How to unlock the Taffer's Delight achievement in BioShock Infinite - Definitive Guide
Description: 'Completed Burial at Sea - Episode 2 in 1998 mode.
You only get the crossbow as a weapon for the game, and even as such you only get 4 normal tranq bolts, 2 gas and 5 alarm bolts maximum. You get access to all plasmids but I only suggest using Peeping Tom and Possession. The reason is:
Peeping Tom when upgraded with the Cloak Mod allows you to stay invisible without using Adam when standing still. You can also get a Mod called Peeping Vision which removes the cost of seeing enemies/items through walls which is also invaluable.
Possession is good for using on vending machines to get spare coins and disarming turrets.
You want to spend the majority of your cash on lockpicks as they come in very handy.
Try to bait enemies to you by making noise, then cloak with Peeping Tom and melee them when close. Again this strategy requires the upgrade to work efficiently.
Both upgrades for Peeping Tom are found in level one, one in the Service Bay area and one in the Manta Ray Lounge.
When you find armoured enemies just body-shot them with tranq rounds.
Later in the game you'll encounter Fire-Plasmid weilding enemies which are a pain. Try staying hidden and use your tranq bolts/ gas bolts.
If you're spotted try use a hook jump to escape. Cloaking in a new area tends to remove interest.
Stealth is the only way to get things done, but also remember to use alarm bolts to sneak past enemies when you simply need to re-tread ground to go from A to B.
You also CAN be spotted and keep going, this isn't like those achievements in Dishonored or Thief.
I should also preface this by saying this guide assumes you have already beaten Burial at Sea Episode II at least once, and assumes you're not using this for a single playthrough to get all of the achievements. It's meant for players only seeking this achievement and not all the others.
Stealth, as you already know going into this, is key. There are things you can do to minimize your chances of being caught.
1) If enemies are in the area, remain crouched while moving unless you have to move quickly. You are generally more silent and will remain hidden behind small cover.
2) Certain actions will give away your position and draw enemies to your attention, so be aware of these three things:
A) Walking through any puddle or stream of water, even while crouched. Walk around them if you can.
B) Walking over glass shards, even while crouched. They will crunch loudly. Walk around them if you can.
C) Hanging onto any Air Grabber hook for too long. It takes a while, but you'll hear them buckle and start to snap. You will not fall, but your enemies will hear this.
Now, these can be good things, especially if you are trying to lure them around the corner so you can use your melee knockout, or get them to move out of potential cover to hit them with your crossbow without leaving cover yourself. But you should be aware of the three things regardless.
3) Unless they are in your way, there is little to no benefit in actually engaging enemies in combat. Avoid combat if you can, particularly in the Columbia level and after the Return to Rapture ambush.
If you must go into combat, a few things to remember.
A) Fire and Ice splicers are resistant to the effects of both the Tranquilizer Bolts and the Gas Bolts. Either Bolt will stun them but they will recover. In all of my playthroughs, I had to follow up either Bolt with a melee attack to actually knock them out. I could be wrong about this, but more than once I watched them recover. Don't take chances. NOTE: Although I haven't experienced this, DemonRaider1138 reports that if you headshot these splicers with the Tranq Bolt they will go down without need of a melee followup. Aim your shots carefully if you can.
B) As previously mentioned by Andreka0, helmeted enemies cannot be subdued with melee. Use Possession or the crossbow. Hooded enemies, on the other hand, can be subdued with the melee attack.
C) The AI is notoriously bad at simply coming around corners when they are in the "yellow" alerted stage. Use this to your advantage, especially once you've upgraded Peeping Tom so that you can turn invisible and remain in place without wasting Eve. You can take out multiple enemies this way if you get spotted in Columbia.
D) You can often recover your Tranquilizer Bolts from downed enemies. If you are forced to use them and can search the sleeping body, do so.
4) Be wary of relying on Possessed Turrets for offense. According to the BioShock wiki, because the achievement is based on using non-lethal methods, Possessing the turret will prevent them from attacking you but they will not attack enemies for you.
5) Do not waste time getting Audio Diaries, Voxophones, Secondary Objectives, or Upgrades to Old Ironsides unless you want to. None of them are required or will really aid you.
6) Don't bother exploring while in Columbia. There is nothing there you need unless you are low on supplies. Get in, get out. There are plenty of alternate paths available by using vents or tunnels under the floorboards. After you remove the security lockdown, it might be easier to go invisible and make a mad dash to the right back into the room with the Songbird Prototype and just backtrack your way through the lab. You will encounter single enemies or pairs of enemies on your way, but nothing like the hoard of enemies in the stairways outside the room with the lockdown switch.
7) As sillimarci pointed out, the best place to ride out the Return to Rapture ambush in Suchong's lab is the locked door with the Turret and Old Man Winter Upgrade. There is only one way in and you can hide around the corner. This provides you ample cover and forces them to attack you from a single vantage point. How you deal with them is up to you. I melee'd when I could, and used Tranquilizer Bolts when I had to, but using Possession or Old Man Winter are also good options. You will face approximately 2 Fire splicers and 6-7 regular enemies, so don't leave the room until Elizabeth taunts Ryan about having won the fight.
After you have survived this ambush, go outside the Silver Fin restaurant and go invisible. Ryan and Atlas's thugs are going to fight it out for a while. Eventually Ryan's forces should win this, but the combat will reduce the total number of enemies on the field. MOST of them will congregate on the stairs in front of the Manta Ray lounge after the fight. You can sneak by them using Peeping Tom if you want, or use Gas Bolts to knock most or all of them out.
Engage as few people as you can in the Lounge after that, but don't bother sparing any of your remaining ammunition or health packs. Your only objective is getting to the elevator. You will not have any further combat once you get into the elevator, so Tranquilize and Melee whomever you need to, use noisemakers for distractions, use Peeping Tom to run while invisible, and burn all of your health packs if you take damage.
In 1998 mode you're supposed to use the stealth approach and non-lethal weapons.
That means that your arsenal is: three gas bolts, four tranquilizer bolts, and five alarm bolts. And your plamids, of course, that work the same as in other modes (with the exception of Possession) but EVE runs out much more quickly. Health is severely reduced and one or two blows will kill you easily. Ammo is scarce, enemies detect you easily and you can't use the hint button (default N on keyboard).
That all being said, this mode isn't a big challenge. The key here is to follow the basic premisse to a T: Be stealthy. You can pretty much avoid conflict most of the time, and although enemies can discover you more easily, the AI is still kinda dumb and if you hide for a few seconds they will go back to normal mode instead of "alerted". In many stages of the game that are full of enemies (an example would be the start of the "back to Columbia" part), you can pretty much knock one or two enemies and sneak (or rush) through the rest of them.
Other general tips are:
-Abuse the Peeping Tom plasmid. The Mod that enables it to not use EVE to see through walls is a must a well, so get it as soon as possible. Possession is less powerful in this mode, but it (and Old Man Winter) can be great for moments of panic when you're overwhelmed with enemies and you can still get money from the vending machines with it. I'd recommend following a guide to find all mods for these plasmids. Ironsides isn't that useful in this mode.
-Save money for lockpicks, since opening certain areas can save you (for example, during the ambush after you go back to rapture, the locked freezing area is a great spot to hold up and pick each enemy that comes through)
-You do have to mind your use of the crossbow ammo, but if you're quick enough you can salvage your tranquilizer arrow back from the body of the downed target. Using the alarm bolt to divert enemy attention is always a useful strategy. Now the gas bolt is best used in addition with the alarm bolt, and that in crucial in certain areas. More on that on the next tips.
-After you get the Hair sample and open the security doors in that area, the place will be swarmed with enemies. This is a great place to dispatch many enemies with the gas bolt. Just use an alarm one and four or more enemies will come close to it. Use the gas bolt, and few will remain. Opening a path for your escape.
-The Manta Ray lounge is probably the hardest area of the DLC. Because of the fire wielding enemy and if you alert one, many will come after. The fire wielding one can be knocked out right at the start. You can either stun him will a tranq arrow or freeze him with Old Man Winter, quickly dispatch of the other enemy with another arrow and run to stunned enemy and knock him down. There will be many enemies left, but use the same strategy of alarm and gas bolt to get rid of many. The rest is all a matter of being careful and using Peeping Tom.
And that's about it. This mode isn't as hard as it seems. This DLC is rather short and you'll be finishing this in almost no time, with not much frustration.
1998 mode is the new mode in this DLC and can be selected from the beginning. It is on the same level as Normal difficulty except you have to take all your enemies out by non-lethal means which means you can only use your crossbow and Air Grabber/Sky Hook. You will not be able pick up any weapons that can kill enemies so you won’t have to worry about accidentally killing anyone. Much like 1999 mode the waypoint marker is not available.
Make sure not to pick 1999 mode in the beginning as you will be disappointed to finish the DLC and not get the trophy since you picked the wrong difficulty so make sure you pick 1998 mode. This difficulty is not hard at all, it is essentially normal mode except you have to play stealthily. Some tips I found useful are:
- Use Peeping Tom as much as possible since it makes you invisible and makes it easier to take out enemies and hide. Especially if you get both upgrades since both upgrades will allow you to use Peeping Tom while standing still without using any Eve, see Never Saw It Coming for its location.
- Make use of the noisemakers as that can distract enemies and move them out of your way.
- A handy tip is to make noise at a corner, wait for the enemy to round the corner and knock him out with . The enemy won’t have enough time to register you a threat so you can take him out easily.
- You don't have to fight all enemies, just about all fights can be bypassed apart from the fight with Andrew Ryan's men when you are trapped.
- Use the Tranquillisers on armoured enemies and on the Fire Plasmid wielding enemies since they will go down in one shot.
- If you are ever caught you can run and hide to escape the enemies and lose their attention. Peeping Tom is great for escaping an enemy's sights.
- Use Possession on vending machines for extra cash and turrets if you are stuck.
