How to unlock the Nail Biter achievement in Defense Grid: The Awakening - Definitive Guide
This achievement might sound tough, but it's really simple. Below is a video i put together show you how to get it in under 5 minutes.
Start a game of Poison Core on the Out Of Fuel map.
At the top area of the map build 3, lvl 2 Guns and 1 lvl 3 in the placements shown. The at the bottom, build another lvl 3 Gun as show in the video.
Remember to hold the RB Button to speed everything up.

final wave has two crashers. Eliminate others but spare these bosses' lives by selling weapon towers. I recommend building some temporal towers on platforms near exit for pure convenience.
When crashers are pinned by temporal towers near exit, then time your orbital strike, exactly as soon as a crasher goes in the cave. I had to try this 3 times.

This worked like a charm, pretty close.
I didn't have a Temporal tower at the end though. I had all my towers at the beginning (one Inferno on the corner nearest the Core, a couple Guns along the path leading to the entrance, and a couple Missiles at a couple spots along the flight path -- later adding three more Guns and a Temporal on the start path to help slow down Rumblers -- Guns and Inferno up to Level 3, Missiles and Temporal at Level 2).
Once all the enemies were destroyed except the Crashers, I let my towers take the first Crasher out (they will concentrate fire on one until it is dead or out of range), selling my Guns & Inferno towers as that first Crasher got out of range. When the first Crasher fell, I sold the remaining towers, keeping two Level 2 Missile towers (there was one final wave of fliers left).
So all that remained on the screen were a couple now-useless Missile towers, and one Crasher carrying the poison core. As it entered the cave, I got ready to fire. I actually was too close and wasted time repositioning, but it worked out in my favor. I started charging up to fire just as the Crasher fully disappeared off the screen (camera was zoomed out at full view). I was afraid it would be too late, but a second later, the poison core floated out of the cave, and the victory music started.
Got it on the first try.

Thanks. This worked like a charm. Once I cleared all the smaller enemies and all that was left were the 2 bosses I sold the three gun towers at the top, left the temporal tower, waited for the both bosses (1 with the core) and got them near the exit, lined up the orbital laser and got both bosses with it. Got it in my first try too.

It does take some experimenting and timing (and a little luck) but you should be able to get this on one of the later maps using the Orbital Laser and plenty of Temporal towers.
Choose a map which has a Boss as the last enemy to make sure he can get through your towers where smaller/weaker creatures would not. Also let all but one of your cores to be taken only in the second half of the waves, so you don't loose precious resources because of the lack of cores on your base.

I got this while playing with the following settings:
Map: Flight Plan
Mode: Poison Core
Focus on on gun towers near the top/middle, and upgrade them when possible. Put a missile tower in the middle, and upgrade that to at least level 2. A temporal tower in the middle (again, upgrade when possible), and one near the exit.
The last level has two crashers, wipe out everything but those and let one pick up the core. Sell all towers (except the temporal tower near the exit) so the crasher with the core does not get killed. When it is just entering the cave (exit), use the orbital laser.

This can easily be done on "Out of Fuel" on the Poison Core Challenge. Here's the tower set-up: near the crashed ship there are 6 tiles - you want three guns up top, two on level 3, on the bottom a level 2 temporal in the middle and two level 1 guns, and down at the bottom circle place one level 1 meteor tower. Now kill everything until the last wave. Once the last shielded ones come out, sell all your towers except the meteor tower. If the core carrier is about to die, sell the meteor tower and right when it's about to exit the level, build a level 1 gun tower by the exit. You should get the achievement, if you killed the core carrier at the right time.
