How to unlock the Level 3 Completed on Hard achievement in Crypt of the Serpent King - Definitive Guide

I opted to lure all orcs back to the spikepits to fight them across the gap

Pros
- got to the boss with 100 HP
- managed to get all the gold in chests in the level, about 4000 coins (I barely collected any gold in Level 2 since I ran away from all the goblins and only collected keys)
- turning the reticle on helps you reach across the gap to kill enemies when it turns red

Cons
- time consuming, level took 36 mins to clear
- since I bought the mace for Level 2 and didn't collect any gold running from goblins, I couldn't afford thr Halberd entering Level 3. The mace has a better reach than the base Hatchet, but I still struggled to reach the orcs most of the time
- this strategy greatly increases the number of times you have to jump across the spikes. The jumping is forgiving, but I still died twice on two different occasions.
- you sometimes have to kite the orcs backtracking down several hallways to return to a spikepit
- the orcs need to be right on the edge to hit them across the gap. I often had to creep right to the edge looking down with the Right analog stick to reach them with my mace. Often times, they wouldn't chase me all the way to the edge of the spikes, so I would have to jump over and back again multiple times to reactivate them to chase me
- I did lose some XP when the orcs killed themselves by falling into the spikes after one of my attacks. Interestingly, I used the same strategy on Level 1 against the Kobold rats, and 50% of them killed themselves. On this level, I killed 19 and 5 killed themselves, so I still accumulated around 80% of the possible XP.

I found the final boss challenging. Some of my previous strategies did not work. I couldn't attack fast enough with the "backup and counterattack" strategy because he attacks again too quickly. My stats are only (Strength/Endurance/Agility) 1/1/3, since I lost 50% of Level 1 XP to rats dying in lava and didn't kill any goblins in Level 2. I also only could afford to equip the mace.

I then tried the "constantly hold the Left analog stick in a fixed position to constantly spin and then counterattack". I similarly didn't find this tactic successful. The boss closed the gap too quickly whenever I stopped the spin and I couldn't get clean hits after his attacks.

In the end, I won by the skin of my teeth with 25 HP left by letting the boss get close face-to-face and then constantly circling him with a very tight strafe pretty much constantly touching him. He pretty much attacks constantly, though I wouldn't get hit unless I stopped to attack. I would wait for him to take 3 consecutive swings, then tried to attack his side while still in the tight spin, though I never really got his back. I still did get hit a few times, but after around 8-12 blows, he finally went down.

I circle strafed the boss while mashing attack and his attacks always missed me.

As there is no food on hardcore you need to save your health for the boss.

I recommend simply running past all enemies and focus only on collect the keys. The reach of the halberd is really helpful for the boss fights. I would also recommend avoiding chests. The chests in later levels contain much more loot.

When you reach the boss area make sure you are not followed before entering. Approach the boss and let him swing at you so you know his movements, but the halberd allows you to dispatch all the bosses at a safe distance.
