How to unlock the Lair King achievement in Dragon's Lair - Definitive Guide
There are two exceptions: First, on the rooms with the falling platform, you have to jump off at the last possible stop. There are four of these rooms total. Two of them have three stops and two have nine stops. There's no real way to know which have three and which have nine without guessing, so make sure to save at the beginning of the room and reload if you're waiting for the ninth stop and there's only three.
The other exception is the Dragon's Lair itself, aka the final screen. You must reach this room with all five lives. Spend your first four lives playing through the whole scene, stopping right before the final input and dying. On your final life, you can complete the last move and finish the game.
Falling Circular Platform Scenes: There are four versions of this scene; 3 ledge and 9 ledge, each mirrored. To obtain a perfect score, you must jump off the platform at the last possible ledge. This is where saving is crucial as it is difficult to tell if you are on a 3 or 9 ledge scene.
Mist Room with Snakes Scene: It is possible to miss out on 49 points here. Ensure that you do not do a shortcut here by bypassing the third in the series of A button prompts (if playing with a controller). You should input four moves on this scene, not three.
Once you reach the Dragon's Lair scene, you should have 288,494 points. When the scene starts and Dirk exclaims "Wow!", another 49 points is added to your total making your score 288,543. Save your game here if you have the required points.
You will want to continue playing through this scene as normal, however when you get to the final move to kill the dragon do not continue. Let the dragon kill you, and do this a total of four times. Save your game each time you start the scene over again. On your last life kill the dragon.
After your first death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 315,338 and 4 lives left. Save.
After your second death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 342,133 and 3 lives left. Save.
After your third death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 368,928 and 2 lives left. Save.
After your fourth and final death, after Dirk says "Wow", you should have 395,723 and 1 life left. Save.
Now, on your final life and when you defeat Singe, you should have 427,469 points.
This trophy requires you to play Arcade mode on Easy. The key is getting the absolute most points from the game so this includes ensuring that certain extended scenes are played fully and accurately. It's a good idea to save your game right before each falling platform sequences so that if it's not an extended scene you can reload your game and keep going. Arcade mode on Easy provides bonus points in certain animation scenes that are otherwise unavailable in Home Easy mode.
- You MUST play on Arcade Easy mode with five lives. Hard mode is missing a single point-awarding scene (the first whirlpool), and Home mode does not award you the 49-point starting bonus for the first scene. Three lives is not enough to get max points. This is actually true to the original arcade, and I am extremely surprised at the accuracy in this version.
- On the falling elevator scenes, you must jump on the LAST POSSIBLE bridge to get maximum points. Keep in mind that two of the four scenes have NINE possible jumping locations (bridges). (Three of the four scenes start you facing left, and one of those continues after the first three bridges. The scene that starts you facing right ALWAYS has nine bridges.)
- When you get to Singe's Lair, play your first four lives missing the last possible input, which is the Sword button after pressing up to dodge Singe's tail. On your last life, complete the game, and you should have the max score if you did everything right.
The idea is to make sure you're not inadvertently missing the extended scenes (9 exit sections instead of 3). These will happen randomly so it's important to save your game before each platform scene so you can either reload your game if it's NOT an extended scene or do the platform sequence hopping off ONLY at the very last (9th) section for maximum points. This is done for each of the 4 platform scenes.
