How to unlock the Shoot to Skill achievement in Defiance Free to Play - Definitive Guide

To max out a particular weapon skill, you must continue to use weapons of that type, doing damage with them, until you reach level 20 in that weapon type. This sounds simple, but a weapon will 'max out' its own individual exp, at which point it will stop giving you credit toward that weapon type's skill.

For example, my assault rifle I'm currently using will max out its own individual 'experience' bar once I have done 802,500 total damage with it. Once that happens, it will no longer give me credit toward the Assault Rifles skill. You can see this exp bar easiest if you hit Start and select the weapon to change what weapon is in that slot. Look on the right of the screen and just below the spot for the weapon's mods, you will see its progress bar. Once it maxes out (802,500/802,500 in this instance), change to a different weapon of that type to keep working on your skill.

IMPORTANT: Damage done at Arkfalls usually DOES NOT USUALLY COUNT. This may be a glitch and maybe it's just happening to me. More confirmation from others would be appreciated. I have checked my weapon's exp bar both before and after major and minor arkfalls and it has not moved at all in either. Some people have recorded it counts for certain mobs at certain arkfalls but not across the board.

A great place to level weapons is San Quentin. Just rush through and disable all generators and head to the final area. Use the power weapon rockets to clear all the enemies and spawn the Hulker. Hide behind boxes from him and damage him with the weapon of your choice until Ego says "He's not going to stop!". At that point let him kill you and hold A to extract. It will respawn you right at the Hulker and his health will be full. Rinse and repeat to max out a weapon.

It doesn't have anything to do with the weapon's exp being maxed. Some weapons you can add mod slots to, some you can't. The option to add a mod slot will either be there or it won't on the screen where you put mods on a weapon. I'm currently adding a mod slot to a blue assault rifle I have that has its exp maxed out to see if it resets it. If so, I'll add this to the solution.

Adding a mod slot to a weapon did not reset its exp bar for me. What you experienced was likely a glitch.

As for instances, I did over a million damage in Soleptor Excavation with my AR. It really depends on weapon type (toxic/fire/electric/etc) and enemy type/what resistances it has as to how much damage you do.

I just wish I had known about the weapons maxxing. I sat at 5 in my AR skill for two days because I never changed weapons lol. I would be done by now if I had. #facepalm

Confirmed that damage does not count during major arkfalls. I realize it's damage and not EXP that upgrade the guns...but during arkfalls no EXP is gained from killing enemies either. So I believe those go hand in hand.

Exactly. You have to have the damage your weapon does "count" on its exp bar in order to gain skill with that weapon type. Even though you're doing damage in an arkfall, your weapon's exp bar doesn't move at all, so you're not gaining any skill in that weapon type. I'm not doing arkfalls at all anymore unless this is fixed, or I hit 20 skill with all weapons, whichever comes first lol.

That seems silly to never do an Arkfall again until they patch something that might not be a glitch or until you get skill level 20 in all weapons.

Eh, the loot from the arkfalls isn't worth the time investment at this point. I've done like 25 arkfalls and even now that you're getting weapons from them, the weapons aren't any better than I can get other places. I'm just about using my time efficiently.

I only received XP when I was shooting the Matron. I received no XP when shooting other hellbugs or when doing other hellbug arkfalls (like I didn't receive any XP as I shot the hellion/symbiote).

Also, I just did a 99er minor arkfall. I got XP when I shot 99ers around the crystal, but shooting the crystal yielded no XP. It is very strange.

the matron gives exp upon death, between 2500 and 10000 depending on damage done(or so it seems), so going back to the original theory that exp goes hand in hand with the skill is definitely plausible

Just buy the "crap" EMC assault rifle that does 220. That is plenty damage to fight everything just fine and it pumps out bullets pretty fast. I have like 5 of them in my inventory and have leveled something like 8 or 9.

Yeah definately. The last time I did Scrapworks co-op I did 1.8 MILLION damage. That means I coulda maxed out more than two full weapons. Granted I was using a high DPS weapon (assault rifle), so your results will be lower with things like infectors (esp since the nerf), BMGs, detonators, etc. But it's still worth it, especially since damage at major arkfalls still mostly doesn't count with a few random exceptions.

Just a heads up with the latest patch you can now reset your weapons Xp throught the modification tab (very expensive though). Did it on my sniper and it cost me 55,000 in materials so the green currency. +1

My weapons cost in excess of 200,000 ark salvage to reset. It's cost prohibitive at higher levels lol, but I guess something is better than nothing. /shrug

Acrually you can use an already masterd weapon anywhere, PvE or PvP, now and keep gaining weapon exp. I just havent updated the solution because its so old and most people still playing eithwr have this done or already know about it. Still... I will update it when I can.

No you don't have to keep any guns. Every shot you fire with any gun goes toward the exp for that weapon type whether you sell them before or after they're maxed or any other time.

Thanks for the info, although i'm disappointed! I reached lvl 10 with my AR and hoped it would pop, but now you've laid the bad news on me with lvl 20 lol.
Still, the hardest part is finding another decent AR without buying from the 3 main vendors and losing valuable reputation points!

Yeah but I'm not sure to count that since only the Matron gave you exp. I'd rather just caution people against gaining weapon exp at arkfalls for the most part/overall so they aren't disappointed unless today's patch fixes it. I'll be keeping an eye on it after the patch but I work 13-hr shifts tonight and tomorrow so I won't be able to check if it's still semi-broken until thurs night.

What i found as the fastest way for me to get this achievement, was to play the co-op mission Scrapworks Salvage,it seemed to be the fastest as i was getting a average of 500,000 to 700,000 exp on my weapon per full run through of the mission.

When you start running out of guns to use, the best thing i can say to do (if you were doing this with assault rifles like me) would be to go to Top-Notch Toolworks, they sell a EMC Service Rifle it's not the best but it will help if you're out of guns and you can buy more then one at a time, around the end levels 17-19 it will take about 3 guns maxed out to gain a level on your weapon skill.

Definitely the best way. A bit boring but if you're damaging almost every enemy you see on the map, you can easily finish one and a half guns or 1.2-1.5 million weapon exp per run. That's for assault rifles, I can't comment on the other weapons.

Personally I just held onto any AR drops I got from enemies. I was carrying like 10 of them most of the time. I'm not risking spending faction at the faction vendors like top notch until I get the max faction achievement.

You can buy the EMC Service Rifle from the regular merchant at Top-Noth Toolworks. Costs no faction points.

Good method, i'm doing the the same, and i can say this is one of fastest ways. First level "Liberate The Lost" is very fast and not bad for damage too.

For those who are in a hurry and don't mind a slow grind, I've found a method on another website (can't remember which, probably on the Defiance Forums). A number of different users suggested this so I gave it a shot and it works for now (a patch may change this).

Look to the right side of the map and notice the piece of land that looks like a L. This is San Quentin prison. Go hear and work your way across the area, killing raiders and disabling the turrets along the way (4 turrets in total). When you get to the end of the area EGO will tell you that she notices advanced weaponry in the area. Approaching the rocket launcher will trigger a fight with numerous raiders. The good news: more rocket launchers appear and they respawn, making clearing out the enemies very easy.

Here's the good part. After clearing out the raiders, a Hulker will appear. Drop your launcher and don't touch it again. Pull out whatever weapon you are trying to level up and unload on the Hulker. He has a lot of health and can take a lot of damage. Weapons gain exp based on the damage they deal, making the Hulker great for leveling weapon skill. You can jump over the crates to help keep from getting cornered. When the Hulker is nearly dead, he will take his bomb and slam it into his chest. EGO should say "He's not gonna stop" or something along these lines (didn't always happen, so watch for him using the bomb on himself). It's at this point you'll want to suicide or let the Hulker finish you. When you respawn (in the same area, no running back here) the Hulker will be at full health again. He may still be stuck in a running animation or appear damaged, but once you shoot him a bit, his appearance resets and he acts normal again. Do this over and over until you get you weapon skill to the desired level (I'm using this to complete pursuits for weapons I don't plan to use often like Infectors or BMG's).

A quick note: The Hulker has a simple pattern. He attacks normally until you damage him a certain amount. Once this threshold has been met, he will start charging all over the place. When this happens, he will charge 3 times. After the 3rd time he slams into a wall, he will slump over and his metal skull cap falls off (easy criticals, more damage, faster leveling). When he is almost dead, he will just continue charging, hence EGO saying "He's not gonna stop." If you miss the animation and EGO's audio doesn't play, use this to tell you when to die. If he charges a 4th time, it's time to die.

Lastly, make sure to bring plenty of weapons for your journey. Once you cap out the exp for a particular gun, it no longer contributes to your weapon skill. Depending on your dedication to this grind, pack accordingly.

As I mentioned at the top, this is not my guide. I found it on a website's forums, posted by many people as the best way to level weapons quickly. I'm just passing it along so others can use it if they wish. If not, there's the old-fashioned way-use the weapon you wish to cap skill with to kill EVERYTHING, because this will take a while legit (I got lvl 17 assault rifles and got impatient).

UNCONFIRMED: Epsilon Theta mentioned something in the comments:
"Epsilon Theta You can earn this by gaining the last level from a store bonus such as the one gained by entering the codes."

I have not confirmed Epsilon Theta's info (honestly, I deleted the game from my hard drive after completion due to frustration and cannot confirm this). If anyone else confirms this, please let me know and I can further update this solution.

It's good for that achievement, but bad for others, because you not recieve any XP (EGO) for doing this. I can recommend this method only if you need boost some pursuits linked to weapon damage.

Ya, if you get to the hulker alone, it's easy-peasy. If not, just kill it with whoever, leave the prison via front gate (walk out, don't fast travel), and come right back in. It's faster this way than fast traveling and driving back. Not sure how far out you have to walk. I always went to the respawn point right outside.

I can see Tornad0s's point. I just got tired of Assault Rifles and wanted to play with other toys ><. I played through the whole story and a lot of random emergencies and co-op missions and was still at lvl 17. I used this to get over the hump. Note: I probably would have got lvl 20 from my other activities if I hadn't got sidetracked by a Pursuit (I only needed lvl 5 in SMG's for one), not to mention learning the hard way that capped out weapons don't give skill increases.

If you use only the weapon you are trying to cap out and make sure to constantly change weapons when you max out a gun, you can get this legit no problem. This solution is for if you get impatient, like I did.

***Easiest Place to Rank Weapons Up FAST!!! (DLC-5 UPDATE)***

As of DLC-5 the best way to boost your weapon skill has got a whole hell of a lot easier. Get into a Major Dark Matter Arkfall with whatever weapon you want to max out.

I recommend you use a SMG, LMG, or AR. They go pretty damn fast.

When you get to the end with the boss fight with the Monolith, activate one of the glowing green pillars, then attack the Monolith. The green pillars make your attack do something like 10X more damage and you'll rack up points super quick.

DLC-5 made this easier because you accrue points towards mastery regardless if the weapon is mastered or not. So no more switching out guns. Just use the same one.

You can rank up one weapon multiple times in one fight using this technique. If you get bored fighting the Monolith you can rack up some fast points fighting the Volge Warmaster as well, but it in nowhere near as fast as the Monolith.

With patch 1.020, you can reset the mastery of any of your weapons in the Salvage Matrix at the cost of some Ark Salvage (one gun I did only cost 510). It takes 20 minutes, but it resets the XP of that weapon back to 0, so you can keep using it and keep gaining levels. If you're looking to follow one of the farming strategies, either take a 20 minute break or take another gun of the same type with you and level that one while you wait for the other to finish being reset.

Now with being able to level weapons through Arkfalls, it is much easier to obtain this achievement. I would suggest using your personal favorite weapon to do this task. My favorites for reference were the assault rifle and LMG. Go and have fun obliterating the smaller fodder and then take out the larger enemies that show up and you will have a quicker and funner way to level up your weapons quicker that way. Good luck!

there is now a very easy way to level up several different weapon types. now that incursions have been introduced to the game, you will see a radiation icon on the map, this indicates there is an incursion. they will also be surrounded by a big yellow ring each one contains small encounters which must be completed in order to activate the final main event.

there are 2 different types of incursions volge and infected and its the infected that u want to boost your weapon skill with. in an infected incursion u will go against raiders and infected, when u encounter the infected there will be 2 different mission types a small one which is all ways located on the road and the 2nd which is the one u will be able to boost your weapons the most.

once you are in the big infected encounter you will see at least 4-5 big block/containers grouped together. this is where the infected will keep spawning from once the green mist appears, just keep shooting them with explosive weapons. you will end up getting multiply hit counts and your skill level will start to shoot up b4 you know it. depending on what level your current skill is on you can gain at least 4-5 skill levels for each incursion event.

this is a list of explosive weapons to use for some of your individual weapon types

COMBAT SHOTGUN--- CLUSTER SHOT
PISTOL--VOLGE THUNDERER--DLC REQUIRED
SAWN OFF SHOTGUN--COURIER
ROCKET LAUNCHER--ANY WILL DO
BOLT ACTION SNIPER--VOLGE LIGHTING RIFLE--DLC REQUIRED
DETONATOR-- ANY WILL DO BUT A BIG BOOMER IS BEST

u can also use this for automatic weapons as there will be multiply targets to hit at the same time and they will be grouped close together.

hope this helps with some of the more time consuming weapon types like the bolt action sniper and sawn off shotgun.

This is unlocked by fully leveling a weapon skill to 20. For example, use Assault Rifles until your skill in them is 20. Each weapon has an XP bar that is filled by doing damage with the weapon. The XP earned with the weapon adds to the weapon skill. Once that XP bar is filled, you need to swap to a new weapon to continuing leveling the skill. The little white bar under the weapon and ammo part of your HUD displays the current weapon skill level progress. To check the progress of all weapons, open your Start menu and use or to tab over to your Stats menu. As you scroll down, you will see the progress bars and current levels of all weapon types.

UNOBTAINABLE DUE TO SERVER CLOSURE

Weapon skills go up to level 20. To max out your weapon skill, you need to simply keep using a certain weapon type. Every time you do damage with a weapon, you’ll gain weapon experience. Each and every weapon in your inventory has a cap to how much experience you can gain with it. If you select a weapon in your inventory, you’ll see a white progress bar with a certain number in it. If you reach the maximum, you won’t gain any experience for that weapon, nor any weapon experience towards the weapon skill if you keep using that weapon, so you’ll need to use a new weapon, from the same weapon type, to gain experience towards the weapon skill. You can use the Reset Weapon Mastery Points in the Salvage matrix to reset your weapon experience, but this will cost you a considerable amount of Ark Salvage. There are many weapon types in the game, but do try to stick to one weapon type as your main.

This will easily come over time if you don't switch weapon types to often. However, there are 2 methods that will level up your weapon skills very fast. By playing co-op instances, and by using a so called enemy "The Hulker" in San Quention. It's right above the Shondu's Consulate fast travel, at the docks. Go there and you'll need to deactivate 4 generators. Once done, you'll have to fight of waves of enemies. Use the rocket launchers that respawn; you'll instantly kill them with it. Once all waves are completed, the Hulker will spawn. Attack it with the weapon (type) you want to level. Once he's almost dead, get yourself killed and you'll respawn in the same area with the Hulker, who has all his health back. Repeat this to quickly gain weapon EXP and skills. Dying only takes a small amount of Scrip. There's an ammo crate, so don't worry about ammo. Do bring multiple weapons, since you'll level your weapons fairly quickly.

You can speed up the progress. How much faster depends on how much money you’re willing to spend. The game has a store with micro-transactions and the PSN Store has booster packs. With real money you can purchase Bits with which you can purchase Skill EGO boosts, or you can get these as part of the booster packs in the PSN Store. You can also join a clan/group and get Clan/Group Skill boosts. These will stack. To check if there are any boosts active, press and use to open the Boosts tab.

You can check your weapon progress, by pressing and use to open the Stats tab. Scroll down for all your weapon levels and progression.

Experience comes from the very process of causing damage (a lot of guides on pumping up weapons on “fat” mobs on YouTube also tell you about this). Fully upgraded weapons can be reset using green coins in the weapon upgrade tab. The weapon must be removed from all use slots so that it can be improved/reduced level of pumping.

Each time you use a weapon, it gains experience (the weapon's white experience bar is filled). Exactly the same amount of experience goes into the skill of using this weapon. If a weapon's experience is full and it has gained a level, you will stop gaining weapon experience using that weapon. Thus, to develop a skill you will always need to use an “unpumped” weapon. In total, each weapon has 20 levels. To get this trophy, you need to get 19 levels with one weapon (starting from 1 to 20). Please note that the weapon skill goes for killing enemies - therefore, for the development of weapon skills, it will be more profitable to kill a large number of weak opponents than a small number of stronger ones. The fastest way to get this trophy is to ride along the roads in the farm area and shoot monsters in dynamic missions. There, most opponents will die with one accurate shot.

You gain experience for any weapon by the amount of damage done by shooting at the enemy. You gain the most from headshots and on larger, more powerful enemies. At maximum experience, the weapon receives the mastered status and you need to move on to the next unleveled weapon of this class, otherwise the skill of the weapon will not increase. I would like to especially draw your attention to the fact that weapons of the same class (for example, shotguns) can go through several skill branches... in other words, there are several types of weapons in one class. For example, there are three shotguns: combat shotguns, pumpshotguns and sawed-off shotguns. So carefully look at which weapon corresponds to which skill (type)!

Upgrading weapons to level 20. Basic moments.
Where can I see the level of pumping? Click start in the game, Scroll down to the statistics (how much money, keys, hammers, etc. we have) and in the same menu scroll down, where the statistics of all types of weapons begin.
If you play for trophies, then we leave only two types of weapons in your inventory (you can even use white ones, if you’re unlucky with other colors): weapons with massive damage (grenade launcher or bazooka-bazuka with additional grenades) and any type of rapid fire (I can’t cope with shotguns; ( ). Why two types?
