How to unlock the Abysmal Covenant achievement in DARK SOULS II - Definitive Guide

To unlock the "Abysmal Covenant" achievement, you must discover the "Pilgrims of Dark" Covenant.
In order to do so, you have to speak to Darkdiver Grandahl in his 3 locations in no particular order.

Here are his locations:

Shaded Ruins - Before taking a left to head to the fog door path. Keep going forward into the tall grass with the 3 trees. There is a trap hole you need to fall down where you will find Darkdiver Grandahl.

Black Gulch - There are two worms that come out of the wall. You need to fall down onto a ledge in between the two holes in the walls. You will find a locked door. If you keep going further down, you will find
that will drop the key to the door. Take the cage elevator back up, drop down and open the door to find Darkdiver Grandahl.

Drangelic Castle - After finding the first bonfire in the castle. You will be in a room with six doors and a lot of stone soldiers. Killing them near the doors will open it. The door to the far left has a hole you need to fall into. You will find a bonfire and if you keep going you will find Darkdiver Grandahl.

After talking to him all 3 times. You should be able to join the covenant and gain the achievement! smile

He's dead on mime, if i use a bonfire ascetic in the area he died, will he come back?? :(

Hmm, I'm not sure. I think it would be best to join in NG+.

In order to join this covenant you'll have to speak with Darkdiver Grandahl at 3 locations throughout the game. Below are where you will meet him:

1. From the Shaded Ruins bonfire in the Shaded Woods head out to where you see the enemies and go all the way to the right past the 2 towers and the boss pathway into an area where there is some long grass. You'll fall down onto the dark shrine and Darkdiver will be there.
2. In the Black Gulch when you get the Forgotten Key from beating the giants (part of the story) head back up to the top part of the gulch and then head to where the 2 worm creatures come out of the wall. There is a platform you can fall down onto in between the 2 worms, then find the another platform below it and use the Forgotten Key to gain access to Darkdiver.
3. The final location is under Drangleic Castle. When you reach the King's Gate bonfire, the open room where the Sentinels attack you get the door on the left closest to the golem to open. Enter that room and you will fall down to get the Forgotten Chamber bonfire. Darkdiver is right there.

PLEASE NOTE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO JOIN A COVENANT TO GET THE ACHIEVEMENT – JUST HAVE THE OPTION TO: You need to talk to Darkdiver Grandahl in three different locations to join the Pilgrims of Dark. They can be done in any order. After the third one he will let you join. He will give you the Abyss Seal and you can then offer an Effigy to open a portal (in each area you found him) leading to the Dark Chasm of Old. You need to get Rank 3 in this covenant for a spell, so offer an Effigy at each place you found him to open a portal, you then have to defeat the phantoms in each area and light the beacon (take Flame Butterflys to light your torch) before falling into the mist at the end. After clearing the third area you will not be returned straight away but instead have to face the Darklurker boss. Be warned that if you die you have to offer ANOTHER effigy to redo the area.

Shaded Ruins - To the right of the ramp that leads up to the scorpion boss you will find a hidden wooden floor to fall through by some trees. He is at the bottom.

Black Gulch - Behind the Forgotten Key Door. Accessed via a hidden ledge near the pools with burrowing worms and hand monsters. Dropping down two levels has a large arch door that is locked. The next ledge down has a tunnel leading to a large room with two faceless giants. Killing both giants yields a Forgotten Key and Soul of a Giant. This key can be used on the previously found door to access a small chamber containing Grandahl.

Drangleic Castle - Behind the Soul-Activated door in the far left of the corner of the large room adjoining the King's Gate Bonfire. The room has two torch bearing giant statues at the end, and a Ruin guardian behind each door. You will need to drop through the floor in the required room to find him.

Perhaps the most difficult covenant to find. In order to join it, you need to find and talk to the desired NPC in 3 different places. He looks like a grandfather sitting in a chair. You can find it here:

1) Location Dark Forest - Dark Ruins. A cave will be visible to the right of the fire. To get there, you need to go upstairs, kill the lions and go a little further to the wall (without turning onto the path to the boss). There is a hole in the grass near one of the trees, falling through which will take you to a small tier of the cave next to the desired NPC.

2) Location Drangleic Castle - Royal Gate. In a room with 6 doors and animated statues, you need to go into the far left door. In order for the doors to open, you need to kill the mobs next to them, then their souls will activate the mechanism. Behind this door there will be a guard similar to the boss Ruin Guard from the Forgotten Fortress. Kill him and go into the room. The floor will collapse under you and you will find yourself in a cave. Go a little further and you will find a fire, and a little further along the required NPC.

3) Location Black Cleft halfway to the Rotting boss. Where huge worms crawl out of the walls, you can jump down onto a small ledge (carefully inspect with a torch before jumping). There will be a huge stone door, but it is locked. Look carefully with the torch near the edge of the ledge - you will see another ledge below. Jump there. Walking along the path you will come out into a vast cave with 2 giant mobs. Giants are quite strong opponents - each of them wields 2 two-handed maces that ignore block. The best option would be to roll behind your back. After killing both giants you will receive their soul and key. There are 2 more exits from this cave, besides the one you came through, one leads to a chest with a ring, the other to an elevator that will take you up. Jump down to the 1st ledge with the door again and open it. The NPC we need will be waiting for you there.

After the 3rd conversation, he will agree to accept you into the covenant and you will receive a trophy. He will also give you a ring that increases the attacking power of damage spells, but takes away health, and will allow you to use his portals to hidden locations of the Dark Abyss. From him you can buy various spells, several human figures and embers of hostility. He accepts human figurines as offerings to the covenant.

Regarding the two giants, you can run through the cave and get into a small room with a chest, where the giants cannot climb. And from there you can poison them with gases, cast miracles, shoot arrows - in general, kill them in an unfair battle. And it’s worth killing them, because their soul will help you in the battle with King Vendrick.

You don’t have to run into the cave, but lure them out by making short attacks and going back to the cliff, and so on several times... They don’t go to the cliff.

Human figures are needed to open portals of the Dark Abyss of the Past. After passing the location, you should talk to him to increase loyalty to the covenant
