How to unlock the Freedom Hero achievement in BattleBlock Theater - Definitive Guide

(updated 5-5-13 with extensive revisions to with the exact cost progression of heads, and concomitant update to economical acquisition strategies)

This achievement is for acquiring all of the prisoner heads. This achievement does not count special heads (the star category), it only counts the four regular types: circle, triangle, square, rectangle. There are 64 heads of each type and thus 256 total heads. The heads can be acquired by purchase from the vending machines in the gift shop area, or via trade form another player. For each type of head there is one default “blank” head that is untradeable (you always have it), the other 63 can be traded. In order to pop the achievement you must possess all heads at one time, acquiring a head and then trading it away will not make progress towards the achievement.

The gift shop sell the heads from four vending machines sorted by type. These machines cost gems, starting at 10 gems and increasing based on how many heads of that type and total that you currently have (more on prices in the next paragraph). When you purchase a head it gives you a random unacquired head of that shape.

Head cost seems initially confusing but upon further testing proved to be fairly straightforward. The cost of new heads depends upon how many total heads (counting blank ones) you own, based on the following table:

4-59 heads: 10 gems
60-119 heads: 15 gems
120-179 heads: 20 gems
180-239 heads: 25 gems
240-255 heads: 30 gems

Note that 'star heads' do not count into this calculation at all. Additionally if you have too many of one head type then the price for that head type may be higher than the price for other heads. This system seems to be in place to raise the price if you try and buy different heads types on different profiles.

1-29 one type: 10 gems minimum
30-59 one type: 15 gems minimum
60-63 one type: 20 gems minimum

To buy all of the heads and get this achievement will take a large number of gems based upon the method used. You can buy each head type in turn, though this will be the most expensive way as you are paying the premium on the first head type. Total cost of this sequential method is 4795. Alternately, you can buy heads from enough different types so that you avoid the premium pricing (ie never buy heads at 15 or 20 if other heads types are offered for less). Total cost of this ‘smart’ strategy is 4640 and this is the minimum without using multiple accounts or getting heads in trade. Finally the last and cheapest way is to create three additional profiles and buy each head type separately (the main will buy the first head type) and then trade the heads to your main at the end. This will cost 820 gems per type you buy for a total of 3280. Note that you can discount the above prices by 40 if you intend to keep the starter non-blank heads you get.

How to get all these gems? Other than just through normal progression (which would be hard to estimate time), I identify three major ways to get gems, and calculate rate of earning gems:

regular arena mode: ~0.5-2.5 gems/min
local 4 player arena: ~10 gems/min
gem trade glitch: ~100 gems/min

If you just play single player arena matches, these typically last 2 minutes and you earn 1-5 gems, for a rate of 0.5-2.5 gems/min. If you have four local controllers, you can play the challenge mode (more than one player required to complete) in coop with all four players (detailed below) and earn 16 gems for every round of slightly <2min, for a rate of ~10 gems/min. Finally is the trade glitch which can earn 100 gems/min if you can execute 5 trades/min

The trade glitch can be exploited to get essentially infinite money fairly quickly. This may eventually get patched, but currently it works (I will try and update the solution if it ceases to work). What you need to do is to create an additional profile that will be basically an empty profile. Then trade away all the four starter heads that come on this profile until there are no heads. You cannot trade a head to a recipient who already has that head, so if your 'empty' profile happens to start with a head that your main acct has you may need to create a third profile to trade that head to so that your second profile can be empty. The next time you enter the trade window with this empty profile, it will automatically offer up 25 gems as trade. With your profile that is collecting the money trade 5 gems. This will result in setting the empty profile to 5 gems, while your money profile will have a net increase of 20 gems. Re-enter the trade window and the empty profile will offer up a 25 gem trade again and just execute the same 5 for 25 trade. This can be repeated as many times as you desire for a net gain of 20 gems per transaction (the reason you need to trade 5 gems is that without at least 5 gems the empty profile cannot enter the trade booth).

A couple other minor factors can speed things up. When executing trades, the cursor starts at the position of your current head. Therefore when doing the money generating trade it is advisable to have your head be the head that is directly below the 5 gems slot in order to more quickly (a cat circle head guy). If you are trading 0 gems (in order to transfer heads) you want the circle head that is directly below the 0 gems slot.

If you don’t want to do the trade glitch (or can’t because it has been patched out), the next best way is to use the 4 player arena coop challenges (multiple players required to complete level option). Sign in all four players to profiles (guests can’t trade), and play one of the easier levels. Generally you can get through 95% of the level completely solo, but there will be one spot where you need a second player to stand on something to make a platform appear, or throw you up to get a gem, etc. Play through the level as normal with one controller leaving the other three at the entrance. When you get to the two player section, suicide with a second player (to warp them to the closest checkpoint to you) and then use two controllers to get past the 2-player spot (this may require a bit of contortion), then finish the level as normal. You will earn 4 gems for each signed-in player, or 16 total.

With all this information, it is simple to calculate an estimated time to both earn enough gems to purchase all of the heads, and transfer all heads to your main profile in order to estimate how long it will take to get the achievement, and thus the best way to go about it. I assume 5 trades/min rate, and the gems/min rate in the above table:

buy mode gems cost trades time (glitch) time (4ply arena)
-------------- -------------- -------- --------------- --------------
1 acct, sequential 4795 0 extra 48 min 480 min
1 acct, smart 4640 0 extra 46 min 460 min
multi, sequential 3280 192 extra 71 min 368 min

When using the gem trade glitch single account is clearly best as the extra price (at 100 gems/min) are still much less than the equivalent time to transfer the 192 heads to your main, however if you desire to earn the gems via non-glitch means, the chief consideration is price, and the multi account method is preferred. This holds even more so for regular arena or progression-based modes of earning the gems.

If you have a whole bunch of extra controllers, the fastest (non 25 gems glitch) way that i found to farm gems is to solo the multiplayer time challenges. If you log in all four controllers, and play one of the early challenges, usually 95% of the level can be completed with a single player, just play through, leaving the other three at the start. Then there will be usually one section where you need a second player to throw you or stand on a block to make a platform appear, etc. suicide with a second controller (to teleport that player to the nearest checkpoint to the segment), then quickly use both controllers to complete the 2-player section, and then finish the level with your main controller (only one player needs to exit to finish), then you will earn 4 gems x 4 players = 16 gems for ~2 min or work. Eventually you need to trade your gems from the other profiles onto your main. This way is still way way slower than using the +20 gems trade glitch detailed in my solution so i left it out (as the solution was already pretty bloated in size).

21.05.13: Could not get the infinite trade glitch to work, the empty profile wouldn't offer any gems as substitution for not having any heads... Shame, but I have the 4 solo and co-op modes so will get my heads legitimately.

5-22-13: @MugenKairo. Tested it post-patch, and also today and it still works fine. Is your 'empty' profie actually empty of all heads? note that recently there was a special (star) head that it gave out to anybody who loaded the game while connected online, which might have given you a head you didnt realize you had.

Thanks for posting that gem trick. It helped me finish off buying all the prisoners after I was done with my solo (normal/insane) playthroughs. For some reason it wouldn't work online for me, so I just cleared the update and did the gem trick offline.

I'm not aware of any patches since last month when I confirmed that it worked for a friend.

Does your 'empty' account have at least 5 gems? If you are completely empty of things to trade (heads, gems, and yarn), then no you cannot enter the trade booth, which is why solution states to always trade back 5 gems. Play a level or two on your empty account to earn at least five gems and then try again.

Now think it has been fixed...now whenever a new account gets started two masks are instantly given...thus everyone has those two masks...so no matter what i can not get rid of the Donut and the Black mask under the star icon...sucks im pissed cause this new free mask thing just happned like a day or 2 ago and looks like i barely missed my chance

Ok what i said above is true..ALTHOUGH that only affaects accounts who go ONLINE... so if need to do the glitch you HAVE to start your "blank" account OFFLINE and keep it that way, or else the game instantly will give you 2 masks that your main already has and will be impossible to do this glitch...i think it was Behemoths way of giving something away for free at the same time fixing a pretty big exploit...but as always there is a way around it LOL

(7-23-14): Yeah they did this free head just for going online thing at times earlier (see my comment dated May 22 last year). Since the game is free right now bringing a lot more traffic to the solution, I'll try and remember to look into this tonight and update solution to reflect the "do not take your 'blank' account online" fix for when this is the case.

Works perfectly, just make sure you are offline when you start the game up and you don't get the special heads. Took me about an hour (whilst I was watching a film) to go from near enough 0 to 5000 gems

Thanks dude

Thanks for posting this! Works great, this would take forever without this work-around.

I had to make a third profile to trade off the heads (I already had all of one type on my main profile as well as several others). As stated, do it offline, then just reconnect when buying the heads if you want the time stamps.

This does not work. I tried offline, and online local game. I tried it with one of my other xbox accounts and a second controller. With the other account it had special heads. With no account I could not enter the trade with the second controller. When I got rid of the special heads, I could no longer press y to trade in the trade center. both offline and online.

Did you have at least 5 gems on the character with no heads? You have to have something to trade with, if you have no heads and no gems (or if as you mention you are not signed into any profile) then correct you cannot enter the booth. Do one level with your empty profile and earn at least 5 gems and you should find you can enter the booth and the method will work.

You need to play with your empty profile and get 5 gems, then start trading. A fully empty profile wont be able to enter the trade booth

First, glitch works great. Before I started glitch, I already had 114 prisoners, so new acc could not give me any head. I created 3rd acc and gave him all, and after that, each time I entered trading room I was able to give 25 gems. So I did glitch with both new accounts, farmed 3000 gems and then gave them all to my main acc. Also I did it all in online. Took ~ 40 mins.

Worked great. Wouldn't hurt to slim down the guide, though. It's such a simple guide that the large body of text kind of dilutes the simplicity. Also since the guide doesn't mention the glitch right away, it seems as though many of my friends didn't bother reading through the whole guide. They were asking how I got the achievement so quick, etc.

Confirmed working as of 10/04/2022

Make sure that all empty account heads are of heads you don’t have! Also, be sure to trade back 5 gems for the 25 the empty account offers! You’ll get back 20 each time just make sure you’re always trading 5 gems back!

If you messed up like i did and bought every head in one shape during this glitch, below is a fix.

•Load a game with 2 dummy accounts
•With Dummy(A) Trade off all 4 heads to Dummy(B)
•Back out and load up a game with your main account and the “Dummy (A)” account.
•As long as Dummy (A) still has his 10 Gems you’ll be able to do this glitch now.

*Be sure to trade 5 gems back for every 25 that is offered via trade. You’ll get back 20 gems each time*

(5-5-13) I updated the solution extensively based on finding the exact pricing of the heads and expressly calculating the cost/benefit analysis between using one account and/or multiple accounts price versus extra trade time.

Thanks for the solution, worked great! One point to add when using the trade/glitch solution. I had already bought all the head shapes of one type before starting on this achievement which therefore made it impossible to buy the one head shape I already had from the 2nd profile in order to leave them with no heads. To get around this I created a 3rd profile and sold all the heads from the 2nd profile to that and then I could proceed with the 5/25 gems solution as you described above.

The gem trade glitch still works, and it's fantastic. It's also more like 160/min if you are quick and use your right hand for both controller buttons and your left hand for selecting the 5 gem trade for the profile collecting the gems (right hand thumb for main controller A/Y, index finger for RT, ring finger for second controller A/Y underneath.)

I've got the glitch to work while offline with a second and third account but as soon as I try and sign into my main account it kicks me from the game and starts over. This is a huge problem. Did you guys have your Xbox 360 offline until the last trade because whenever I start the game offline it says I don't own the full game and achievements can't be unlocked unless I'm online and as soon as I try she connect to online it kicks me from the game.

Update: This method no longer works if you're online as you automatically get two heads on a new save. As long as you're not connected to Xbox Live, you can still do this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This idea came to me while I was grinding gems, and I'm surprised I didn't utilize it sooner as it could have saved several hours of play time.

When your first start the game, all prisoner heads are 10 gems each, and increase to 15 after a set amount have been unlocked. Keep buying enough from one group until you have them all, and then stop buying. Now use a second profile (cannot be guest), and pass all your gems from your main profile to the second profile (trading all gems for 0), then have your second profile buy the prisoner heads of another group. Continue to let the second profile buy prisoner heads for you, while you're collecting gems from solo/co-op play.

Eventually, the second profile will have collected enough gems from your progress to buy all heads from one group. Now you can trade all the heads to your main profile (with 0 gems).

You can then repeat this process with another profile, making sure to buy all heads from the same group outside that of what your main profile and previous profile(s) had bought, before trading to avoid getting any you already have with your main profile.

If you are planning to help a friend over Xbox LIVE get this achievement early by trading all your heads to them, please take caution that it is possible that some of your heads will disappear upon tradeback. The reason for this is that the game doesn't typically save the heads in your stats (they'll be blank) until you finish a level or arena match, and sometimes a trade might not go through correctly if you're both rushing.

Also, to clear things up, you do not need any of the Star heads to obtain this achievement. The only way to get these is to play Furbottom's Features.

This calculation is based on the increments of the pricing for one group. For example, after buying 32 heads from one group, the price increases to 15 heads each. So...

First 32 heads at 10 gems each is 320 total.
Last 32 heads at 15 gems each is 480 total.
That's 800 gems.

So overall you'd need 3200 gems, that is of course if this calculation is correct, as the head price increase may happen before or after the amount I mention. Any clarification on this would be appreciated.

To be clear though, you're still saving more gems this way as you can buy six heads early for 60 gems as opposed to buying just two for the same amount towards the end.

It gradually increases to 30 gems each and it adds up over time, for example 12 heads would cost 360 gems. This method is to save time as you're paying less for each head.

I grinded to 4000 gems and still hadn't unlocked them all before utilising this method to get the last 30 or so. The 3rd group was costing 20 from the first one and then increased to 25; the 4th group started at 25. I started using this method before seeing it increase so I don't know when/if it does increase again. Now I just wish I'd seen/thought of this before I spent hours grinding gems.

Huh, interesting note about the 25 gems. If it's a forced prompt that causes 25 gems to be traded after giving away the four starting heads... I wonder if there's a hidden variable where 'losing' those heads early causes the gem counter to think it's at least on 25 gems for the second profile...

If anyone else can confirm that this bug does happen, I'll add it to the solution.

If you'd rather not do any glitches, then this guide is for you.

The fastest legit gem farming method is simple.

Firstly, you need two XBL accounts (your main and a spare). The spare does not need to have XBL gold. You could use a guest but your gems/hr will decrease.

Start local game, arena, muckle and continuously play the first three doors. You'll need to kill your spare account once every round and then simply wait for the time to run out (only 2 minutes).

Equipping the fire ball item with your main will make it a little easier killing the spare account.

Then, trade the gems earned on the second account to your main every so often in the gift shop.

Of course, if you get a golden hat spawn, that increases gems/hr.

Doing this will give you 5 gems every 2 minutes, which equates to around 200 gems per hour.

This is fantastic to do while doing something else as it requires little attention.

There are 257 heads required required for the achievement, consisting of all the heads in each of the four basic head shapes, and the plain Star head. The rest of the star heads are special and obtained from proms, and don't count towards the achievement. When starting the game, every player will start with one additional random head of each of the four different head shapes. Prisoners initially cost 10 gems each, but the price will gradually increase by 5 gems until they cost 30 gems a piece. The total number of gems to unlock every prisoner solely from the venting machines is close to 4500. Gotta catch em all.

Even after completing the story in all four modes it is unlikely that you will have enough gems to buy all of the heads. Replaying levels to get the A++ will earn you two bonus gems in addition to any gems you missed before. Another ten gems are earned for carrying a randomly occurring Golden Hat to the exit. Gems can also be earned in 'Furbottom's Feature,' which has a single player and a co-op chapter that changes every other week. Finally gems can be earned in the arena mode. Four gems for a win, one for a loss and a bonus gem for the MVP(Most Violent Player.)

The fastest way to earn gems to to grind arena matches offline with a dummy controller, then set up a game of muckel, once the game starts kill your dummy once and then let to two minutes run out. Repeat as necessary. This will earn you five gems per game, four for the win and one for the MVP(most violent player) bonus. Additionally the dummy will earn one gem per game, these can then transferred to the main using the trading booth (Make sure dummy account is not a guest, or the game will not allow you to trade).

Here's a chart from the Behemoth that shows all of the regular characters in the game:

We use a glitch for an endless exchange of diamonds, it’s better to start as early as possible.

You will need two controllers.

  • Create a “clean” profile on the second gamepad, “clean” means that this profile has never played the game, has not collected diamonds, balls and hats.
  • Start a local co-op game and go to the exchange point in the gift shop.
Now, take a closer look:

  • First gamepad : ~ selects 0 diamonds.
  • Second gamepad : ~ selects one of four hats.
  • Deal! Repeat with the remaining 3 caps, 0 diamond cap.
  • Now, you will have access to the diamond glitch.
  • First gamepad : ~ selects 5 diamonds.
  • Second gamepad : ~ does not select anything (default 25 diamonds).
  • Deal! You get 20 diamonds, the bot gets 5.
  • You can repeat the 5 for 25 exchange as much as you like.
Notes:

  • If the created “clean” profile contains hats that your main character already has, then you will have to create a new profile, according to the glitch, the “dummy” must give up all 4 hats and be left with nothing.
  • Exchange 5 for 25 is required! If you exchange 0 for 25, then in this case you will lose the opportunity to use the glitch on the current “dummy”.
  • Using this glitch, you can get 100-120 diamonds per minute.
  • The performance of the glitch was tested by me personally on the latest version of the game.

  • An exchange of 5 for 25 is required! If you exchange 0 for 25, then in this case you will lose the opportunity to use the glitch on the current “dummy”.
Provided that the “dummy” (second profile) did not play, you can go through the first map of the first part again in co-op. After my playthrough, the “dummy” got ONE ball and ZERO diamonds, and the ability to exchange items (the ability to use a glitch):

  • First gamepad : ~ selects FIVE diamonds.
  • Second gamepad : ~ selects ZERO diamonds.
  • Deal! The Second gamepad (the “dummy”) will now again have 25 diamonds, and this glitch for the First gamepad (main profile) can be continued.
PS I would like to note that if you have not completed the game with your main profile beyond the first two maps of the first part, then to get the achievement you will need to buy 252 masks, on which you will have to spend APPROXIMATELY 4800 diamonds (IF you do not complete the game, do not exchange with other players/profiles, only if you buy).
