How to unlock the Sentimental relics from our forefathers... achievement in Darkest Dungeon - Definitive Guide

There are 14 Ancestor Trinkets in the game. Nine of the trinkets are given as rewards for completing a dungeon mission, so far I have only ever had them offered to me as a reward for completing Lv.5 Long missions. These can be quite difficult and I find aiming for 90% room clears is much more manageable than doing 100% of room battles.

These trinkets are -

Ancestor's Coat
Ancestor's Handkercheif
Ancestor's Lantern
Ancestor's Mustache Cream
Ancestor's Musket Ball
Ancestor's Pen
Ancestor's Pistol
Ancestor's Portrait
Ancestor's Signet Ring

The other five trinkets are obtained by defeating a mini-boss enemy called The Shambler.

Ancestor's Scroll
Ancestor's Tentacle Idol
Ancestor's Map
Ancestor's Candle
Ancestor's Bottle

The Shambler can be encountered by location a Shambler Alter curio piece which randomly spawns in any of the games dungeons. To fight the Shambler you need to use a torch on the altar and the fight will begin immediately.

If you are specifically going hunting for The Shambler I would recommend taking a party with the ability to reach both the front and back ranks with ease, I personally find Man-at-Arms, Bounty Hunter, Occultist & Arbalest to be a great combination for this as all of them can hit The Shambler wherever it sits. An alternative party would be Man-at-Arms, Abomination, Jester/Plague Doctor and an Occultist.

Depending on the dungeon difficulty The Shambler will have 77/116/158HP. During the fight it will summon two minions to fight with it that can deal high amounts of stress damage while The Shambler can cause heavy bleed or blight on your party so the relevant healing items should be brought along.

If you use the first party build just focus on raw damage. Man-at-Arms should refresh his Riposte status as soon as it wears off and your Arbalest should alternate between marking The Shambler and attacking to get the most damage out of your Bounty Hunter while your Occultist heals as needed.

If you take the second party you want to use Man-at-Arms the exact same way and have your Abomination in it's transformed state using either Rake to deal with the minions or hit both a minion and the boss if possible. Plague Doctor/Jester should focus on stacking bleed and blight as much as possible as Shambler has reasonably low resistances to both (85% at the highest level) the Plague Doctor could also try stunning it if you need some breathing room and the Jester can buff your party/heal stress if needed.

Once The Shambler and it's minions are defeated you will be given one of the five possible item trinkets. You can only have one of each so you will never get a duplicate and once all five have been obtained you won't need to fight it any more.

Once all 14 items are in your inventory you will unlock the achievement.

CONFIRMED - Ancestor's Vintage is not required. Purposefully avoided getting this during my playthrough and the achievement popped once I had all 14 original items.

EDIT: The Shambler also has a chance to spawn in any area if you walk around with your torchlight at 0 (why you would though I don't know, I always keep mine at 75+).

You are also guaranteed to get one of the Ancestor items from the Shuffling Horror boss that you face on your first trip into the Darkest Dungeon so if you want you can limit your Shambler fights to four instead of five. - Credit to Moldy Tacos5000

Good luck.

I just want to add the boss from the first Darkest Dungeon also drops an ancestral trinket so you only have to kill 4 shamblers, assuming you're doing a full playthrough.

Shamblers also have a very small chance to spawn inside a dungeon hallway when torchlight is at 0, so save those dark/moon items and go shambler hunting!

Are you able to sell these and still obtain the achievement or do you need them all in the inventory? I really don’t want the Ancestor’s Bottle but do you want the gold.

Sorry, it's been a very long time since I got this done so I don't remember. Hopefully another commenter can confirm/refute this or you could make a forum post to ask. Good luck.

You can do this at least on Normal difficulty. Not sure about the easiest.

I'm only missing the musketeers ball. Is this in the base game or is it in the musketeer dlc?

Musketeer is DLC

The musketeer is a DLC character, but as the solution states the Ancestor's trinket is named "musket ball" and has nothing to do with the DLC.

I got all my shit back

I'm also only missing one ancestral now - the musket ball. I am not seeing a dungeon that has it though, I'm also not seeing a couple of "bosses" I need to kill off as well. Will they appear eventually if I keep doing dungeons?

8-4-2022. You can get this easier while doing Vvulf event. In this dungeon there are 3 ancestors chest (one in the very left, other in the right room and last one in the middle one after defeating Vvulf) that can reward you with an ancestor trinket. If the trinket didn’t drop in the chest just dashboard, close the game and relog until it drops. If you do this with every 3 chest you will finish the event with 3 ancestors trinkets. As it’s said, you can get another one in the Darkest Dungeon, and if you are lucky you can get more trinkets just as a reward for defeating enemies ( I got the ancestors pen right after killing 4 spiders in a Lvl 5 short dungeon).

Glitched! For me, the Caretaker trophy popped when I collected all trinkets on VITA! Sentimental relics from our forefathers... did NOT pop on VITA, ever.

Trinkets are pieces of equipment you can find in dungeons. Ancestor's trinkets are extremely rare, have a red name (not all reds are ancestor’s) and are dropped in long Champion dungeons.
There are 14 Ancestor’s trinkets,
8 of the Ancestor’s trinkets can be found in any dungeons
1 ( Ancestor's Musket Ball ) can only be found in the Weald region/dungeon.
5 of the Ancestor’s trinkets are dropped by the Shambler, see A terrifying figure emerged from the darkness... details on how to summon and slay the shambler.

Ancestor’s trinkets;

  1. Ancestor's Pen
  2. Ancestor's Lantern
  3. Ancestor's Pistol
  4. Ancestor's Signet Ring
  5. Ancestor's Coat
  6. Ancestor's Portrait
  7. Ancestor's Handkerchief
  8. Ancestor's Moustache Cream
  9. Ancestor's Map (dropped by Shambler)
  10. Ancestor's Bottle (dropped by Shambler)
  11. Ancestor's Scroll (dropped by Shambler)
  12. Ancestor's Tentacle Idol (dropped by Shambler)
  13. Ancestor's Candle (dropped by Shambler)
  14. Ancestor's Musket Ball (can only be found in the Weald region/dungeon)Ancestor's Musket Ball

It is worth adding that five trinkets (family trophies) will drop only in battles with the Darkman : a family scroll, an idol with tentacles, a family card, a candle, a bottle. The rest can be obtained as a reward in level 5 dungeons, and if you didn’t get something in the first or second Darkest dungeons from family bags.

If you have problems finding altars to summon the Darkman: put out the torch and go through any dungeon (except the vampire one from the DLC). When the torch is extinguished, there is a chance (1% in green, 8% in yellow and 12% in red dungeons) that the Darkman will emerge somewhere in the corridor. In this case, the meeting with him occurs without placing a torch on the altar, but simply as a regular meeting with a collector or ordinary mobs, for example.
!If someone in your party dies and you re-enter the game to restart the battle from the very beginning, then instead of the Darkman there will be ordinary mobs with a probability of 99%, 92% and 88% depending on the level of the dungeon, so it’s better not to die .

When playing in the later stages of the game, the event boss Shrieker (raven) sometimes appears. If you don't go fight him, he can steal 8 trinkets from your inventory, which may include heirlooms that we collect so diligently. If this happens, then by fighting him next time you can get them back, but it’s better not to risk it and fight him right away. There is no dungeon on this quest, you will be thrown straight into battle, there is no point in beating the boss, because... he will fly away after 4 or 5 rounds. It's better to spend your energy on surviving in battle. I read that if you manage to kill him, there will be no rewards for it, so you don’t have to try.

before farming this trophy, check your chest when you are in the estate, press the button , so that your wallet is not overfilled, otherwise it will be like mine - I caught the Darkman, killed, took the reward, completed the necessary tasks for family heirlooms, and in the chest there is a euphoric “0”. Be careful. If your things accumulate in 3 pieces. identical, immediately for sale.
