How to unlock the Combat Hardened achievement in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - Definitive Guide

Hello,
03/04/2021 update
**********
Thank you for everyone's comments, Maka91 cleared up the issue in a comment
" If you press X at the mission select, and start the game on a new save slot under Veteran, you'll only need to complete 1 ending (Ashes to Ashes is easier). If you level select your way through a previous save, you'll need to do both ending if you have them both unlocked."
Full credit goes to him on this note, which also makes sense since I did Veteran on my first run through and just went back and did level select through the menu.

Thank you Maka91, never though I would ever get a comment on a solution from someone I watch and admire. toast Definitely a high point for me as an achievement hunter even if it's a basic guide on a pretty straightforward achievement.

******
Some have mentioned in the comments that they didn't need to complete Ashes to Ashes if they didn't chose that ending. For me I did then it popped so your mileage may vary
******

I would like to echo the other guides in saying it is to beat the campaign on Veteran.
But in order for the achievement to pop you must complete both missions, Ashes to Ashes and The Final Countdown. The choice for the different missions to either
is found in the mission Identity Crisis.

Another side not is you DO NOT need to complete the side missions for this to unlock. I had only completed one (Red Circus) during my Veteran play through and still got the pop.

Hope this helps, Happy Hunting.

Just posting back my results, chose Veteran on my first playthrough, chose Final Countdown to be my ending and unlocked at the end.

I did not have Ashes to Ashes unlocked and in my mission select at this point, this may be the cause for both missions needing completion. Certainly good to know if anyone finds it not unlocking.

Actually I just did this and you don't need to complete both endings. I did this for my 2nd playthrough and I ended with Ashes to Ashes since I did The Final Countdown on my recruit playthrough. I was planning on going back and redoing The Final Countdown based on what you said, but the achievement popped upon completion of Ashes to Ashes

It seems that the solution of finishing both missions by selecting the difficulty no longer works. I've already done the last two (Ashes to Ashes and The Final Countdown) on veteran difficulty and I still haven't the achievement.

Ignore my previous comment, the campaign isn't that difficult on Veteran. Managed to complete it all in a day. You just have to patient, and not rush through areas, make sure you wipe out all enemies before advancing. Surprised on how easy it was, perhaps Veteran got toned down because of the Realism difficulty

Just got this one easiest way was making sure you change the ending mission to ashes to ashes if you havent picked it already. In my case i was stuck on the final countdown and was getting destroyed, so replay interigation on veteran and what i did was act like i was friends then pick lie. Also not sure if this affects it but after that was done the game gave me the option to go into another room and call in soviet backup i did this. Thankfully call of duty doesnt boot you to mission select screen when you are done. So i went to ashes to ashes map and called the strike and after that its just if you want the ending to be kill adler or killed by him. Im just so happy i dont have to replay the entire game again to select the easy ending.

Just did my Veteran run and unlocked it after Ashes to Ashes (lie). Doing a minimal run focusing on completing what is necessary.

No side missions and no need to replay the other one (truth) in my case. Not changing the difficulty if I needed to bring myself back to the main menu or safehouse to bring myself to the correct campaign level if it pushed me through to repeating one already done.

Just completed veteran this afternoon, only completing the 'truth' option, so I guess only one of the choices needs to be completed for this achievement to pop. Having to do both looks like a glitch to me.
Veteran was actually a lot easier than expected. I did my first run on regular and some situations were actually quite hard to get past so I was expecting the worst for veteran, but it feels certain parts were actually easier to do.

So I just played a few missions out of order and I got the achievement despite not having completed all missions on Veteran.
It popped after finishing "The Final Countdown" but I haven't even finished "Desperate Measures" on Veteran. However, I did complete "Ashes to Ashes" but none of the side missions. If you do both endings, maybe you're allowed to skip one of the other main missions.

This has to be one of the easiest CoD campaigns on Veteran. Make sure you take the extra health and explosion resistance perks when building your character at the start. The are only two truly challenging parts, one where you are being extracted by a helicopter on a server (there is just no cover) and the other is a brief section in a car where you have to use a grenade launcher in the final mission (truth ending).

Yeah pretty easy to complete on Veteran. I tool through perks Violent Tendencies (bullet damage increase 25%) and Survivor (health increase by 25%).
I did all side missions as well, but didn't have Ashes to Ashes unlocked and still got the achievement at the end of The Final Countdown

Definitely one of the easier CoD campaigns on Veteran difficulty. I did both side missions however the achievement popped for me as soon as I completed "The Final Countdown", I did not have to do "Ashes to Ashes".

I took Aggressive Behavior and Calm Under Pressure as perks for Bell, but I had very little difficulty overall. In general, I'd say try to remain undetected during stealth sections, and take advantage of hidden weapons. For example, The Redeemer revolver you can find on "Echoes of a Cold War" and "End of the Line" is a one hit kill and ammo is plentiful.

Do I need to play the entire game (other than 1 ending) on Veteran or can I play on Recruit, do level select and just play the end level?

Why are people doing level select? Play recruit for EVERY mission including sides, then do the main ones AGAIN on Veteran?

The only way to do it, is to just do it. There aren't many tips or tricks to complete it, but this doesn't mean there aren't any tips.

SMOKE GRENADES
They are your best friend. The A.I. in this game is laughable, to say the least, so smoke grenades are perfect for getting out of a sticky situation as they practically become blind everytime you use them. Trust me, it makes Operation Chaos so much easier.

COVER
Use it at every opportunity. Going out guns-blazing will get you killed faster than you can say "Solovetsky".

YOUR ALLIES
They can't die and they can kill enemies. Use this to your advantage. If you find yourself overwhelmed, fall back and let Woods or Adler thin the ranks.

PLAY THE CAMPAIGN BEFOREHAND
I originally played the campaign on Hardened, so I could have a faint memory of where all the enemies were and develop my own strategies for each mission. Of course, this tip is optional if you're just really a glutton for punishment.

LIE TO ADLER AT THE END
Ashes to Ashes is a far easier mission than The Final Countdown. Make sure to radio Perseus before setting of to Duga however, and don't light Adler's cigarette for a calling card. Or attempt to light his cig, I don't control you.

TIPS FOR OPERATION RED CIRCUS
The few people with rocket launchers on the roof are not a big threat, as most of the time, they're gonna miss. The snipers should be your biggest concern however. Throw your evac smoke near the building you killed Rudnick in, and sit and wait for the enemies to flood in and pick them off. Use your smoke grenades to safely get to the chopper. Also, you don't need all of the evidence to successfully identify Perseus's key assets. You'll get a calling card if you identify all 3 suspects correctly

TIPS FOR OPERATION CHAOS
Use cover, abuse your friendly A.I., abuse smoke grenades. Also, pick up the M76! Keep in mind that you absolutely need all of the evidence to shut down Aldrich's spy ring. You'll get a calling card if you do.
