How to unlock the Hit & Step: A Student achievement in Body and Brain Connection - Definitive Guide

Hit & Step was giving me real problems. I got an A relatively easily, but getting an A+ was really frustrating me. This is mostly because it never read my feet on a consistent basis. So, after finally figuring out what this game wants you to do, I thought that I would share how I got this.

First, I hate to say this, but unless you have a ridiculously good memory, you will most likely have to use the guide-button trick to pause the game during the sequences (i.e., to mark down the order of the "hits" and the "steps"). This sounds bloody lame, but all I can say is that if you have tried to do this legit...you will know why I say this.

Anyway, about the feet. If you are like me, you will naturally try to make a kicking motion (with the proper foot) towards the target. This is not what the game wants you to do - which explains perhaps why "kicking at the target" doesn't work consistently. What the game actually wants you to do is to simply step (ideally lifting your leg knee-high) with the proper leg. If you are playing at the advanced difficultly, and it is a combo (e.g, Upper Right Hand + Left Foot), then you will need to time it properly (this isn't hard).

Hopefully this helps you out, because I was absolutely hating this game in large part due to this mini-game.

Note 1: I know that for this achievement, that you only need an A on each difficulty (i.e., getting 6 out of the 7 sequences right), but given how you need to get an A+ on each difficulty in Hit & Step (7 out of 7) for another achievement, I figured I'd add this solution.

Note 2: In the easy difficulty, you don't need to use your feet at all, but I'd still recommend using the guide button tactic.

I also suggest as an alternative using your video camera on your phone to record the steps.

Worst fucking game ever. Rarely registers the double hit.

Been there dude! It's very frustrating. I doubt I'll ever get to completing it (the game). I may get the A rating one, but I'll never A+ every thing.

A tip for the double hits though is to lift the leg in question so that your knee is parallel with the ground. Doing it slowly too...no rushing. I was ecstatic to get this chievo done. =)

Still haven't gotten it? That sucks dude. :(

Just try doing a normal stepping motion, and not a kicking one. That worked wonders for me even though I'm sure you tried that already.

I figured it out!!! So the issue with this achievement besides the fact that the Kinect doesn't recognize you worth shit, is that if you wait too long to do a double tap it fails you. The idea is to pause the game two steps before a double so that you can hit the double right after a single, then it's no problem. Now there are still Kinect recognition issues, but after 200 tries I was able to get a smooth run with limited doubles. Anyway, if anyone has problems with this, just make sure you hit the double right after a single and don't hesitate or it will fail you.

I've officially now gotten an A+ in every exercise including endless modes. All I need is the group achivements and this POS is done. Thanks for your help!

After an hour or so i finally got A+ on advanced! My suggestion is when there is a double you have paused. (Always hold the controller in hand and write down like the guide says) When doing the double just at the same time you are moving your hand in the right direction step on HARD with the foot on the floor. landing the foot at the same time as the arm is moving fast in the correct direction ends up 80% of the time as a correct hit. The problem is getting all correct in one game...angry Extremely frustrating to get A+ on this one.

I still can't get this damn thing to register my hits. I'm only getting like 10% of them even though I have good rhythm. It even looks like it's hitting at the EXACT same time and yet it gives the big fat X. After you lift your leg slowly, are you hitting fast or hitting slowly as well? I'm trying to figure out if my leg or my hand is hitting first to figure out the timing issue. Any excruciating detail you can provide would be great as I know I can 100% this game except for this one stupid exercise... uggh

OK, so just to mostly reiterate what others have said:

1. Write down the moves. Guide button every move if you have to. Guide button for no reason at all if you need it.
2. Guide button when completing every move, ideally when you are in the position and it has registered (before you pull your arm back). Sometimes janky Kinect recognition can get confused and make you twist/elbow the wrong answer - pause, reset, unpause. I didn't always do it but I tended to do it on up motions and steps to avoid nonsense movement risks.
3. For doubles (arm + foot) - I can't emphasize this enough, step (as the title says) - do not kick or otherwise try to put your foot where the box is on the screen. STEP. Imagine it's a foot pedal for high hat or bass drum (which matches the sounds, incidentally).
4. Similarly, for arms, don't reach for the boxes exactly - up is basically 1/11 o'clock on an analog watch, side is 3 o'clock or even 4 o'clock (9/8 on the left). The game is more error tolerant with arm moves but don't give it a reason to get confused.
5. The last two sequences are both 8 moves. I started to freak out that I missed #9. Nope. The 7 sequences are 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8 moves.
6. Take a break, sleep on it. Got it on my first try today after two prior sessions of struggling. Clear your head and focus on the fundamental movements (especially to STEP).

It was hard enough to get it right on the others and now this on advanced! This is really a stupid piece of shit and has nothing to do with memory if you fail. angry

Awesome, Mattias!

I completely agree that this game is very frustrating, although I have applied what I learned to a few other difficult Kinect achievements (i.e., guide button trick).
