How to unlock the A terrifying figure... achievement in Darkest Dungeon - Definitive Guide
You can encounter the Shambler one of two ways: randomly finding a Shambler's altar curio and using a torch on it or running around on 0 light and he will find you randomly in a hallway. The odds of spawning him at 0 light are very rare on apprentice(1%) and increase to 8% on veteran and 12% on champion. Some people create Shambler hunting parties and bring trinkets specifically for low light combat. Be warned as this is a tough battle so wait until you've either completed the mission or have a campfire at your disposal to recuperate/buff up otherwise you may defeat the Shambler but have to abandon the mission.
The fight takes place in the darkness(0 light) and you cannot increase it with torches/skills. This increases stress received by 40%, monster ACC 12.5%, DMG 25%, and crit by 5%, these values slightly worse on Stygian difficulty.
He will shuffle your party from the onset so preshuffle them yourself, but bring heroes with mobility and equip skills with movement/attacks from a variety of places. The Shambler will cast either Bleed or Blight on your entire party and also summon 2 tentacles. If you kill one or both of the tentacles he will frequently try to resummon them, but if both are alive he will cast a stress attack and shuffle the party. The tentacles have a weak attack initially but will buff themselves with +50% DMG and +25% PROT every turn, stacking up to 3 times. The Shambler has 33% PROT, is Eldritch, and has one action per turn.
Tips:
-Bring holy waters and use on the first round.
-Have low stress/unafflicted heroes
-Grave Robber's 'Pick to the Face' and Shieldbreaker's 'Pierce' are key skills
-Riposte attacks are helpful since it will trigger every turn (Highwayman and Man-at-Arms)
Since hero equipment and skills scale linearly if you're having difficulties killing him the Veteran difficulty is the sweet spot. It only has 6% more accuracy and 9% more dodge compared to the Apprentice difficulty and heroes in level 4 armor/skills will have a slight stat advantage.
For someone looking to complete the game you'll have to kill him 5 times to get all of the droppable Ancestor's trinkets (technically 4 as you can get one from a DD boss). The Ancestor's Scroll is arguably the best trinket in the game so you'll want to get your hands on it sooner rather than later. The Tentacle Idol and Map are also incredibly valuable in the early game.
