How to unlock the Defender achievement in Dragon Age: Origins - Definitive Guide

After picking the 3 characters you're going to take to the final boss fight with the Archdemon during the Denerim climax, you'll be faced with a number of battles through the Market District, the Alienage and the Royal Palace before arriving at Fort Drakon.

During these battles you have to ability to summon armies within the 'Advanced' section of the Radial Menu. To unlock this achievement, you must keep half of these armies alive and it unlocks upon arriving at Fort Drakon if I remember correctly. During the Archdemon fight you can use the armies as much as you want.

The most certain way to get this is to just not call out any of the armies. It's not even necessary on the easier difficulties anyway.

Just a quick note: It's not even necessary to call armies for Nightmare difficulty. The only time I called my armies was when you go through the gates and are ambushed by Darkspawn. Even then it's not necessary. Now the final boss on Nightmare I used all my armies lol.

if you get humans (50), werewolves (16), dwarves (50), and mages (12), you total 128, just keep 64 alive, like dont use any dwarves or werewolves and you should be fine, assuming you need your armies at all...

The easiest way to get this achievement is to side with Branka on "Paragon of her kind" and choose to keep the Anvil of the void. This unlocks the use of Golems in the Final battle. Just use them as they kill stuff fast and can take alot of dmg.

*Side note* I got this by using the golems at the market, elves at the alienage, and the arl's soldiers at the palace on normal difficulty

Since you can only pick one group at a time, I suggest you use the dwarves against the first wave in the market...the humans in the alienage and leave the mages and elves for the endgame.

I made it through the alienage and market only losing 5 total troops, and the cheevo dinged after Fort Drakon loaded up.

The area that this trophy counts in are the areas before you enter Fort Drakon. As long as you don't summon any of your allies, this trophy is yours. Then you can summon your allies on the rooftop to 'help' with the final battle.

During "The Final Battle", you'll gain the option to call in support troops (, then select Advanced, the choices are listed on the bottom of the radial menu) from the human, dwarven, or elven armies, or a group of mages. The total will vary depending on who you side with. As long as more than half survive by the time you reach Fort Drakon, this will unlock.

During the Final Battle, you'll have to clear the Market District, Alienage and Royal Palace. This is where you'll be given the opportunity to use armies. Simply make a count of your armies in the radial menu, divide it by two and try to keep that number alive. You'll unlock this achievement once you enter Fort Drakon. If you don't get it, simply reload a previous save and make sure half your armies are alive.

Strategy: The Market District is easy to clear without any armies. For the Alienage, a single set of 50 should work out for you. This should be enough to keep the heavy wave occupied while you slaughter them. Be sure to take out the enemy mages first, then the general. For the Royal Palace all you'll need is your 6 golems. You should easily be able to make it with more than half your warriors intact.

Like GrimmLAN13 said, the easiest way to do this is to not summon any allied troops to help you throughout the final quest.

Though if you want to use your troops, there is a way to keep them alive. You just need to level them up. The emissaries at your camp /do/ serve a purpose, and when give the correct items, will level your troops up.

* Golems - are at max level and don't require any items (4 troops, lvl 15)
* Werewolves - are at max level and don't require any items (16 toops, lvl 12)

Dalish - Elfroots, deep mushrooms, metal shards, deathroots - Max troops 50 + Max lvl 9 - 10 xp per item
Redcliffe - Money - Max troops 50 + Max lvl 7 - 10 xp for 50 silver; 42 xp for 2 sovereigns; 225 xp for 10 sovereigns; 750 xp for 30 sovereigns
Dwarves - Sapphires, Amethysts, Malachites, Topazes - Max troops 50 + Max lvl 9 - 10 xp per gem
Mages - Runes (no grandmasters) - Max troops 12 + Max lvl 10 - 10 xp per rune
Templars - Runes (no grandmasters) - Max troops 16 + Max lvl 12 - 10 xp per rune

There is no good way to tell if your troops have been leveled up. Some people like to go by what the emissaries say after you've deposited items, but it's not conclusive.

During "The Final Battle", you'll gain the option to call in support troops (, then select Advanced, the choices are listed on the bottom of the radial menu) from the human, dwarven, or elven armies, or a group of mages. There are 162 total. As long as more than 81 survive by the time you reach Fort Drakon, this will unlock.

During the “Final Battle” you will have the opportunity to call for reinforcements (using, select “Troops”, and then the one you need from the list) from people, gnomes, elves, magicians, etc. it all depends on who you entered into an agreement with. You need to get to the Dragon Fort without at least half of them remaining alive. The easiest way to achieve this is simply not to call soldiers for help; if you play on normal or low difficulty, you can calmly go through everything without resorting to their help.
