minigame that's impossible for me to do because of a disability I was born with. I don't have the coordination/dexterity quickly move the left stick and hold LB at the same time.

You shouldn’t need LB, I did it was just left stick and RB

You can also get it at around 130m, and if you overshoot it you can still reel in the line a bit to get a bite.

Can't seem to juggle the tension with the constant turning left and right. Getting frustrated with this one...

This is ridiculously hard. I can’t even hook the tuna after I cast the line. Every single time no matter when I press A, it misses. I’ve tried waiting for the prompt and just pressing A when I see the splash. Neither option is working for me.

Forget this achievement, catching this thing is near impossible even if I can hook it, which 9 times out of 10 i cant even get a bite

My advice is never to hold down RB, tap the button instead - it makes a massive difference. It doesn't have to be rapid, just a fairly regular rhythm will do the job. What this will do is allow the tension to slowly go down without having to use LB which will lose you progress. Once tension is in the green area you can hold for a while to build the tension up a little, then go back to tapping. Keeping your rod pointed in the same direction as the fish is still hugely important. You can still use LB if things get dicey, but once you get into it you should pretty much never need to.

I tried this countless time on the Series X and was never able to hook the tuna. As soon as I switched the One X I got 2 hooks in a row. Also listen for the audio prompt rather than rely on the visual one.

Ashley6200's advice is by far the best while there is no way to help with the button prompt tapping only rb is by far the best method after switching to that method i did it second try with my first getting to 20m where the tuna goes berserk

For the button prompt:

Shortly before the popup your line will get pulled, use it to signal when to press A. Also, you can mash A, as there is no penalty for not doing so.

I got my early on chapter 3. Just throw the bait as far as possible and pay attention on the water, it will appears a few milliseconds before the "press A".
And for fishing, you can hold the button at will, but only if the pole is in the same direction the fish is swimming. ALWAYS place the rod in the same direction where the fish swims.

What a stressful 5 minutes. I didn't have a problem with the prompt when I realized a second before the prompt there are bubbles coming up from where I cast the line and that's when you need to hit it

The QTE sequences in this game were programmed by sadists, but especially, especially this one.

Finally got it. Holy cow man that was tough. My contacts were drying out from not blinking had to switch to glasses lol. I read you can spam A to hook, which I think is true. Seemed to work. Staring at the fish splashes left and right trying to watch the line color in peripheral vision had my head sweating! So glad I got it! I used worms from the orphanage yard.

I read online that you could consistently catch a tuna from 120 - 150m out. I decided to try it and was able to catch a tuna starting at 125m or so. It is worth going with a lower number if possible to make it so you will spend less time reeling the fish in.

I found this really hard and started watching YouTube videos. I found this comment from Danidran which helped me greatly:

Ok so I went from finding this impossible to catching two tunas in a row, here are my tips:

- The bait doesn't matter, you can do it with worms.
- As it should be obvious, always follow the fish's pattern.
- You must reel with R1 just until the meter turns red, don't keep pulling until it makes noise.
- To lose tension, just follow the pattern without pressing any button. Start pushing R1 again when it's green.
- The only moment you must use L1 is to let the fish go a bit when the tension starts making noise.

And that's it, it got really easy doing this.

Yeah, the problem is more along the lines of getting my hands to cooperate with each other.

I have been trying now all afternoon, and I have officially given up. Closest I got was 120 meters. I have tried different methods, but sometimes the tuna just flip flops from left to right without any time for adjustment. I have not been as frustrated with trying to get a so seemingly simple achievement for a long ass time.

Just got this after very nearly giving up and just deciding to pay the 300,000 in substory #43 (Sea Bream Strongarm). But after 20-30 minutes of frustrating attempts, I ended up getting this and it was actually not too hard once I fully understood the fishing mechanics.
johnnyjohnathan has good advice above, but I'd like to add a few of my own tips:

- Catch a couple easier fish first so you can get a hang of the mechanics. I caught 2 easy fish then after a couple dozen pieces of bait and 4 or 5 hooked tunas later, I caught one.
- Watch for the splash in the water after casting your line. This happens immediately before the PRESS A dialog pops up, so I found it easier to press A when I see the water move rather than looking for text to pop up.
- I was a bit confused at first when people say to "follow the fish" with the rod. I'll try to clarify: As SOON as the fish stops moving left and starts moving right, hold left stick all the way right. As SOON as the fish stops moving right and starts moving left, hold left stick all the way left. You're basically leading the fish with your line. Always keep doing this the entire time.
- One of the most important tips that helped me the most: I never took my eyes off of the fish's swimming direction because it can turn very quickly, and you may miss it if you're watching the tension meter. I could mostly only see the color of the meter in my peripheral vision the whole time, but that's really all I needed.
- Sometimes the fish will keep switching directions fast. During this period, I pretty much don't reel in at all. The tension meter seemed to max out more easily while the fish was quickly switching back and forth.

I think that's it. I'll echo the others be patient. Don't try to "hurry up and catch it" because you'll break the line. The reeling in process will take several minutes.

Hope this helps!

The tuna only appears at 140-150m on the fishing bar.

First go to public market in Okinawa and buy 10+ shrimp bait. Then go back to the fishing rod on the beach in Morning Glory. Keep entering/exiting the mini game until fish spawn in the 140-150m range. Cast your lure with shrimp ensuring it lands on the fish in that area. Don't touch the line and wait until cn_X appears (it may take a few tries). It appears for less than half a second so keep focused on it.

Once you've hooked the fish, it'll take 2-3 minutes to reel it in. Ensure the line doesn't go above 75% tension and point your rod in the direction the fish is moving (left or right). Just be patient and don't rush it while keeping an eye on your tension.

Also note the tuna you catch can be used for one of the sub-stories so I'd recommend hanging onto it until then.

So, to get this achievement, you first need to purchase several units of shrimp bait, available inside the Public Market on the southwest corner of the first floor map. Shrimp is the only bait that attracts tuna. Second, before going to the fishing rod at the beach to start your minigame, save your game at the save point inside the Morning Glory house, just in case you fail in your attempts and end up running out of shrimp bait with nothing to show for. Then when you load up the fishing minigame, focus only on the last third of the distance gauge (between 100 and 150m) bar when finding fish icons, as that's where tuna are located. If no icons show in this area, just back out to the main game screen and load the minigame up again, as the layout refreshes every time. Once you get a fish icon in that 100-150M range, cast your shrimp bait and time your input to where the red bar lands on the fish, with an emphasis to the head. Then, just wait until the cn_A button input pops up as the tuna catches. You only have a half-second before the tuna breaks free, so timing is of the essence.

When you make your catch, just pull the rod with your left thumbstick to follow the direction the fish is going, by doing this, you reduce the tension on your reel. Press the cn_RB button only while your rod is in sync with the direction of the fish and while the tension bar is in a blue or green state, letting go when that bar is halfway filled (yellow) or has gone red. This can take anywhere from two to four minutes depending on your proficiency with the fishing minigame (I had caught only one other fish prior to my tuna catch). It all comes down to patience throughout the ordeal.

What you want to do with the tuna is up to you, but since the tuna is the item in question that's necessary to complete the Sea Bream Strongarm substory, then it's more likely than not to serve as priority.

Elementary trophy. This fish is most often found at the end of the line, although its spawn range is from 100 meters to the end. The only thing I can advise is to let go when the fish decides to turn around. And also don't be too greedy. I caught it literally the second time, I don’t know why so many people have problems with it.

Great for catching burgers from Smile Burger. You can put this trophy aside until you complete one of the substory (where you will have to catch tuna to complete the quest).
