How to unlock the Grandmaster achievement in Alice: Madness Returns - Definitive Guide

This is the Grandmaster Achievement Guide for Alice: Madness Returns! Enjoy!

Pretty simple, all you have to do is solve a chess board without failing. You run across them in chapter 4! You get 2 different boards on the first board you run into, so you get two tries. If you fail, reload your save and try again! Make sure to read how to play when you first start up a board, so you know where to move the pawns. The easiest boards to do is the first one you run across because they're the smallest boards in the chapter and you get two of them. The further you get in the chapter, the harder the boards, and you only get one try. Get both pawns to the goal at the same time in a set number of moves and the achievement is yours! Happy playing!

Here's a video solution for the second puzzle - you only need to clear one of them without failing for the achievement. Hope this helps.

This trophy involves correctly solving any of the Chess puzzles that show up when you enter Queensland. The first puzzle is the easiest and the solution is Left, Up, Up, Up. There should be turns left and when it transitions to the second puzzle, the trophy shall ding.

In Chapter 4 there are three chess puzzles to do during the chapter. During the chess puzzles you need to move your white pawn piece while a red pawn piece mimics your movements. Get the pieces to the diamonds to complete the puzzle. It is most easily unlocked during the first puzzle.

Solutions:

  • Puzzle 1, Part 1: Left x2, Up x3, Right
  • Puzzle 1, Part 2:: Up x3, Left
  • Puzzle 2: Up, Left, Right, Up x3, Left x2, Up, Right
  • Puzzle 3: Up, Left, Right, Up x2, Left, Right, Up x2, Left

In the later half of chapter 4, you will come across a lever (story related) that you will need to pull to get through a door. After doing so and going through the door you will need to play a game of chess. You will get the blackboard to learn what to do, in the spoiler tag will be the correct moves to make to get past it without failing. If you quit or restart the puzzle it will not void this trophy from popping.

Some things to know:

  • The computer will mimic your every move
  • You will need to get both pawns to their goal location at the same time
  • There will be Rooks (Castle with faces) that will block your moves
  • Knights ( Half a Horse with a sword) will destroy your Pawn if you get in their way, resulting in a fail.
  • Chess Puzzles need to be completed with set amount of moves.

First set of Chess Puzzles - 6 moves

  3. Forward
  4. Forward (The trophy should pop as soon as you are done.

You will meet this task in Chapter 4. There is absolutely nothing complicated. You don't need to know how to play chess. The task will be that you will need to place 2 pawns in a certain place. You control one, and the other will move in a mirror image. The number of moves is limited. You don't need to win the whole game - the first time the mini-game will consist of 2 stages. It is enough to complete the first part the first time. I got the achievement on my first try. If it doesn't work right away, reboot from the checkpoint.
