How to unlock the Poacher achievement in Dragon Age: Origins - Definitive Guide

After making your way through the Werewolf lair, you will see a group of 3-5 werewolves waiting for u to get close to start the dialog. Save here if you want both endings.

To get this you have to kill Whitefang which is the "spirit" aka the white chick with roots for hands. Just keep talking about how you are only looking for Whitefang and the heart. The dialog is straight forward, another possibility is to go back and get the elf leader and bring him back, and then side with him so he will help you kill the werewolves. Either way as long as the wolves die, you will get it.

After you attack and win the fight, the achievements pops.

Reload your save and kill elf and his leader for the other achievement. Note* to get the other result you must have level 3 coersion.

Note** There is no achievement for the scenario I like best, which is to free the the werewolves of the curse. I know its stupid but oh well. Hope this helps

The achievement doesn't pop until after you leave the lower levels and talk to Zathrian again.

You do get this achievement for freeing the werewolves from the curse. It just doesn't pop until you go back to camp and talk to the new keeper.

I also got it by going to camp like GameTagwastaken pointed out. I thought it would have sided with the wolves though.

neg vote as motivation to add suggested detail in to the solution. If someone doesn't read the comments they will be miss lead, even so its nice the see the solution author acknowledge any discrepancy as to not leave people still wondering. I too can confirm the achievement can be won by ending the curse and talking to the new keeper back at the dalish camp. Msg me you have updated your solution and I will change my vote to a positive.

To begin this quest, go to the Brecilian Outskirts and speak to the Dalish Elves. Head into the Brecilian Forest. You'll be attacked by combinations of wolves, werewolves, bears, Darkspawn, and trees. Yes, trees. Find the Grand Oak and it'll ask (yes, ask) you to find it's acorn that was taken by a mad hermit mage. When you the hermit, you'll have to play his game. You can't attack him and take it. You have to play along. When you catch him, he'll offer you the acorn in a trade. Return it to the Grand Oak, and you'll be provided with a way to reach Witherfang. Make your way through the ruins to the werewolves.

When you reach the end of the ruins, you will be asked to return with Zathrian to negotiate. Side with Zathrian when asked and wipe out the werewolves.

One Playthrough Method: In the room where first meet the shadow werewolves, make an additional save. In one, convince the werewolves to attack the elves. Reload and then convince the werewolves to negotiate.

To start this building, go to the Brelian Forest, talk to the elves there and go into the forest. In the forest you have to fight wolves, werewolves, bears and trees. In the first location of the forest you need to find the Great Oak, he will ask you to return the acorn to him. Go to the next location, there, in the clearing, you will find a crazy hermit magician. You can steal an acorn from his stump, or exchange it for one of the items available for exchange. You can also kill the Oak and follow the hermit's branch. In any case, you will get access to the werewolf dungeons. After you get to their lair, kill them and give the heart to Zathrian, or in the dialogue convince Zathrian to remove the curse from the werewolves. For this, the elves will become your friends and take part in the final battle.
By the way, if you are going through the game as a character of the Mage class, then I advise you to complete this quest one of the first. Since you will be taught the skill of a Battle Mage.
