How to unlock the Close to the Animals achievement in Zoo Tycoon - Definitive Guide

This one glitched on me (progress bar on achievements page suggested 1/3 despite performing every interaction multiple times).

The glitch happens if you do the tutorials first, so the only way to get the achievement is to jump straight into campaign mode and do the interactions before doing anything else.

Edit: Since the Xbox One update allowing us to manage our own storage this solution is mostly redundant, as you can now delete your save data and start up a brand new game.

Head straight into challenge mode, do the 3 interactions (feeding, washing and sensory) and the achievement will unlock smile.

For those who are coming to the game from the start and don't need to worry about the glitch but want to know how to do each of the interactions, these are the interactions and the animals you need to adopt to be able to perform them (thanks Bumfluff1202):

-Sensory enrichment - tigers, chimpanzees, or lions.
-Hose interaction - elephants, bears, hippos, or rhinos.
-Feeding interaction - elephants and giraffes.

In any game mode, click in an empty space of the zoo to build an exhibit, choosing one that is appropriate for the animal you intend to adopt. (You can click into a current exhibit to look at the 'adopt animals' menus to see which exhibits they like). Alternatively, if you open one of the challenge zoos, there will likely already be some exhibits and animals available for you to build the sensory toys in.

When the exhibit has been built, through the menus you will have options to build enrichments such as feeding stations, toys and sensory enrichments. Choose the sensory toy appropriate for the animal as detail above and build it in one of the available spaces. If it is a small exhibit that was already built in a challenge zoo, you may need to remove an existing toy or feeding/cleaning station to make space. Come out of the top down view if you haven't already (press Y on a path) and walk up to the exhibit where you will be able to feed, wash or play with your animal. Bear in mind, it sometimes takes a while for your animal to head over to you, so just be patient.

likewise. apparently i've not even started it. it's due to a bug in the tutorial. if you do the tutorials they get you to do all the actions. any done in tutorial mode do not unlock. i've asked them if/when they're going to patch it but not yet got a response.

Thanks for the update but hopefully they patch it because having a second xbox one is not something that I see in my future

Do you have any friends who live locally with an xbox one? Perhaps that's a way around it? Otherwise it's restoring your console to factory settings and redownloading everything or waiting for a patch :( just glad I managed to complete it!

Thank you! Now I just have to decide if I want to risk losing all my Killer Instinct data to try and get this. I'll probably wait to finish that up then give this a try. Research Everything is also glitched for so hopefully that will take care of both.

Check EVERYTHING before you assume your research everything is glitched Pyro. I thought mine was too until I checked Statues and went left to scroll on accident and saw 6 more statues lol. Also make sure you researched everything at the main gate (a lot there too).

Pyro make sure you've checked everything. I've not heard of Research Everything being glitched. I'm in the same boat with the Close To The Animals one. I bought it digitally too so can't do the factory reset. My only hope is a patch :(

My Research Everything was fine aswell, don't forget to research of the animal toys, decorations, advertising, and everything in the research tree at the home base.

@GamerAsh mine is a digital copy. You should still be able to do the factory reset thing. Solution updated.

Maybe a dumb question but, the second console case, doing the workaround will overwrite my cloud saves with the new local save which is basically empty, right? If I then go back to my home console, will all my progress be lost or can I re-upload my local content from that console back to the cloud before it gets overwritten locally?

Not a dumb question :) The system seems to be built to not overwrite any saves without checking with you first. When you load back up on your primary xbox you should get the message again that the saves are out of sync and get to choose which to keep. I personally didn't let the 2nd xbox finish the sync, so when I loaded my old one back up it asked me if I wanted to cancel the sync of the other xbox and keep the old saves.

Or just hold off for a patch or until external storage is enabled. wink

'Wait' isn't exactly a good solution though is it. Some people want to finish the game and trade it in while it still has value. Also the devs have never acknowledge the problem, so it is doubtful that a patch is on the cards (yet) and there is nothing to suggest that the introduction of external storage will change the way save data is managed - the extra storage is for music/game installs etc as far as I understood it.

Does doing this remove things I recieved from challenges (ex. DR3 Reaper Mask, etc.) and not give them back?

If you are talking about avatar rewards then I imagine they would be tied to your tag and safe. All my avatar awards from my 360 days are still available when I moved to Xbox One...

Nah I meant gifts given from completing challenges for xbox one games (some give in game stuff instead of just art like the barbary lions challenge).

But how to actually complete the interactions (since I should avoid the tutorial)

By BUILT TO HURT on 26 Dec 2013 14:08
Yea, basically what GamerAsh said. The factory reset deletes all local data (including save files), but your saves are all backed up to the cloud and will be automatically redownloaded as soon as you start up a game whilst connected to the internet.

If you play offline in the meantime and create a new local save, then connecting back to the internet will cause a message prompt asking which you want to keep.

Is the sync supposed to take 10+ minutes....

By ReptarOnIce3000 on 17 Jan 2014 05:46
Ohp. Nevermind just popped. Might be worth adding that if you have more data on the cloud save it may take a long time to sync...I had a level 40 zoo with like 30 hours on it, and 4 or 5 campaign zoo saves (this was my last achievement). It took approx, I shit you not, 30 minutes to finally sync up and give me the achievement. I don't know if that's normal, but if not you could add that for people like me haha.

Has anyone had problems after the factory reset and going back online with losing game progression, with any game? I don't want to lose any achievement progress. Thanks

You shouldn't lose game progression for any game other than Zoo Tycoon, since you'll be overwriting the cloud save with the local save. Other than that you should be good. Give me a few minutes here and I can confirm this. I'm working on re-installing my X1 games after last nights factory reset:P

Haha no, I've still had all my game progress in my games. Weither I did or not though, it didn't really bother me. I already have all my games completed to their full potential:P

Today's Xbox One update lets you manage your content and you can now delete your game save data for Zoo Tycoon. This achievement was glitched on me, I deleted the game save data and ran through the interactions and the achievement unlocked for me!

Hey DTI great guide, I'd like t add this part though for people who haven't done the tutorial yet as I spent forever trying to work out which animal I can use the sensory on

-Sensory enrichment - tigers, chimpanzees, or lions.
-Hose interaction - elephants, bears, hippos, or rhinos.
-Feeding interaction - elephants and giraffes.

I love how every guide I read says "do this before the tutorial" but then doesn't bother to explain what "this" is or how to do it. I presume I would learn all that in the tutorial, but...

Yeah I can confirm again what Foobnum said I just deleted the save data off of my console skipped tutorials, did all the interactions (Feed, Hose and Sensory) in a challenge zoo and as soon as I did the last one pop went the achievement smile

Apologies, this was an old solution explaining how to get around the original glitch when deleting a save and restarting was not an option. I have now updated the solution to include how to do the interaction for people who are new to the game, but I have done from memory as I haven't played in a while, so please let me know if any information is incorrect or not clear enough. Thanks!

The Feeding interaction can also be done with certain antilopes like the Topi.

I didn't get progress for this achievement until I got "kicked out" from each of the exercises from doing them enough and then pressing A to enter them again.

This dev team never replies to tweets and last time I looked on their website there wasn't even a zoo tycoon section.

Doing some research online it looks like Microsoft will introduce better save date management when they bring in support for external memory. So maybe deleting all data then starting a new save on the external memory will work, it will need to reset the achievement progress though, which is stored on MS servers. So a game patch seems like it would be a better option but is less likely.

Off topic, looking for someone to get the coop achievements with.

Just so I'm sure I understand, doing the factory reset would leave the other game saves alone but essentially wipe the Zoo Tycoon save, correct?

I can confirm this works with the digital version doing a factory reset.

@DrCanadianNinja, basically when you do a factory reset it deletes all the saves for every game until you load that game back up connected to the internet. That's why you get the achievement offline save the game then quit out. When you load back up with the internet it'll redownload your old saves but it will recognise your new one too and the cheevie will pop.

I just got the game and I looked at the XB360A guide before starting and this is what it said there

"Step 0a: Prevent the "Close to the Animals" Achievement from Glitching
Before doing anything in the game, from the Main Menu select Campaign. Ignore the pop-up about the tutorial. Select the Hard level in Canada called "Fame and Fortune, Kidding Around." One of the objectives will be to complete all three interactions; do so and the achievement should unlock."

It worked fine and this was the second achievement I unlocked, so if anyone haven't started yet it works fine.

Hi i just bagged this achievement today,

Having not known about this buggy achievement i plowed into the game and got quite far, having read workarounds involving deleting save data and even factory resetting the console, i didnt want to lose my progress, and i didnt heres how.....

I had already completed the tutorial and thus glitched the achievement, so what i did was-

when loading up zoo tycoon and pressing a to play the console syncs game save data from the cloud, so i cancelled the sync, now as there is no save data availablr the game starts from the beginning.

I went to any zoo on challenge mode (this is not essential) selected not to do the tutorial, built the three enrichment's with appropriate animals

-alpine with a bear and hose enrichment
-savannah with a giraffe and feeding enrichment
-tropical with a chimp and sensory interaction enrichment

i did the interaction's and 'pop' went the achievement.

now i quitted out of the game, reloaded and started as normal, when the console tries to sync to the cloud it will ask you which save you want to keep, the local save just created or the cloud data,

select cloud data and let it sync (if you select the console save file you will lose all data and progress previously gained.)

job done

Took me awhile to figure how to delete my save file on my console but once I did that then I followed your instructions. Had a little scare though it took a little longer than normal for the achievement to pop but it did.

Glad i could help, I worried a bit too as the data took a long time to sync after, but it did sync, I'm using the beta os and it comes.with a progress bar on sync now.

This achievement is glitched and requires you to start a new save file for the XBOX 360 version of the game if you don't do it prior to viewing the tutorial. It was also glitched for the XBOX ONE version, but that has been fixed since.

Since I beat the game on XBOX ONE version first and learned how to play it, I created this video on the 360 version to show you how exactly to get this done without looking at the game tutorials.

Hope this helps.

This achievement requires that you perform all three animal interactions at least once (feeding, hosing, and sensory). See "Play Time" for more information about interactions.

*GLITCHY* If you first complete the requirements for the achievement in the tutorial, it will become glitched. It is best to attempt to unlock this achievement ASAP following the Step 0a of the Roadmap. If it does glitch on you, there is a fix. When booting up the game, select a different save location to than the one you normally use (i.e. a USB drive or a cloud). Skip the tutorial and go right into Campaign mode and select the Hard level in Canada. Build and complete all three interactions here to unlock the achievement.
