This is cumulative across all zoos you create in campaign and challenge mode. It was the last achievement (minus the glitched one) that I unlocked. After breeding all the color variants and all the campaign zoos I had about 9 million.
I just loaded up a fame 40 zoo, made sure that it was profitable (I was getting between 150-200 zoo dollars every time it went up) and let it run while the final million came in - took about 1-1.5 hours.

It really is best to just go for this achievement while you working on your breeding achievements. Check in with your finances to see what money you're making compared to the money you're spending.
