How to unlock the Legend Among Legends achievement in Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - Definitive Guide

This achievement is not as hard as it may seem. You just need to level up the classes some, and do a few practice runs on each level to learn the right path. They key to getting a 3 star rating is to keep the combo going throughout the majority of the level; you rarely have to combo the entire thing, but often have to hit 90% or so. See my level walkthroughs for more in-depth tips for each level.

CLASSES
These are the classes: Gunslinger (revolver), Ranger (rifle) and Trapper (shotgun). The Ranger and Trapper classes have a revolver secondary, while the Gunslinger class only has the revolver (but allows dual wield).

Level up all classes at least halfway (meaning 3 perks out of 6). They're all useful for one level or another. If you don't want to spend the time, you can skip out on leveling up Gunslinger as that's the least useful class in my opinion. I don't suggest it as the best class to use for any of the levels, but you might feel differently so experiment a little with all the classes.

The Trapper class can clear out any of the run-and-gun missions like Lincoln County or Grand Valley, while the Ranger class excels in long-range fights like Stinking Springs or Guadalupe Canyon. I feel both types of missions are a pain with the Gunslinger class, while they can be pretty easy with the other two.

GENERAL TIPS
- Use concentration (RB) whenever you can't find an enemy, or when you need to pull off an ill-timed, desperate reload! Don't use it for anything else. You don't need the bonus points from it to reach 3 stars, so only use it to extend your combo timer. It doesn't seem to work all the time, but sometimes if you enter concentration right as your combo timer ends, it'll revive the timer if you kill someone quickly enough. Worth a shot.

- Remember to quit concentration when you don't need it! You can press RB again to disable it and save your bar.

- Headshots, or any other type of special kill, really aren't important for your final score. They help, sure, but the real key to hitting the 3 star limit is to keep that combo going for as long as possible. A 50x or more will get you 3 stars every time.

- Always use barrels to extend your combo timer. One of the loading screens says that you can shoot bottles and birds too, but I've never seen any of those or tried it. Barrels are good enough.

- Don't bother with runners! Let them get to their favorite spot instead of wasting 5 seconds and 3 bullets trying to get them as they're sprinting. Shoot someone else, or a barrel or something, instead of even trying to get a sprinting runner.

- Melee is a one hit kill, so that's a fantastic way to prolong your combo if you're stuck in a reload with a guy right in your face.

- You can't shoot through falling bodies very efficiently, so don't even try.

LEVEL WALKTHROUGHS
01: Lincoln County
Class: Trapper
Score goal: 105,000
There's not much to this one. Play it a couple of times to learn the route, then just equip the Trapper class and tear ass through it. Kill everyone, use your focus during "slow" parts and sprint as much as possible.

02: Stinking Springs
Class: Ranger
Score goal: 140,000
Make your way into the house, killing everything in a combo, and using concentration if you need to. Use the rifle for one hit kills. Once you're at the window, remember to use concentration or to shoot out barrels whenever you can't find an enemy to shoot. They use a lot of pesky cover in this level and the difficulty will be in finding a clear shot.

You might have to replay this one a few times due to stragglers not showing up when they're supposed to, or because there's a ton of glitchy cover in this level - you'll clearly see their head sticking out and you'll be aiming right at it, but the bullet just doesn't hit. It's pretty frustrating and I haven't found a good way around it.

03: Gold Rush
Class: Trapper
Score goal: 170,000
Sprint through the corridors, blasting away at enemies and barrels with your shotgun. Always remember to keep an out for barrels to extend your combo timer. The first bit of the mine is almost like a maze; I used the right path at every turn to end up on the top of the "large" room (where all the other paths converge), then I activated concentration as I ran off the platform (run, don't jump!) there, and fired towards the barrels in the next tunnel. I also blew up the barrels in the room filled with them before I ran in there, then I sprinted through the room (as there's no one left to kill) and activated concentration in the next tunnel, to give myself some time until the next kill. The rest of the level is just a straightforward sprint through corridors.

04: Iron Springs
Class: Ranger
Score goal: 160,000
This one is a pain. It's hard to describe what to do, but I'll try: start off by filling up your ammo with the box in front of you. Wait for guys to amass in that area and start killing them off, then look up to the rooftop to the right and behind you (use concentration to find it) and take them out. Then turn around 180 degrees and pick off the guys on the ground, while hanging out around the gatling gun. Then turn towards the walkway in the distance and use concentration if you have to - the guys there show up pretty late after you kill off the last bunch of guys on the ground - and take them out. Then the guys on top of the house and on the rightmost side of the walkway. After that, the enemies on the ground will respawn around the same area where you last killed them. If you head over there, with the gatling gun and walkway to your left, you can turn right once you hit a wall and follow that around another right, and then right again back towards the walkway, and around that path is where all the last of the ground troops spawn. Don't miss the ammo box in a corner in one of those turns - it's very visible and hard to miss. After that, there's a bunch of guys up on the middle of the walkway. There are also lots of barrels around the level, so remember to use those whenever you have trouble finding someone and need to extend your combo timer. This one will take quite a few tries to pull off.

05: Bull's Head Saloon
Class: Ranger
Score goal: 80,000
A fairly easy and straightforward level, especially following the last one. Just walk down the street, turn left and head into the saloon, while killing everyone in your way. Keep an eye on the saloon balcony and roof for a few of the guys; the rest of them are obviously posted in your path and hard to miss. One little trick is that you can run a bit down the first street before shooting anyone, to force some spawns and give yourself some more time between kills. Remember to refill your ammo by the stage coach you pass, and save as much concentration as you can for the inside of the saloon as you'll need it to find enemies before the timer runs out. Just spam that RB as much as you can in there.

06: Apache Territory
Class: Trapper
Score goal: 120,000
Get ready to get REALLY annoyed by retarded runners, yay! These runners seem to follow a set path and if you show up too soon, they'll run right past you and act confusing as hell! Keep that in mind and rush as hard as you can is really the only strategy here. There are lots of "slow parts" with very few, well-hidden enemies that are pretty much designed to murder your combo, so you need to be constantly sprinting. The hardest part is the tree bridge; I cross it first, by sprinting, then I turn around and kill the guys up on the ledge to extend my combo. In the final room, you can use your shotgun to great effect with the help of concentration and the "devil's shotgun" (no reloads) perk.

07: Grand Valley
Class: Trapper
Score goal: ~175,000
Shotgun rush! That's really all there is to it. Shoot out barrels to save time and ammo and to get some more points, and remember to save your concentration for the three shotgunners. If you enter concentration and do headshots, he'll go down in just a few shots. The "devil's shotgun" perk (4th perk) makes a big difference and helps a lot on this level, so level up that Trapper class!

08: Coffeyville
Class: Ranger
Score goal: 220,000
This is the toughest level to simply survive on, as you're constantly under fire on the rooftop, and then you have to enter the bank and have close-range fights with shotgunners and stuff. Don't worry, though, because it's really not that hard to get 3 stars on! All you need is to fully combo the enemies outside and on the rooftops, and all of the enemies inside the bank don't matter. In order to pull off the combo on the roof, you will need to keep your combo going by shooting barrels. What I would do is shoot any visible, stationary enemies and, while I waited for more enemies to show up, I would aim at a barrel and fire just when the timer ran out. If there were enough enemies in the open at that point, I'd kill them and repeat, otherwise I'd find another barrel and wait. If you get lucky, you can kill the dynamite throwing guys before they can toss one at you, but if not you can just walk to the other side of the roof and keep shooting.

09: Missouri Swamps
Class: Ranger
Score goal: 130,000
Run a lap around the little house you start in, to collect ammo and dynamite, and then just stay up there for the duration of the level. The enemies will first spawn to the left of where you're looking as you start, and then to the right and then the spawns circle the level until they come back to where they first spawned. Just clear out the enemies in each area and once you notice that no more are coming, shoot a barrel and find more enemies in the area to the right of where you were looking. Throw dynamite at shielders and shotgunners if you can, otherwise remember that the revolver is actually better at taking them out than the rifle is (for whatever reason). This can be a tough level, but I actually dropped my combo TWICE and still made 3 stars, so it's pretty forgiving.

10: Guadalupe Canyon
Class: Ranger
Score goal: 400,000
In my opinion, this is the easiest level in the game. Start the level off by running a few laps around the stage coach, without shooting anyone, to force the ammo in the ammo box to spawn. As soon as you fill up, start circling and looking for targets to shoot. Whenever you can't find anyone to shoot, hit concentration and exit it again as soon as you find your target. Repeat 50 times. You don't need to full combo this one; I think the highest combo is 77x and I had a 71x and ended up with a 600k score. Three stars is only 400k, so you could probably get away with as low as a 50x combo.

Great solution. I, like others, preferred the Ranger class as I relied on the rifle throughout the campaign, but the solution's pointers about use of concentration, barrel shooting, and level layouts were very useful.

I found that abusing melee helped immensely in Apache Territory, as that was the one where I came closest to losing my combo from timing-out. It allowed me, as a Ranger, to rush and not waste too much ammo, keeping a full clip for long-range targets. The end room was also a bitch, as the final guys from one wave were often behind cover before the flood of the first guys from the next wave. Be very careful with your concentration here, to find out which cover they're behind, but don't use it to wait for them to come out of cover, that will eat it up quickly.

08: Coffeyville - I finished with a max combo meter of 38 and did not get three stars.

You do not want to use the gatling gun at all. Keep your combo meter up and then drop down as fast as you can to kick in the door. From there it is very easy to get you combo meter to 41 which should net you 3 stars. I finished this level with a 43 combo meter.

You can play through all the levels for the "The Tally" achievement, and then play Guadalupe Canyon to earn fast EXP. Once acquiring all the perks, it make the other levels much easier.

I tried the Guadalupe idea before I made this solution and I didn't think it was all too worthwhile. It's great for the rifle class, but if you're following my suggestions you'll already have it maxed out by, like, level 5. The shotgun and revolver aren't too great at Guadalupe; in that case, the first level (or the mines) are better choices IMO.

And never use any gatling guns, yeah. It's why they're not mentioned in my walkthroughs.

I used the ranger class for every level, the rifle kills with one shot 90% of the time, has a big clip, and the last perk is the instant headshots concentration mode.

Gunslinger class IS the best class by a mile, check the leaderboards, virtually all the top players use gunslinger for every mission

I'm going to have to throw my hat in for Gunslinger being awesome too. Full concentration every 6 kills is really helpful.

Most levels only took me two playthroughs; one to get a feel for the level, and then a second go to get three stars. And a lot of my scores were in the top two or three hundred on the leaderboards.

I did have a bit of trouble with the last mission because all the enemies were so far away, and the revolvers are pretty inaccurate at range. But I hadn't even played as the other classes, so I wasn't about to start now. Even then, it only took me about 4 or 5 tries.

The Gunslinger method for mag-dumping the quick shooter is the best especially when combined with all of his perks. I killed all 75 people in the fourth mission in one combo using the gunslinger and I didn't even have his last two perks (don't go akimbo). Also I'm down voting, not because the solution didn't work for me, it's because of the way you snapped at BogusWeevil for his input. It kinda makes you seem like an ass.

Also, I used the gatling at every opportunity. I had to leave it on the Coffeyville stage once they started chucking dynamite at me, but was able to retain my combo by using concentration.

Sometimes people read the comments for alternate suggestions. Its a fine guide and you shouldnt take it personally or as a request to rewrite your solution. Maybe they should write their own solutions, but that opens them up to being shit all over, right?....I used gunslinger too though.

Great solution. Just wanted to add my two cents.

I three starred all 10 levels with the Ranger class with very little trouble. I much prefer the rifle to the pistol or shotgun and used it pretty much exclusively through the story.

I never used the final Ranger skill (where you lock on to headshots). I used dynamite on the Missouri Swamps level for the shielders. Otherwise I used strictly the rifle.

On Coffeyville, I killed the first two guys on the tower, then used the gatling gun for a bit until dynamite was thrown my way, at which point i hopped off, combo'd the rest of the guys outside, then leisurely dropped inside and finished the level with plenty of points.

I preferred the Rifle throughout the story so I'm sticking with it. I've practiced every mission with each class and the Rifle gets me the best combos even in close quarters missions (where I melee a lot).

I think different peeps have different prefs for this and no class is strictly the best for everyone. The only exception is that the Trapper class is utterly useless for some of the ranged missions. Solution upvoted and thanks for the tips from everyone.

Perhaps one of the greatest solutions I've seen on TA.

On 5, Bull's head Saloon, I found it useful to sprint forward and get the first two kills with my secondary weapon. Made it so I didn't have to reload at such an awkward point later in the level coming up on the first stagecoach.

Ranger is by far the best. Trapper has no use at all. The constant reloading makes the trapper class the worst.

Guadalupe Canyon is definitely not 400,000.

I just got 3 stars with 346,000. Should update the requirement to 343,000 for now since NightmareEX got that and 3 starred it until someone confirms it could possibly be lower.

I appreciate the author's effort and the general tips were helpful, but I completely agree that the Gunslinger class is by far the easiest option. Getting full concentration every six kills combined with the fast reload is very over-powered. Just make sure you always go for headshots at range and don't use akimbo because it is too inaccurate. Pair that with the pretty heavy aim assist and even the canyon mission is a breeze as the Gunslinger. Your solution doesn't make a case against it, you just say you find it useless. I suggest only taking the scores and the general from this solution if you need it, and disregarding the class advice.

Gunslinger is definitely the best class for most levels besides the last one and perhaps level 8.
Took a while to get the last level right but if you maintain your combo until the dynamite vest guys show up you'll get 20-30k per kill. I ended up with 701k points which is way more than needed. Just make sure you don't run out of ammo in the middle of it.

I actually used The gunslinger class for the majority of the levels because once you maxed out the class every time your combo reached a multiple of 6 your concentration bar will refill fully. It made some of the levels really easy to get 3 stars. I suggest people use the gunslinger class to get high scores.

I thought it would be useful to include the scores required for each map, just so folks know what to aim for (besides heads):

1) Lincoln County - 105K
2) Stinking Springs - 140K
3) Gold Rush - 170K
4) Iron Springs - 160K (I lost combo here, but still managed to get 178K)
5) Bull's Head Saloon - 80K
6) Apache Territory - 120K (lost combo, still got it)
7) Grand Valley - ?175K? (I made it through first try with no difficulty as a gunslinger,)
8) Coffeyville - 220K
9) Missouri Swamps - 130K
10) Guadalupe Canyon - 400K

Feel free to add these to your solution.

I've added the scores to the solution, thanks for providing them. That's useful info, I agree!

However, I really don't know what you guys expect me to do about all these comments suggesting the gunslinger class. Are you people really expecting me to dig out a game I completed over 6 months ago, spend like 10 hours leveling up a class I never used and rewrite an entire gigantic solution? This is not my job, don't be absurd. If you want to provide an alternate solution, go right ahead, but I really don't see the purpose of spamming this suggestion over and over. This solution is absolutely not going to change.

The last level is by far the toughest one! The guy that made the guide for this game always made really great guides but I have to agree that Gunslinger is the way to go. So much easier but for the last level it seems that all my friends changed to the ranger. I really struggle with the last level and that is by far the toughest level in the game. The guy that made this guide is so wrong on the regard that the last level is the easiest.

I wont specify levels as they are really straightforward. I have an advice for all of you. Go with Gunslinger class. You may not use revolvers during story gameplay, you might even hate them. What important is... Quickshooter reloads in no time. Quick loader makes possible to shoot one cylinder per enemy and still keep the combo going. Reloading whole cylinder take 1/3 to 1/4 of Ranger and Sixshooter.

In addition running as Gunslinger allows you to pick up first rifle you run through. You can have precise long range weapon, two quickshooters and dynamite with one class.

Steady aim (you can practise is during story, I had like 90% of headshot kills, and learn how to aim fast and true) combined with headshots and concentration mode allowed me to get enough kills in short period of time allowed me to score maximum combo availble on certain level.

You also might want to start arcade mode after finishing story once or even twice. It gives you an advantage of experience and knowledge of the game.

tldr; Quickshooters reload time combined with headshots is the solution.

This would probably work if the pistol wasn't weaker than squirrel piss. I have lost combos more time while shooting than any other time. How a close range head shot takes 3 rounds is beyond me. I've put 5 in center mass and still didn't get the kill.
Not saying this doesn't work; just doesn't work for me, even with 4 perks unlocked.

Good strategy for me. +1. I would add that it's strongly recommended to upgrade Gunslinger class at least at +5, in order to benefit of the full concentration bar every 6 kills. Very useful !

Great solution, the only parts I disagree on is that there is no point in picking up a rifle, you should add that the quickshooter is much stronger without akimbo and I found the quickshooter the strongest weapon in the story as well. The missions are even easier when you keep an eye on your combo and if you have three combo cards left, always locate the second-next target before shooting the very next one. It is also worth mentioning that this game has some pretty heavy aim assist, so make sure you center your guns without ADS-ing and then LT to take full advantage of it, pretty much like most console shooters.

This is the hardest trophy in the whole game. To get the three starts in a mission, you need to get a lot of points in it, and when I say a lot I mean A LOT. The most efficient way to get this trophy is to play a mission a few times and learn the enemy placement. After you know everything, go for the longest combo in the game. You need to combo your way from the beginning till the end of the mission. Do not forget to make use of your surroundings.

Available missions:

  • Lincoln County
  • Stinking Springs
  • Gold Rush
  • Iron Springs
  • Bull's Head Saloon
  • Apache Territory
  • Grand Valley
  • Coffeyville
  • Missouri Swamps
  • Guadalupe Canyon

See here for a Guide on how to get this trophy as painlessly as possible (credit to solstice for this): LINK

You need to get 3 stars on each of the 10 arcade missions. This will not prove easy at first but levelling up your favourite weapon category will hugely benefit you throughout. The gap from 2 star to 3 is large and will require a lot of practice and retries as it all depends on the combo you get. You need to pretty much hold a single combo from start to finish on all missions to attain 3 stars.

  • Lincoln County - 110,000
  • Stinking Springs - 140,000
  • Gold Rush - 170,000
  • Iron Springs - 160,000
  • Bull's Head Saloon - 80,000
  • Apache Territory - 120,000
  • Grand Valley - 160,000
  • Coffeyville - 220,000
  • Missouri Swamps - 130,000
  • Guadalue Canyon - 330,000

The above scores are accurate estimates of the points needed for 3 stars PURELY BASED OFF GLOBAL LEADERBOARDS, just to give you an idea.

Not only are combos not always the answer in x40, but simply going through the entire mission with a continuous combo may also not be enough.

So I completed the second mission with a rifle, typing a combo of x53 and that’s only 2 stars.

More headshots, especially when the combo level is high.

In fact, headshots and combos are not as important as they seem at first glance. You can get 3 stars in any mission without them, you can take them off.

Here are a couple of tactics:

1) You will get the largest number of points if you catch the bonus on time. Each mission has an estimated time, it is different and is written after completing the level. If you complete the level within this time, you will receive a bonus point equal to the percentage of time saved. Those. if you scored a million points, say, the estimated time was 3 minutes and you completed it in 2, then the bonus would be 333,000 points, which is equal to 33% of the estimated time saved. With this tactic, you should blow up barrels, let some enemies through, and, of course, choose the shortest path. In levels where enemies come in waves - just kill everyone as quickly as possible, use dynamite yourself and shoot at the dynamite men's belts. use the hand-to-hand weapon more often (the arcade level with the Indians will teach you this) and the bonus is yours.

2) If you don't count on the time bonus, you can just do huge combos. There are a couple of subtleties here. Headshots are just as important as... DYNAMITE BARRELS and HAND CANDLE! All of the above reduces the number of points. as well as body shots. When you use barrels to blow up enemies, you lose points. Therefore, shoot the barrels only to prolong the combo. Let me explain. At a high level of combo (I compared it somewhere at x32-x35) you will get a thousand or a couple of thousand by blowing up 3-4 opponents with a barrel, if you take a headshot you will get 18,000, if you just hit it then 7,000 - 9,000. Just do the math. Instead of aiming at the heads, it’s better to watch how close your opponents are when you want to hit them.

Here are a couple of tips:

It is better to blow up barrels when you have finished off all the enemies, before starting to move or change position.

It is better to turn on concentration before loading a rifle or two pistols; 1 pistol reloads quickly. Rapid fire - instantly. I’m not saying that when reloading rapid fire you don’t need to turn on concentration. What I mean is that when reloading a rifle or 2 pistols, be sure to include concentration. This is sometimes shown in the tooltips even when loading a level. This greatly simplifies the gameplay.

If the combo is about to disappear (when there is 1 card or 0), shoot at the body of any enemy, in emergency cases, turn on concentration, and, having shot someone and thereby prolonging concentration, start reloading, do not turn off concentration.

The last mission is easier to complete with a rifle.

Forget about the ranger's "executioner" skill (when holding he aims at the heads automatically). This is in a company where this skill in combination with “suppression by numbers” (when for 6 corpses the concentration scale is filled) works with a bang, without it it is 3-4 heads at most and an empty (so necessary for you in the arcade as insurance) concentration scale.

- correction: the "executioner" skill can be used depending on the situation. That is, for example, in the last mission where the enemies are like ducks in a shooting gallery, I knock down more headshots than with this skill, but at the beginning of the mission with the Indians where they run at you, I don’t have time to kill everyone while moving, but with the executioner skill I have time. I also used it in a mission with a bank, where you start on the roof. I used it there at the beginning. Nowhere else.

The easiest way to complete all missions except the last one is as a shooter with the unlocked “suppression by numbers” skill. With an ideal layout, you can stay focused all the time. This makes the game slower and many times easier. Don't forget to turn off concentration manually when you have a lot of cards on the combo counter.

It's not just the barrels that extend combos. Also pumpkins, bottles and other items for which you get +5 experience.

x40 is not always enough, so if you have the opportunity to send a lead hello to the enemy, head on and shoot, there will be more points

The main thing is to upgrade a fast shooter with two pistols to the maximum, and then everything becomes much easier. and yes, the main success is continuous combos, headshots don’t matter
