How to unlock the Gold Digger achievement in F1 2013 - Definitive Guide

There are two sets of Scenario Mode you have to complete for this achievement.

The first is on the normal 2013 screen, there are four sets to do here: ROOKIE, TEAM MATE, CHAMPIONSHIP and FINAL YEAR
The last set are located in classics mode: CLASSIC

When at the screen to select the scenario you want to do use RB to change the difficulty to GOLD

If you have played F1 2012 you will find that these are a lot easier than last year. Roughly half of them you are given the advantage of just having to defend your position, or you start on the grid and are able to pass most of the field before the first corner.
If you have to catch up to someone these again aren't amazingly difficult, race as clean as you can but don't worry too much if you go off a bit here and there.

I was usually in gold position without too much trouble and then it's a case of defending that position.

General Tips:
- Race to the last lap unless you spin out and have already used your flashback, it seemed to me that the AI slow down quite a lot on the last lap most of the time so you could take it then if you haven't already

- When you are in position to take gold don't get greedy and try to move up the grid, if you can do easily then by all means go for it but I wouldn't risk out-breaking into a corner for no reason.

- Getting out in front and defending is the best way to get these, you can block all over the track and not get penalised so block them every chance you get

- Your car is stronger than you think, I found that the front wing doesn't desintergrate as easily as is has in previous F1 games. You can't go full speed into a corner smashing into the pack to help you round a corner but you can take a hard nudge or two

Defending Strat:
- Cover as much of the track as you can
- Look out for the arrows behind you and adjust to stay in front of them
- You can knock their front tyre with your back tyre to either slow them down or spin them out without penalty
- If they are next to you move then onto the grass, they will slow down when they touch it but be aware this will leave the whole other side of the track open of anyone else to come past you
- Try to avoid ANY contact with your front tyres, it will more than likely end in a penalty for you

Hope this helps, if you feel I could add something to this solution please let me know

There are five sets of scenarios to complete to unlock this achievement:
Rookie
Team Mate
Championship
Final Year
Classic

Classic being the one most people miss, as it's in its own separate section of the menus. Each set has 5 individual scenarios, with the exception of Classic, which just has the 3.

Broadly speaking, these scenarios are split up into:
Defend your position
Gain a certain position
Beat a certain driver

First things first, from the menu you'll want to hit cn_RB to select the Gold level of each scenario. The requirements are identical between Bronze Silver and Gold, but the AI goes up a notch each time. You do only get 1 flashback to redo any mistake, so you may as well restart the challenge if you mess up early on, but these are short races so it's not too demanding.

Defend a Position

Of the scenarios, the easiest ones are the defend a position ones, which require no overtaking at all. Drive cautiously around corners, and turn on the opposition indicator arrows that show you where cars approaching from behind you are so you can aggressively block them off or shove them onto the grass/into the wall when they try to overtake. The AI are cautious in the corners and will most likely solely try to pass on the straights, which makes things easier.

There's one scenario where you lose your front wing and need to pit to replace it then win your place back. I found it easier to stay on the track without a front wing and defend my position aggressively. You won't get any penalties for blocking off the AI drivers or for ramming them sideways as they overtake - so long as you're in front of them before the move you'll be fine, so use this to your advantage. This was easier than trying to race well to regain the ~3 positions I lost when I tried to do the scenario properly. If possible, try to ram the AI into a wall to eliminate them from the race completely.

Beat a Certain Driver

Speaking of eliminating the AI - in the Team Mate section things can get very easy indeed - rather than trying to race properly to overtake your teammate, simply eliminate them from the race where possible. This is most obvious in the scenario where you have a puncture and need to pit. You cannot get away with staying out on track, so I slammed on the brakes as soon as I got control of my car and waited for Hamilton to approach. It took a few restarts, but I was able to turn into him as he went for the overtake, destroying his front end and knocking him out of the race completely. I then pitted and did the race at my own pace.

This can also be applied to the scenario where you have a drive through penalty to do, which puts you behind a group of 3 cars when you rejoin the track. I waited for the 3 cars instead, smashed them up a lot (forcing them to pit or retire), then did my drive through penalty. It takes a bit of luck to pull off, but you may find it easier than racing properly.

Another point regarding these tactics - you may pick up 10 second penalties here and there. If you do, it's definitely worth a shot to take out your teammate if possible, after all, if they don't finish you'll beat them even with 30+ seconds of penalties added on.

Gain a Certain Position

The hardest scenarios by far are the ones where you're tasked with reaching a certain position before the end of the race. Thankfully these are split into three groups:

1) Start on grid - you'll start on the grid and have to reach a position. These aren't too bad due to the AI's cautious driving into the first few turns. Use this to your advantage. In these scenarios you MUST take as many places as possible on the first couple of corners. Experiment with absurdly aggressive driving into the first corner, braking as late as possible and trying to bank off other cars without getting a penalty. If you can get close to the position required then carry on racing and you should be able to win the required place. When you reach the position needed ease off and defend as normal. There's no benefit to taking extra places other than a greater cushion against any mistakes, so the choice is yours.

2) Start mid-race in the wet. The AI seem cautious in the wet, so these races aren't too bad. It may take some practice depending on how much you've played the game, but persevere and once you get the hang of things and keeping the car on the track you'll be able to get the wet scenarios done. There's nothing more to say here other than practice and persevere, and if necessary be aggressive on your overtakes (i.e. don't be afraid to use the AI cars to help your cornering if you need to get by them asap)

3) Start mid-race in the dry. The hardest scenarios by far. I found the Sao Paulo race in the Rookie Driver section the hardest of these! There're no exploits here, and there AI tend to drive pretty well, especially around fast corners. They take chicanes very carefully though. You'll need to put together consecutive good laps to drag the AI in, and you'll need to aggressively overtake them, especially closer to the start.

If you're struggling it may be worthwhile trying Rich Fuel (cn_right mid-race then cn_up then cn_up) for a lap or two before switching back down again before your fuel starts to run out. At the Silverstone (British GP) scenario I had to use the Rich Fuel setting to even stand a chance, and my fuel started to run out on the final bend after hitting the right position. Always remember to use your KERS (cn_LB - I prefer to use this at the start of the longest straights), and DRS (cn_Y when you're within 1 second of the car in front).

This is really a case of getting to know the tracks. With Sao Paulo I initially struggled to make any places back, but soon found myself overtaking one or two cars on the initial lap. It's a case of practice and practice, and you'll be able to put together the 3-4 good laps required to get you the position needed. It's no easy task, but it's definitely do-able. And keep at it right to the end unless you're miles off. On one of the scenarios I found myself 1 position down from the goal with one turn left, and decided to brake stupidly late and hit the car in front for the final bend. I luckily didn't get a penalty, pushed the car out of the way as I went by, and got the gold medal.

All-in-all this isn't too demanding, and bar a few scenarios they're all relatively easy. The few that pose a challenge can be beaten given an hour's practice, and doing them will put you in much better stead for the rest of the game. Good luck!

This is easy as it appears the AI is pretty easy to catch, even on hard. One recommendation is to leave your flash back until the last lap as it appears the AI slows down regardless of if you spin or not. Dont panic if its the last lap and you have 2-3 places or 3-4 seconds to make up. The majority of these i completed on the last corner of the last lap.

I should probably add that it didnt glitch, i didnt realise there were 2 scenario menus, one for classic and one for normal, i think you should mention this in the guide as a few people have made the same mistake, same goes for the "gold on all time trials" achievement

Yeah, I noticed this. Its not a glitch, you just need to complete both Modern Scenarios AND Classic Scenarios. But, I found Gold so much easier when I done it on Manual Gear.

For this trophy to pop you will have earn a Gold Medal in all 23 Scenarios. Now 20 of the Scenarios can be found in 'Proving Grounds' whereas the other 3 can be found in 'F1 Classics' on the Main Menu. Please note that you only have to do the first 3 Classic Mode Scenarios, the other two are additional which you get with the Complete Edition or the DLC and therefore, do not contribute to the trophy.

Before you select a scenario, you must press to toggle what medal you wish to go for. Its default setting is Bronze and if you try to do a scenario without changing it to Gold, then the maximum that you can achieve will be Bronze. To find out which medals you have earned for each scenario, just look at the list and to the right of it is a colour, which represents what kind Medal you have earned, if indeed you have already earned one.

In truth these scenarios are quite easy, I usually hit my target with a lap to spare. However, if you are not familiar with the tracks, then you may encounter one or two difficulties.

Tip: for each scenario you are allowed to use one Flashback, which can come in handy if you make a mistake or get a penalty for corner cutting. Also, for most scenarios you get extra laps of fuel, so always check and if there is, be sure to use it by going on to Rich Mix 3.

Scenario Gold Medal Guide

Rookie Driver:

Just Getting Started

Switch to Fuel Mix 3 before the lights go out. Then brake as late as possible going into Turn 1, you should overtake Bianchi at the start, if not in the next few corners. Once you do it is all about maintaining the distance. Do not forgot to switch the fuel back to Mix 2 after lap 1.

It's a Question of Time (3:12)
Immediately switch to Fuel Mix 3 and overtake Ricciardo at the hairpin after the long straight. Make sure you clear Vergne, Maldonado and Di Resta during the next lap, which gives you a relatively clear track to allow you to build a 10 second gap.

Bringing the Car Home (7:22)
Immediately switch to Fuel Mix 3 and pit for a new front wing. You now have 3 laps to overtake 4 cars. A little tip, you can cut the chicane at the start of Sector 2.

Points Scorer (12:43)
Immediately switch to Fuel Mix 3 and you will have 3 laps to make 4 overtakes. You can gain lots of time by cutting the chicane at Turn 1 and cutting the fast chicane at the start of sector 3.

Rookie Champion? (16:35)
Quite a tough challenge, you are going to need 3 perfect laps and in those laps you are going to have to overtake 5 cars, which are faster than your Mclaren. As long as you do not consistently make mistakes, you can do this in the allotted time. Make sure you switch to Fuel Mix 3 at the start. Also, use most of your KERs coming out of Turn 2.

Team Mate Battle

Setting the Standard

Immediately switch to Fuel Mix 3, you are going to need 3 great laps in order to catch Pic. The last chicane towards the end of the lap is the best place to make up lots of time. You can be really aggressive and gain at least a second on the AI. Also, make sure you use KERs coming out of Turn 2 and at the hairpin at the start of Sector 3.

Rain Man (5:09)
The start is the best place to get the job done here. You can even use Fuel Mix 3 for the start, however make sure you turn it down after Turn 1. So from the start go down the inside and out-brake the AI, you can easily overtake your target. I would even suggest restarting if you do not get the job done, because after Turn 1, it can be quite tricky to overtake, because of the adverse weather conditions and the nature of the track.

Engine Troubles (7:35)
Can be a tricky challenge this one. A little tip, for Sectors 1 and 2, switch to Fuel Mix 3 and then before sector 3, switch to Mix 1. This is because on the straights of Sector 1, it's where you are most vulnerable in terms of being overtaken – so you are going to need maximum power! Whereas in Sector 3, it is virtually impossible to be overtaken.

Deflated (11:39)
After pitting, change to Fuel Mix 3. The final chicane right at the end of the track, you can easily cut and gain a second or two over the AI. However do not go flat out through it, otherwise you will receive a penalty, so make sure you lift.

Seasons End (17:33)
Before the lights go out switch to Fuel Mix 3 and go down the inside and brake as late as possible. Plant the car on the apex and if executed perfectly you can easily go from 14th to 5th after Turn 1. It is worth you restarting this race in order to perfect this move at the start, as it is a golden opportunity to make fundamental gains. As long as you are in the top 7 after Turn 1, it's a good start and should make the remainder of the challenge easy.

Championship Title

Scores on the Board

Again, switch to Fuel Mix 3 before the lights go out. Out-brake most of the AI by going up the inside of Turn 1. You can easily overtake your target going into Turn 1. If you do not get him by the first couple of turns, then you might want to consider restarting.

Moving up a Gear (1:22)
A real challenge in dealing with a compromised gearbox. Thankfully you are racing round Spain, so it is hard to overtake. However, you can cut the chicane towards the end of the lap, this should get you out of the DRS Zone which should fend off your target who will be gradually closing in on you. Be careful not to cut the chicanes too much, otherwise you will receive a penalty.

Slippery in the Wet (7:39)
You are going to need 4 perfect laps round a wet Canada if you want to beat Vettel. As long as you do not spin, you will stand a good chance. Remember to attack the last chicane aggressively as this will gain you a second over the AI. Also remember that the AI brake much earlier in the wet, so just be cautious of that.

Consistency is the Key (12:45)
Again, you are going to need some solid laps round India if you are going to be successful for this challenge. In Sector 2 you can blatantly cut some corners and gain a second or two. Make sure you use KERs coming out of the hairpin and onto the straight towards the end of Sector 1.

Safety First (19:13)
It is important not to get stuck behind a car for too long as this will cause your target to pull away. You can cut the fast corners in Sector 1, this will gain you at least half a second.

Final Year

Driving on Ice (6:06)

You have 3 laps to survive with heavily worn tyres. Just be smooth with the throttle when coming out of corners and this challenge is quite easy, providing that you can keep a cool head.

Wings (8:32)
After pitting you are going to need some solid laps round Monaco. You can cut the corner straight after coming out of the tunnel, this will gain you a second, but do not do it flat out as you will get a penalty.

Back to Front (11:38)
You can make this challenge hard for yourself if you get stuck behind a car for too long, so make sure you make your overtakes efficiently. Thankfully because the safety car has bunched everyone up, you can overtake cars in clusters of 2 or 3.

Don't Stop - Believing (0:00)
You do this either 2 ways. One put in some good lap times and then serve your penalty at the end or serve your penalty now and then re-overtake Perez. Also you have one lap of Rich Fuel available to you.

Finishing the Job (19:41)
Before the lights go out switch to Fuel Mix 3 and go down the inside and brake as late as possible. Plant the car on the apex and if executed perfectly you can easily go from 14th to 5th after Turn 1. It is worth you restarting this race in order to perfect this as it's a golden opportunity to make fundamental gains. As long as you are in the top 7 after Turn 1, it's a good start and should make the remainder of the challenge easy.

Classic Car Scenarios

Ahead of the Pack

Very easy, you start off in 2nd and you have to finish a 3 lap race in 1st. You can get the job done at the start by starting with Fuel Mix 3 and getting the jump on Prost.

Holding your Nerve (3:39)
The most challenging classic scenario, you are going to have to pass the two 2 cars and win in the space of 3 laps. Use all of your Rich Fuel in order to make up the 7 second deficit.

Three of the Best (8:25)
For the final Challenge you start in 10th place and have to make your way through the field and finish on the podium within 4 laps. You can do most of the hard work from the start, by going on Rich Fuel and out-braking the AI into Turn 1.

This is found in Proving grounds and there are 4 sets of scenarios to complete, plus the classic three, make sure to use the to tab through untill you are aiming for gold difficulty.

These scenarios involve things like stop for fresh tyres and then catch 4 cars up or manage tyres to the end of the race, etc.

You will also have to complete the Classic scenarios section as well for this achievement.
