How to unlock the Alien Archivist achievement in Fallout 3 - Definitive Guide

EDIT 14/02/2019 - Replaying Fallout 3 on PS3, made some amendments to the guide. Feels weird editing a post from 10 years ago, but hope someone still finds it useful!

These are in order of discovery. You MUST find the first 19 before the space walk, you cannot get back to the lower level afterwards. Pretty sure the last six need to be done before completing the DLC, needs confirming.

1. #14: After escaping your cell, head left. It's in the far right room.
2. #22: As above.
3. #15: As above.
4. #3: In the room after the first red health arch, on your left.
5. #1: As above.
6. #12: As above.
7. #5: On one of the stasis chambers in the room where you get the spacesuit.
8. #6: As above.
9. #7: As above.
10. #8: As above.
11. #2: In the Cryo labs, in the southwestern corner of the rectanglular shaped building to the south.
12. #11: In the Cryo labs, the second northmost room before you go through to the Cryo storage (Right of the door).
13. #17: As above but left of the door.
14. #25: Cryo storage, room at the southern tip.
15. #16: In the bottom left corner of the Cryo storage, on the lower level.
16. #4: After teleporting back to the Cryo labs, head directly south and use the door release switch. Hop down to the lower level to grab the recording.
17. #13: Cargo hold, in the research lab in front of the lunar module in the left-most room.
18. #21: In the next room, near some robot Giddyup Buttercup horses (the 6 horses, not the dozen or so down the stairs).
19. #19: Go to the maintenance level, then after meeting up with Sally and making your way through the scrap, you will end up in a large room with a healing arch on your left and an alien behind an energy shield in front of you. After killing the aliens, look to the right of the door you entered through.

THE PREVIOUS 19 LOGS MUST BE COLLECTED BEFORE THE SPACEWALK, YOU CANNOT RETURN TO THESE AREAS. Take a second to double-check the Notes section of your Pip-Boy to make sure you have all 19 so far.

20. #24: After the space walk, enter the weapons lab. It's in the control room in the south in a slightly lowered section.
21. #20: When you enter the experimentation lab, head right until you get into a room with two big torture chair looking things. Do a 180 and look at the wall to find it.
22. #10: In the experimentation lab, in the final room along with the generator.
23. #9: Beside the operating tables in the experimentation lab with the abominations.
24. #18: On the upper level of the bio research control room.
25. #23: In the living quarters cafeteria, after the Death Ray (Thanks to THEeskEMO)

I guess this comment is sort of out of place, but I found a terminal in the trash disposal place and it talks of a safe hidden in the desert with a super rare gun in it...has anybody else found this yet?

Also, good job on the guide so far :)

Also hacked the terminal but no idea about the gun yet. GameFAQs will probably have info somewhere.

Still working on the guide, I could copy and paste other people's but may as well finish it now I've started :)

LAZORZ R BEASTY the terminal unlocks a safe within the Cargo Hold area that has a unique weapon called MPLX Novasurge(plasma pistol). To find the safe, head south once inside the Cargo Hold and look for an area where a machine is dropping random things into a pit. Hope that helps.

It's supossedly in the maintanance room accessed by a teleporter in the main room with the big reactor thing in it. Im still looking for it too.

Also thanks to InfernosPheonix, I found the pistol, it's pretty beastly.

I can't emphasize how much this achievement has annoyed me. First of all if you don't jump into some teleporters quick enough 1 of the logs is locked out. The doors don't open.

This DLC is full!! FULL!!! of glitches!

This was painful, tedious, it felt like more of a job than playing through the game. The map/navigation of this DLC sucks.

Thanks for the good guide, finally got this one. First two times my games glitched at teleporters and either trapped me or trapped stupid sally and friends. Right after getting this and clearing out the bridge my game crashed, phew, close one.

Can't seem to get back to weapons lab and experimentation after doing the bridge. It seems can only get back to engineering after completion.

After beating the DLC (clearing the bridge), there is a teleporter that leads you to the engineering core so you can pick up missed recordings. Except for #19 (I think).

Quick hint: Buy every Stimpak you can carry. You're gonna need them, because there are invisible aliens who somehow are 100x stronger than regular ones. They'll beat the shit out of you, unless you're healing every 10 seconds.

If I've already finished the DLC and just need to get this achievement because I (as always) didn't read the achievement, am I going to be best off starting a new game or is there another way?

Once you complete Mothership Zeta you are locked out of portions of this ship and cannot return to them. If you missed this achievement then the only way to get it is to start a new game.

Have considered this achievement to be one of the reasons somebody invented modio.

Why does this guide not mention straight away that #19 is missable and only obtainable for a short period of time. Why is it listed so far down so inevitably it will be too late before anyone following this guide can get it.

This is the most glitched part of Fallout going, I froze 3 times in 20 mins(rebooted consloe) got trapped in the cryo-freeze room as the teleporter didn't work and the doors were locked ans at least four times, my compains stood still or wouldn't come through the teleporter(at the robot production facility, where you meet the captain and after the space walk) this DLC is a chore.

Yeah, I agree, it's full of bugs. I had to restart from the beginning due to a corrupt autosave, but no other major glitches for me. Many people don't seem to be so lucky though. Hopefully New Vegas will be more polished.
I've been meaning to update the guide and make it a little clearer, but I traded F3 in recently. Anyone is welcome to contribute to this guide with additional info, or use it as a basis for a new guide. Happy hunting!

19 wasnt that bad.

After shutting down all the generators I went back to the Engineering Core, and took the teleporter to Maintenance Level (its on the left side of the map), go a little ways through there and you will find Sally in a trash elevator thing, speak with her and it will start moving, eventually putting you in the Waste Disposal, go a little ways through here (its linear). and you will come to an open room with an alien forcefield in front of you and a healing arch to your left. After dealing with the aliens look to the left of the door you came from and its right there!

Keep going and you will talk with Sally and she will show you a teleporter back to the Engineering Core.

Note: After coming back from there the Engineering Level teleporter shut down, so it may be your only chance to grab it...

Just a note:
This tutorial is for anyone who has completed the dlc, couldn't return to get the records.

If you have completed the mission. You will not be able to return the normal way.
There is a work around, it involves these steps:

(Just a warning but doing this will remove dlc related items so it's best to sell them before re-attempting the dlc)

1) Make a save after you have completed the mission.

2) Delete the dlc, reload the game.

3) Save the game while the dlc has been removed.

4) Re-download the dlc, save again. The dlc should be playable again.

Also including video showing all the locations to help find the recordings.

I wanted to make a solution that was easier to understand......
For one, the recordings don't look like holodisks, they actually are "part of the ship", they are a weird shaped vertical rectangle machine, and you can tell easily if you found one because they have two blue circles on the top that is surrounded by a rotating blue circle, you have to "activate" them to collect the recording, and you can check which recordings you have in your pip-boy (data-notes)....

I used the link by Mik3yj 117 to one of OmegaMustard's awesome (as usual) guides

http://www.gamershell.com/faqs/fallout3mothershipzetaal....0/

WARNING: I highly suggest that you save after each section, because there is a point of no return after the 19th alien recording, for example I saved after I got all 6 in the "Holding Cells", then I saved again after getting all 4 in the Engineering Room. Reason is because I read about transports glitching not allowing them to get a recording they needed, for me, its kinda like reloading a "checkpoint" if you will

(Holding Cells - 6 Logs)....as the guide says, make a left and head to the room at the end of the hall, there is 3 in there (Logs 14, 15, 22), turn around, run to the large room on the other side of the hallway through the red glowing "healing" archway to find the other 3 in this area (Logs 1, 3, 12), they are all on the left side of the room as you enter.....(you should have all 6 before you rescue Sally)

(Engineering Room - 4 Logs)....(you can't miss this area, its "story-related"), you go through the "Steamworks" to get to the "Engineering Core" door, Sally pops back up and leads you straight to them....you know you are in the right place when Sally wants you to open the pods so you can talk to the "spaceman". There is one each by the cowboy, astronuat, samuri, and the BoS medic..(kinda like the Fallout 3 version of the Villiage People)(Logs 5, 6, 7, 8)

(Cryo Lab - 4 Logs) Go through "Door to Cryo Lab", there will be another door ahead of you, go through that door, and look to the left, you should see an oval-shaped glass floor. On the left middle side of that floor is the "Release Mechanism", activate that, head LITERALLY straight ahead to the steel "catwalk", and go down the stairs on your right. Once you reach the bottom of the short flight of stairs, turn right, and go through the door with 3 containers, a "healing archway", and (Log 4)
(In case you were wondering, the "Release Mechanism" turns off a force-field that is behind the door, blocking you from all those goodies!) go back up the stairs and head west through the open doors. Go through the door on the far left, and as the guide says, its in the southernmost corner of the room.(Log 2). Head through the door to the west opposite the "healing archway", just keep going straight through past the "hanging pods" room until you reach a room with a large window, through the window, you will see 3 aliens, along with (Logs 11 & 17) on each side of the door straight ahead, you need to activate the switch in front of you to freeze the aliens and unlock the doors before you can enter the room to grab the logs.

(Cryo Storage - 2 Logs) Enter "Door to Cryo Storage" turn IMMEDIATELY left to see (Log 25), after you grabbed it, look to your right, and go through that door. In the next room, look to the left and go down those stairs (from the top of the stairs, you will see (Log 16) a little down and to the right)

(Waste Disposal - 1 Log) (If you think about it, it just doesn't sound right) This one is a little tricky to find, plus its also a point of no return area. To the left of the "Robot Assembly door, there is a "Maintenance Access Teleportation Matrix" (teleporter). You end up trapped with Sally in an alien garbage chute. (anyone remember Star Wars?) Anyways, Sally gets separated from you, very shortly after, she starts opening "force-field doors" for you, after the LAST door she opens for you, you have to open a normal door yourself, go through the door and look IMMEDIATELY right for (Log 19), its VERY easy to miss!! If you hear Sally say, "We're almost out of here, I'll meet you up ahead" and you still don't have it, turn around and look STRAIGHT AHEAD!! Its against the wall on the other side of the room!!!
(to be honest, I don't think it matters if you do this before or after you take care of the Robot Assembly generator, I went through it before I did the generator, and missed it, then I saw Aqueously's guide, and knew exactly where it was, did the Robot Assembly generator, THEN used the teleporter....I was SOOOO happy I saved before I used the teleporter!!!"

(Research Lab - 2 Logs) You need to go through the "Cargo Hold", its the door to the right of the "Hanger". The Research Lab door is at the southwest corner of the map. As soon as you enter, you go down a short flight of stairs, look left and you will see what looks like Apollo 13 rocket capsule "thing", (Log 13) is to the left of that in the middle of the room just past some stairs to said "capsule". From (Log 13) turn around and go through that open door. Go through the short hallway into the big room, look to your left and you'll see a hobby horse, go to where the horses are at and you will find (Log 21) smack in the middle of the room.

Head back to the "Engineering Core" and SAVE!! [You should have 19 Alien Captive Recorded Logs by now, 22, 14, 15, 3, 1, 12, 7, 6, 8, 5, 4, 2, 17, 11, 25, 16, 19, 13, 21] I believe you can go back to get any you missed before you have to do the spacewalk EXCEPT Log 19.......the ONLY way you can go get it is if you DID NOT go through the Waste Disposal Area with Sally....moving on....

(Weapon Research - 1 Log) This is the only (Log) I have problems describing the location..Aqueously has a better description in his solution..In the Weapons Lab, if you look at your "local map", to me it looks like the letter "K" or "R" was formed by the computers, imagine its the letter "R", (Log 24)is right to the west of the "hole" in the letter....

(Experimentation Lab - 3 Logs) as soon as you get in this section, head north, you will see two "Dr. Octopus" looking chairs, (log 20) is in front of the chairs on the south wall. Follow the quest marker till you see 3 or 4 scared "friendly" aliens in a big room with another cooling machine you have to sabotage, (Log 10) is on the north wall. Follow the quest marker again, but instead of turning right to go through the door, turn left, you will see 3 tables with aliens on them, (log 9) is in front of the tables...

(Biological Research) Go around the left side until you see some stairs, go up them and around. Look to your left, (Log 18) is in kinda a sunken in control center.

(Living Quarters) after destroying the death ray, take the teleporter to the Living Quarters. From the teleporter head south until you get to a big room, keep going south til you see a hallway, then go west until you see a kinda cafeteria with 2 ceiling torrents, the last log is in there. (Log 23)

Highly MISSABLE

After you've exited most areas they get locked so make sure you pick up everything, including the recordings before you leave any given area else you probably won't be able to return. There are 25 total recordings and you won't pick them up in order of numbers as they are all randomly numbered. This trophy will unlock upon picking up the final recording in the Living Quarters. Make sure you save before you enter or leave an area so you can reload if you miss anything. Here are some Guides we highly advise you follow while playing, starting with a text walkthrough written by Harry94_:

In the very first part you're in the "Holding Cells", the first three you will come across are #14, #15 and #22 and they are all together down the corridor to your left upon exiting you cell on first level. The next three are #1, #3 and #12 are again found together in the room just North of Sally's prison cell. You will not encounter another recording until you reach the area after the next called the 'Engineering Core'. At the end of this part you should have 6/25 recordings.

Once you reach the "Engineering Core" you will find a total of 4 recordings. They are all in the same room again. You will be tasked with freeing the 4 people in the stasis chambers, next to each chamber are recordings #5, #6, #7 and #8. This is all of them for the “Engineering Core” and your total should now be 10/25.

WARNING: You must get all the recordings up until the "Weapons Lab" area before entering the Decompression chamber, don't go anywhere near until you've got all recordings up until the Weapons Lab because there’s no going back.

You've got a choice of a few doors to go through and most of them have recordings in them but for the purposes of the Guide we'll go through the doors we went in first. The first one you want to head to is the door marked "Maintenance Level" on the local map. You will want to go though here to access the "Waste Disposal". As mentioned above, you must get this before entering the airlock. There's only 1 recording in here and it's in the Southwestern area of the "Waste Disposal" local map, don't leave this area until you've got it. To leave the area and return to the “Engineering Core” go through the teleporter at the end. Your total should now be 11/25.

The next room you will want to go to is the door marked "Cryo Labs" (In here is also the "Cryo Storage" area). As mentioned above you must get these before entering the Decompression chamber. There's a total of 6 recordings in here and they are #2, #4, #11, #16 #17 and #25.

Before you can get the first recording (#4) inside the Cryo Labs you must press a button which says “Release Mechanism”. This release mechanism switch is in the very first room you arrive in on the left hand side of the glass floors which view the prison cells. Once you've activated the switch go to the direct opposite of the room and down the stairs, through the door and the recordings in here. The second recording (#2) is inside a stasis room (the one with the Ghoul in it). The next recordings #11 and #17 are inside the room with three dead humans on operating tables. Make sure you remember to get these as the door closes permanently behind you after you leave so make sure you have all 4 in the "Cryo Labs" before proceeding to "Cryo Storage" at the end of this part you should have 15/25 recordings in total.

The first recording inside "Cryo Storage" is #25 and is just to the left of the entrance you came through. The second #16 is in the very Southwest corner of the map downstairs. At the end of this part you should have 17 recordings. You will now teleport back to the "Engineering Core". At the end of this part you should have 17/25 recordings.

The next place you want to go to is the "Cargo Hold" door and the place you want to go from here is the "Research Lab". As mentioned above you must get these before entering the airlock. There's a total of 2 recordings in here and they are #13 and #21. The first recording #13 is inside the Research Lab in the room with cars and a part of a rocket from Earth. The recording is in this section by some computers near the rocket from Earth. The second recording is #21 and is is located in the first room filled with the metal ponies, it is in the middle of the room near the Alien computers. You've now got all recordings in all the rooms before entering the Decompression chamber and your total should be 19/25.

Now you want to enter the Decompression chamber to get the many Labs in which the recordings are held. The Labs are the Weapons Lab, Experimentation Lab and the Biological Lab. There's 5 recordings in these areas which are #9, #10, #18 #20 and #24.

The first Lab you'll come to is the Weapons Lab and there's only 1 recording in here and that's #24. The recording is inside the Labs main control room by some computers. The next Lab you will arrive at is the Experiment Lab and there's a total of 3 in here. The first recording #20 is in the room with the two examination chairs with metal tentacles coming off them, the recording is in front of these chairs. The second (#10) is on the far wall of the Observation Room and the final recording in this area is #9 and it is inside the room next to the abominations on the operating tables. The next Lab you'll come to is the Biological Lab and there's only 1 recording in here and that's #18, this will be your 24th out of 25 recordings if you've been following the Guide properly. The recording #18 is in the Northern most area on the second floor, it's in a place ringed with computers. Make sure that you have 24 out of 25 logs before leaving this area. After you exit for the "Death Ray Hub" the teleporter will break and you will not be able to access this area again unless you playthrough the whole ship again.

The final recording is in the living quarters and you arrive here after doing that puzzle with the generators. The recording, #23, is inside a room at the opposite end of the hallway from Toshiro Kago who you saved from the Stasis Chambers in the Engineering Core. Continue down the hallway until you enter a large room, continue heading south until you come to a another hallway, at this hallway turn right. Keep travelling down the hallway until you reach a room filled with tables and chairs, as soon as you enter this room it will be on your right. If your having trouble finding it from my description then just head to the room which is the Southwestern most room on local map. Upon picking up the 25th recording, the trophy will unlock. This trophy is a slow popper so don’t be worried if takes 5-10secs to appear.

There are 25 recordings on the spaceship. You MUST collect the first 19 before you go on the space walk. If you don't, you'll have to redo the entire DLC

I was going to collect these notes after completing the main quest of this add-on, but it didn’t work out, the doors don’t open, either this is a bug and only me, or I advise you to collect notes as you progress, especially the 19th entry. (I just didn’t collect it as I progressed)
