How to unlock the Hardened In The Heat Of Battle achievement in Aliens: Dark Descent - Definitive Guide
XP is not awarded for killing enemies (I guess the majority of people will know this by now).
XP is mainly awarded for completing primary and secondary objectives (and the occasional massive onslaught - but you really should always avoid combat and you should be playing stealthy).
- xp is also awarded if a marine dies and you pick up their dog tags (higher the lv the more the xp)
On my first play through I never got all five classes to lv 10 and on my second playthrough I stuck with one squad the whole time and while 4 of them got to lv10 easily I was worried no5 (my tecker) wasn’t going to get there before the end.
This is NOT an xp farm
To get some easy xp
* I loaded the refinery (no reason),
* I used the barrage skill on an empty area
* before it landed I sent four expendable marines into the kill box. They died.
* my tecker then collected their dog tags and gained three levels (the expendable were reasonably high level) and jumped to lv 10. (You have to exfiltrate from the mission and manually promote your marine to lv them up).
This is not an xp farm obviously and you’ll probably want to reload your save once done, or redeploy to sacrifice more low level expendables.

To add to the idea of killing off extra marines for XP dog tags... (this suggestion means you can't unlock the achievement to keep all marines alive in one campaign)
DO NOT complete the 5th mission where you return to Pioneer Station and Deactivate Cerberus. You can kill the androids and Queen, just don't Interact with the panel in the back room to Deactivate Cerberus.
Return to the Otago and start skipping days. Days and Planet Infestation don't matter before the end of mission 5.
When skipping a day, always select the Expedition to investigate the outpost where you:
- Lose deployment.
Gain one of the following:
- Earn 50 materials.
- Earn 10 xenosamples.
- Rescue 1 random survivor.
YOU WANT THAT SURVIVOR TO BE A MARINE.
If it's a marine, stop skipping days, select BARRACKS and TRAINING ROOM.
Put your new marine into training and start skipping days again.
TRAINING STOPS/MAXES AT LEVEL 4.
Remove the marine from training and promote to whatever. You're gonna kill him off for XP.
Repeat as much as you're willing.
I had 20+ marines, 13,000 materials, 500 xenosamples, 15 engineers & 20 physicians, all while beyond day 300.
Four of my classes were level 9, Tekker level 8, and hadn't finished mission 5 yet.
UPDATE: 19 Feb 2024.
I can confirm this works wonderfully.
After mission 5, you only have 30 days to complete the campaign, so save tools wisely for REST instead of sentry repairs or a quick 2 command points. That way you don't have to return to the Otago and use a day.
Resting does not disable sentries. FYI

These level 10 achievements are glitches for me. Won’t pop despite getting all classes to level 10

The conditions for obtaining the trophy are to upgrade all 5 classes of marines to level 10 during one playthrough. Experience for increasing the level of marines is awarded only for completing goals. Both main and additional + for destroying boss queens.
Simply shooting enemies along the way does not bring anything to the fighters except wasting ammunition, increasing the level of stress and aggression of the hive.
In order to ensure that your Marines do not get tired and, accordingly, do not miss missions as a result of exhaustion, I highly recommend unlocking the “ Firm Will ” attribute skill as soon as possible. Then the Marine is no longer affected by the fatigue effect. This way you can take and upgrade the Marines you need on missions.
There is also another optional method. Destroy attacking waves, those that come after the hive’s aggression scale is filled, between “easy and medium” 1 experience point and “medium and difficult” 1 experience point. It makes sense if at the end of the mission, before evacuation, you are 1-2 experience points short of the next level. But you should have a good defensive position, preferably with armored personnel carrier cover, a supply of clips, and turrets and tools/first aid kits (to relieve stress) will also not be superfluous.

If all the Marines need to be pumped up to 10 in one playthrough (I didn’t check for obvious reasons, but it looks like this is so), then the time will be right up there, even on easy (if you don’t devote enough time to this trophy from the very beginning)
Therefore, I recommend always betting plus or minus one team; it’s better to waste an extra day and heal everyone, instead of filling a slot with a newcomer.
At the difficulty level, the plot is given a 30-day time limit, which is more than enough.

The level of soldiers can also be raised on the ship in the intensive combat training center in the arsenal. But if you play, plus or minus, with the same composition of soldiers, then by the end of the game you can easily get everyone to level 10, just by going through missions.
