How to unlock the Captain Sidekick achievement in A Plague Tale: Innocence - Definitive Guide

Stay with the captian.

In Chapter 14 (XIV - Blood Ties), you play as Hugo and about halfway through the chapter you have to follow Lord Nicholas to Beatrice's cell. If you fall behind and Lord Nicholas closes the door, you'll have to start all over again. Achievement/trophy pops if successful and once you hide under the table.

@FoolsAndKings Maybe you wasn't fast enough, if Lord Nicholas gets to the room first and closes the door, you'll have to start all over.

If you got stuck in the checkpoint right before the door, start sprinting towards the yard and he will spot and follow you, bait him again in the yard and go around him and past the door

Thanks SoulyDconte. The text walkthrough for this game was terrible for this section. It skipped over bits of this chapter and didn't mention you needed to get to that room before he does! You saved me having to play through the whole chapter again.

If you mess up and get stuck at the checkpoint where you spawn behind the Captain right before he walks through the door, quickly do a 180 and run back out into the courtyard and he'll follow to investigate.

I was able to loop him around the corner to the left when you run out of the door, making it back inside before him and getting through the door before him without restarting the entire chapter.

Thanks for the video. Better to understand than the achievement description. I "Stayed" with him the 1st time and nothing, why didn't it say beat him to the room. +1

I wish I’d looked at this instead of following the walkthrough. Now I have to replay the chapter because I thought I was still supposed to follow him after the bushes

Edit: I was able to use Cooper101183’s solution and still get the achievement without replaying the chapter. Crisis averted!

In Chapter 14 (XIV - Blood Ties), you play as Hugo and about halfway through the chapter you have to follow Lord Nicholas to Beatrice's cell.

After a small conversation, you will get to a courtyard. Here you have to beat Lord Nicholas to a certain room.

What I did was, I kept hugging the left side of the bushes in front of you first.
Cross the small opening (they will notice you, but it won't be enough for you to get caught).
After that take the diagonal turn, evading the guard in front of you.
Cross the small opening between the bushes over here as well.
Now go left under the arch. Here you can start running. Take a left turn, followed by a right turn (right after the torch on the wall), keep going straight through the door. Hide under the table to the right and the achievement should pop!

As noted in the comments, another useful solution from Sm4k when also pursuing the Botanist achievement:
I was able to collect the Nightshade in this area and still beat him into the room. Instead of going into the arch, continue on and wrap around the outside of the bushes to find a path leading to the Nightshade. Nicholas will have noticed you to the point of wanting to investigate where you were when he saw you, then he'll head back to where he was and resume his path. This buys you plenty of time to grab the flower, and head back to the arch where you can still sprint through the room and under the table.

Note: At one point, Nick noticed me once I got ahead of him and got a full red diamond from him. He didn't start chasing me, but kept walking normally. I continued into the doorway and sprinted into the room that he closes off. Once in there I still had the red diamond from Nick behind me and I got killed before I could squat under the specific table. All you gotta do is get in the room. Just curious about Nick's red diamond.

You can also go get the Nightshade first, the game then saves. If you get caught, no big deal. You'll start the garden over but still have credit for the flower and now you can just go and beat Nick to the end.

Also nice to know, as this happened to me: I beat Nicholas to the room, however I did not manage to duck underneath the table and was caught by a guard. This caused me to respawn in the hall with the achievement unlocking nontheless a few seconds later! :)

Hey guys, this was annoying so found another way if you're wanting to get the flower first. If you get caught intentionally after getting the flower, in the final main corridor you will respawn directly behind the guy you’re following. If you very shortly sprint, then crouch as he turns around you can get past him, then pop the achievement by crawling under the table beyond the door. Only took me a couplea goes

You can get the flower and get caught at it. I respawned at the beginning of the courtyard and was able to get the sidekick achievement.

I found WeAwokenTheHive's comment very helpful. I accidentally triggered the autosave at the point they describe and thought I would have to repeat the chapter again. However after several attempts (it was a faff) I was able to get past the captain as described.

Just another thing, if you manage to run past the captain and duck under the table, he will get frozen at the door. The only way I've found to continue on with the chapter is to get noticed by the other guard on the right, keep hiding under the table until he resumes his position and while he does so, quickly move on underneath the other table. Then you may go to the cells.

Thank you Lord Von Chimp! It took multiple tries, but I started sprinting just before the captain reached the door and was able to maneuver around him and through the door under the table to unlock the achievement. The captain got stuck like Soulbite said. I accidentally got caught by the other guard so it took me back to the checkpoint. I took the intended path through the left of the captain and all the way around after that which leads you back to the room.

Just incase you screw up a little and the Captain gets infront of you, there is a way to still get it without having to start the level from scratch.
What I did was to tap the sprint button whole moving diagonally behind him, so by the time he turns around, (he seems to turn to whatever side you started sprinting on) you'll be past him on the other side, and can slip in the door.

I did get a game over screen when I got in there as I didn't stop sprinting and the captain turned around again, but I was in the door and the achievement popped, so win win!

For those like me who blundered and hit a checkpoint in the corridor with the door do not give up hope. I was able to get it using this method. Watch my 1 minute clip as its difficult to explain but will save you from having to do a whole new playthrough.

You can also just wait until he's about 3-4 feet from the door and just run past him to the table without having to spend time doing this little cat and mouse game. Was pretty simple.

I’ve found a slight variation on coopers guide as I tried several times but couldn’t get passed Nicholas and into the room without being spotted. If you go up the stairs as Cooper did, but then run around in circles on the flat area, Nicholas may move further to the right and go back beyond the stairs toward the checkpoint spawn point. I tried this twice and it worked both times.

In Chapter 14 if you find you get to the checkpoint just before the door too late you can lure him back with the run buttom and then keep luring him around. You have to be quick, if he sees you for too long it will trigger a cut scene but the below video shows a good path.

Perhaps to give a bit more guidance during chapter 14 blood ties you will follow the captain into the gardens rather than follow him run all the way round the left hand side while he speaks to the other guards. You have to enter his room BEFORE he does otherwise you will need to restart the chapter.

During Chapter 14, Hugo will be the playable character. He will reach a point where he overhears a conversation and decides to follow a high-ranking captain in order to reach the prison and meet someone very important to him. The goal is to tail this captain all the while without being seen. While the first half is straightforward, the second half, which takes place in a courtyard, is trickier because Hugo will have to sneak ahead of the captain when the latter is in a conversation with a fellow soldier. Once Hugo enters the courtyard, turn left and use the bushes as cover to reach the exit on the opposite side. The exit leads to a corridor which offers two paths, to the front into the next room, and to a flight of stairs to the left. Head front into the next room, and hide under the cart. The achievement should unlock soon, long before the captain arrives. Reaching this corridor ahead of the captain is essential because, if not, the captain would close the door behind him, making Hugo no longer able to keep up with him.

Consult the following video if you have any trouble. All credit goes to its maker, Trophygamers.

Chapter 14. You need to overtake Kolya before he closes the door in front of you and you go around. You will have this opportunity after going out into the garden, where there is also a collection herbarium.
You need to cross the entire garden, get into the open door opposite the original start of the entrance.
As soon as we get to the other side, we need to go forward and hide under the table, a ding will immediately happen

There is a super simple way. If you don’t have time to follow Nikolai when he approaches the door, stupidly run at full speed with the at the door, he will notice you, but the game will have time to load and the trophy will appear. Even if Nikolai passed the first door, load from the last checkpoint and voila Nikolai is again in front of the door.
