How to unlock the Level 7 Completed on Hard achievement in Crypt of the Serpent King - Definitive Guide

by level 7, i found killing the enemies pointless as the xp given is useless due to the game ending right after, as well as picking up gold for the same reasons. throughout the game up until this point, you should have purchased the halbert, the sword, and the bow (26000 gold total)

small notes on the levels leading up to level 7

the halbert is a great weapon to buy after level 1, due to large range, high damage, and low price. attack speed is normal compared to other weapons as well. it makes the game much easier until you purchase the sword.

Daeryoon said:

Definitely buy the halberd as soon as possible. You can reach the enemies from the middle platform with this weapon without them having a chance to hit you at all. Enemies can't jump and will usually wait on the other side of the jump. You can just move closer until the circle turns red, then get a free hit on them. They will move around and come back, usually close enough to be hit again.

Works well for all levels except 2 since it has no jump over pits to the key platforms, just the fire traps. Once you have the halberd, upgrade agility over everything. Then strength. And lastly endurance. Happy grinding!

which is a very good tactic to use if you are struggling to finish this game.

level 2 i recommend avoiding the enemies all together if possible. 20 damage hits for 12 xp isnt worth it. also, the boss is rather frustrating on this level, being in a small space with a rather large attack swing. the key is to keep him on the X on the metal grates on the floor. after every swing he makes he takes a step forward, so this is when you knock him back a step with a careful hit or two. otherwise he may corner you and swipe your health bar down.
level 2 was the only level that gave me a headache.

I do also have a tip regarding the goblins of Level 2. While they seem rather frustrating (and they are) to fight, I found that if you move backwards away from them just as they're about to swing, then quickly attack while moving towards them again, you'll be able to get a hit in while dodging their own quick attack. It does take some practicing, but that extra experience can really boost you by the time you get to the soldiers in Level 5 (where their speed is just as frustrating).

so its really up to you. i preferred skipping the enemies of level 2 and grinding out kills in the level with the orcs, as it was easier to do so. but you are also able to kill enemies on level 2 if you're able to.

however i have been reading remarks made from others and apparently jumping the pits on level 4 is hard for some, so a small tip i can offer is to either walk, and when you see the edge of the floor disappear from camera view (assuming you're looking strait ahead) jump for it. i always made it by not thinking too much about the jump and just..jumping the gap. if you're scared to make the jump, walk right up to the edge, looking down at the spikes, then jump. no running to build up speed required, as you move at the same speed regardless.

as for level 7, the weapons i recommend having are the sword and the bow. the enemies are very skinny and by moving around them left or right, you can simply dodge them. to open a door up, walk up to it holding cn_X and as soon as it starts opening get away from it, as there's a high chance a snake is behind you and staying there will take chunks out of your health bar. the enemies are easily avoided, but it may take a few tries to get used to their patterns.

open all the chests using the above method as well, double back for arrows. i dont know what the max is, but by the time the boss fight rolled around i had 50 arrows on me.

for the boss fight itself, i highly recommend the bow using the arrows i had you gather. the serpent king swipes rather quickly, and by moving backwards in a large, circular motion around the room and taking shots at him, you reduce the chance of getting hit. i finished the fight with 100 hp.

if you are unable to obtain the bow, whether you forgot to buy it or you never acquired enough gold, PhatDaemian says that to kill the final boss you need to deal 16 blows with the sword, when strength and agility are maxed out.

overall, the last level isn't too challenging. avoid the enemies to avoid getting damaged for the fight, and pick up the arrows and keys.

if you got this level done you probably 100%ed this title so congrats dance

if there are any questions or ways to improve this solution let me know in the comments below. :)

I was unable to acquire the bow, I must have missed a few chests somewhere though I could have sworn I got them all. So, equipped with the sword only, str and agi maxed and end at 7 I got to the final boss and hit him 16 times before he killed me. The very next attempt I hit him 16 times and he died. Very annoying learning the timing of how to kill him with the sword but if you are in the same situation I was, and not wanting to go back to redo the more annoying 2nd level to try and get enough gold for the bow, then it is right around 16 dodges/hits to kill this final boss.

This isnt even hard. I dont get why there are these detailed guides. An enemy walks up to u... you back up let it swipe then hit it twice back up let it swipe again and kill it. Its the same throughout the entire game.

well, clearly you needed help if you came to this guide. This is to give small tips and tricks to people who might be stuck in this rather annoying game.

I didn't need help I curiously looked as to why there are guides when the entire game is the same. No guide needed.

You can hit enemies from the middle platform no matter what weapon you have, you don't need the halberd to do that. Also I strongly recommend NOT skipping enemies. They often follow you, and it's easy for them to sneak up behind you if you pause. Those goblins are tricky and I definitely understand the argument for skipping them. But the timing practice you get from fighting them is very valuable.

Level 7 was easy once I realized I didn’t need to fight the snakes and could just run away from them, lure them to the pits, jump there then go around them. Just run around and get the keys, avoid opening doors you don’t need to, and the boss is super easy with a circular flanking movement. He swipes then you swing. EZ PZ

In level seven I noticed the best method for the boss was to keep walking in a circle and spamming the attack button. He can't get you if you keep moving. You might miss a few times but as long as you keep moving you'll beat them no problem.

You can do circle strafe while attacking and they'll miss you 95% of the time. Doesn't seem to work for levels 1 & 2 tho.

Regarding Level 4's pits... I think the dev must have patched things to make that jump simpler. The last time I played the game one month ago, I was having trouble making those jumps consistently. Now, today, I just picked the game up to finish it off, and realized (by the time I finished the level) that I hadn't missed a single jump.

I know I'm late to the party but had some advice i found useful. I used the mace and not the sword when doing this. I span him in circles let him swipe twice then, bait and whack. Mace leaves less room for error as it is a lot faster to use than a sword. i got this first try with a mace after 10 tries with a sword. Also only took about 7 hits where as i got up to 11 hits with a sword without him dying. Hope this helps someone as i would have loved to have known this 4 hours ago aha

I used the lava platforms to kill all snakes in Level 7 Hard.

I've tried the "get crushed by the gate glitch" on several levels, but I've never got it to work.

I used a wide constant circle strafe technique on the final boss by holding the Left analog stick in place and tapping the Right analog stick to aim arrows with the reticle while constantly firing and spinning.

I actually got hit once by the boss despite constantly spinning when I got caught in an archway on the wall. I also had to pause for 10-20 seconds twice for a breather because I was getting dizzy, lol.

It actually took less hits with the upgraded Longbow to kill the boss then I expected, maybe 10-12 successful hits, although I probably missed 50% of the shots I took.

Weirdly, I noticed some new performance issues on Level 7 Hard that I don't remember on the same Level 7 Easy or Medium.

The game started slowing down after opening doors and the slowdown persisted long after the animation stopped. It didn't impact jumping or the final boss battle. I've seen others mention the slowdown before.

It's odd this would become an issue only in the final Hard level playthrough, and really is unacceptable in such a basic game as this graphically.

Here is the technique I used:

Attributes: Agility to 10, then Strength to 10, then everything else to Endurance.

I found that enemies could be defeated with a few quick strikes, or stepping in for a hit and stepping back out of range. If you find you are taking a few hits as you are going, I would suggest bumping up Endurance along with Strength. Agility for the movement speed and attack speed I think is too valuable to not get as soon as possible.

*Side note - It does seem that enemies respawn, so there is a chance that you could farm to get more exp. I found this not necessary.*

Weapons : Hatchet -> Mace -> Sword -> Long Bow

Make sure to grab all chests as you are going through the levels. The sooner you can get the weapons, the easier it will be. I used the Hatchet for only the first level, the Mace for the next two levels, and then the sword on level 4. I continued to get all the chests until I had the 18,000 for the Long Bow. I didn't use it very often, but it can come in handy if you have multiple enemies engaged with you at one time.

Good Luck and take your time. Rushing through doesn't give you much of an advantage. Always look behind you when getting a chest...got jumped far too many times. Also, if you are having trouble with Level 4 and the jumps, BAMMphil's solution worked well for me.

I know it may seem lazy that I'm only providing one achievement description for the entire game, but it really is this simple (and I basically went over everything already in the roadmap). You need to beat the game on each of the three difficulties: Casual, Normal, and Hardcore. Hardcore unlocks when you beat Normal, so just do them in order to get a feel for the game mechanics and the combat.

Start the game on Casual and complete all seven floors by finding the required number of keys, unlocking the final door with the boss inside, and killing it. You will then start the next floor and repeat this process. Once you complete all 21 floors (7 floors per difficulty), you will have all 1000 this game has to offer. The only time I had any issues was on floor two with the goblin enemy (for some reason his attacks were the hardest to time), and on floor four trying to jump and get the keys (the island is shaped weird and I fell in the lava a few times).

When you level up your character, focus on agility first. Since the game's combat is so simple, the extra speed and jump distance will help with the platforms on level four of the dungeon. Endurance only mitigates incoming damage, so if you've got the combat timing down, that is irrelevant. Strength will help kill enemies a bit faster, but one extra hit per enemy isn't going to add much time to your completion either. Throw just about everything into agility until the fourth floor, then start adding strength a bit.

The combat tips and distinctions of each difficulty in the roadmap will help you easily master this game and complete it quickly. Good luck!
