How to unlock the Insane Survivor achievement in Yorbie: Episode One - Definitive Guide

This is by far the hardest trophy in the game. The primary reason being the last level, during which you will have to suffer through oddly inverted controls while the game throws some of the hardest sections in the entire game at you.

Reboots in this game can be frustratingly difficult to understand, but really they're simple, if not terribly conceptualized. Let's say you start the game for the first time and enter the first level. Right now you have 3 lives; if you die 3 times you will get a black screen and game over, causing you to "reboot". Now, let's say you enter a level with 3 lives, die once, then quit the game. You can turn the game off, you can even delete the game and come back a year later, you will still have only 2 lives left before a game over. Basically, any time you start a level, you want to make sure you have 3 lives total. If you have any less, go ahead and get yourself killed until you run out of lives, get the black screen, and reboot. At this point go ahead and quit the level, and re-enter.

Since the final level is by far the most complicated, I will outline my suggestions for beating it below. At the time of writing this, nobody has earned this trophy, so this information is my best theory of how best to go about earning it. This will take many hours of practice to perfect.

The final level has basically 4 stages, each of which I will explain separately. Note that as the phases go on, your controls will become more and more complicated. I will give my suggestion on how to hold your controller as you progress. Read on and follow the instructions carefully, and give yourself some practice with each stage of the last level.

Stage 1:

The beginning of the level. This is the easiest part by far and should cause you no issues. This is where they introduce the fact that you are going to have to deal with odd controls. For this part of the level you have lost the ability to jump, and the shoot button has been moved from to /. Run back and forth across the screen and take the enemies out as quickly as you can, prioritizing safety. If you die here you will want to lose the rest of your lives causing a game over, then quit and try again.

Stage 2:

After the screen goes all weird for the second time, you will be in a large and seemingly empty room. This will give you some time to get used to your newly defunct controls. During this stage has become and vice versa. Left is right and right is left. The shoot button also remains switched. The first phase of this stage of the level has you moving back & forth and up & down, turning on consoles with . The catch is that there are spinning blades going back and forth through the center room which you must pass through many times. In order to make the controls a bit easier to handle, I suggest taking the controller, and turning it to face away from you in your hand. Hold the controller so that your right hand middle/index finger are on the left analogue stick. This will make it so that you control Yorbie with your right hand, which will be weird to most people, but will have the controller in such a way that "left" becomes left again, and "right" will be right. Take a few moments before starting this section of the level to get used to it and you will see why I suggest this.

After you've completed the up/down, back and forth and turned on the final console, the top of the level will open up revealing some enemies. I suggest taking the time here and orienting yourself so you can kill the enemies from afar. The spinning blades are still spinning about, ready to one-hit you dead, so best to be safe as possible. This section can easily drain all of your lives in a matter of seconds if you're not extremely careful, and having the controller backwards will take a lot of practice to get this right. Clean up as much as you can, and when you think you are ready to move on, equip your EMP gun to stun any leftovers. Quickly switch to your Mincer JR when you've stunned the remaining enemies and take them out, prioritizing the turret in the center. Once the regular enemies and the center turret are destroyed you will be able to progress, and you can ignore the other two turrets.

Stage 3:

This section is arguably the hardest. You will be beset by a total of six turrets, three to either side, and three waves of powerful enemies will spawn in the middle of the room. Before I get into details on how to handle those, the controls... Everything is inverted in this stage. Your right analogue now controls Yorbie instead of the left, "up" is down, "down" is up, "left" is right, and "right" is left; this is where it gets interesting. Take your controller in your hands like normal, with the buttons facing you. Next, turn the controller 180 degrees, so that it is upside down; this is your new controller layout. You can now use your left thumb to control the "left" stick (technically the right stick), your right thumb to aim with the "right" stick, and your right hand little finger will be for shooting. Godspeed to you in this crazy layout, it's like to be your best chance at survival.

Once you're ready with the new controller positioning, prioritize the turrets on the left. Take out your Mincer JR and destroy them as quickly as possible, then position yourself to the left, out of the reach of the turrets on the right. There's very little safe space, but it is there. With the turrets gone pull out your EMP gun and stun the enemies as they get within range, then quickly swap to another damage dealing weapon and destroy the robots (I suggest a single blast from the Plasma gun, followed by more Mincer JR). Continue this pattern for the next two waves until they are all dead, and then finish off the turrets. If you've come this far then well done, you're in the final stretch.

Stage 4:

Sweet sweet regular controls... kind of. The final stage of the level is the boss, and he's a long and tedious affair. The boss has armor which replenishes every time he leaves the screen, which he will do many times before you beat him. During the fight, when he does leave the screen, your controls will once again be confused. You will be back to Stage 3 controls, and this happens so suddenly that it can very easily cause multiple deaths if you're anywhere near the edge of the relatively small platform you've been given to run around on. During those phases though you don't have to shoot at all, so I don't suggest repositioning the controller, but simply getting used to the weird controls; once again, this will take a lot of practice. The boss is simple enough, but extremely difficult; shoot the power cores behind him, then shoot him to first remove his shield (the yellow bar) followed by his health. He will go through the same two phases over and over until you beat him. Good luck out there, you're going to need it!
