How to unlock the Menacing achievement in Dragon Age: Origins - Definitive Guide
Very easy exploit to obtain this:
After leaving Lothering for the first time, head to the Frostback Mountain Pass and enter Orzammar. Once inside, head to Dust Town and talk to Zerlinda to obtain the "Zerlinda's Woe" quest. Now, head back to the commons and go inside Tapster's Tavern. Talk to Ordel and respond in this order: "3. What kind of monster throws his child out on the street!", and then, "2. (Intimidate) If you don't take them back, that's murder.", then finally, "1. He's a baby, not a cur. And she loves him." Ordel will now leave the tavern. Exit the tavern, go back inside, and repeat the process with Ordel until you have both Bully and Menacing.
This was done with the Ultimate Edition, and with all of the updates installed, so there should be no problem.

For this you will need the skill Coercion. Skills are available to anyone, but I'm guessing a Rogue will have the easiest way for this as they will gather up skillpoints quicker; 1 every 2 levels opposed to 1 every 3 levels for Mages and Warriors. When intimidating, Strength will be the stat checked against, so be sure to have atleast some points invested. (16+ reccomended).
Use 5 or 10 succsessful intimidate options during conversations when available and Bully and Menacing will pop. It's also a good idea to save first as intimidating people have a negative effect on your companions more often than not.
You also have to succsessfully intimidate enough people during a single game, for both Bully and Menacing, and cannot reload a game to have it count more than once, or done with separate characters.
The "difficult" wording of the achievement doesn't seem to mean much. From what I could tell, the intimidate options in the origins stories did not count, but everything else seemed to.
Here's a quick list of people to intimidate:
- Farmer by the entrance, Lothering (press him on Loghain)
- Outside Merchant, Lothering
- Doomsayer outside the Chantry, Lothering
- Reverend Mother, Lothering (When you ask to have Sten released)
- Owen the blacksmith, Redcliffe (When entering)
- Dwyn the dwarf, Redcliffe (after breaking in)
- Dwyn #2, Redcliffe (getting him to fight)
- Bevin the little boy, Redcliffe (Revealing the secret)
- Bevin #2, Redcliffe (Getting the key)
- Lloyd the Tavernkeep, Redcliffe (get him out and fighting)
- Mother Hannah, Redcliffe Chantry (The holy symbols)
There are probably tons more - leave a comment and I'll add them to the list.
For a last tip, note how many there are in Redcliffe. Most of these have Persuade counterparts, so if you were to save before doing them all and reloading once you got Menacing, you are that much closer to the 25 Persuasions achievement.

Hmm... seems the achievement might be a bit buggy then. I didn't get any intimidates during the origin (Circle of Magi), so it wasn't that. Finally got it, but I had a total of 15. Did all the ones you mentioned, and then some.

Just to be clear on the issue of reloading, you say I can't reload to have it count more than once, but will it still count once if I reload to choose a different option to avoid the negative effect?

See "Bully" for more details. This is the same idea, just 10 instead of five.

In some dialogues you will come across an option to intimidate characters (Before such an option it will be written in parentheses (Intmidate / Intimidate)), select it. This option is a little less common in the game than the persuasion option, so try to choose it whenever possible. Its success is determined by the level of your Strength, as well as the presence of the “influence” skill, while the skill gives a greater chance of success than a high strength indicator, so it is very important to develop it to the maximum level.
I managed to get an achievement for Persuasion in one playthrough. The only thing that Intimidation chose virtually always when it was available.
