How to unlock the Instrument of Change achievement in FINAL FANTASY XIII - Definitive Guide

Tips before the final bosses (as you enter the cradle for the first time)~

If you havent maxed out your 3 base classes, then it might be a good idea to do so (as far as possible of course, level 10 only opens after you defeat the final bosses).

I suggest upgrading weapons onto 2nd tier upto their max level (if not already done so) and accessories if you have any money left.

One way to get money is to fight the human enemies in the city before you reach cradle (which can also be reached from a teleport inside cradle) or go hunting in the pulse wilds for gold nuggets or gold powder.

As you complete cradle you'll have a lot of annoying enemies on the way, so be prepared for some tough long-ish fights. It depends a lot on your stats so if you want it easy then grind those classes!

A few tips for the final bosses~

The team you use really doesn't matter, but this is what I had (only stating classes used):

Lightning with Com 4, Rav 4, Med 4, Sab 1
Snow with Sen 4, Rav 4
Hope with Syn 4, Med 4, Rav 4

I had the following paradigms:
Strategic Warfare
Relentless Assault
Tri-disaster
Solidarity
Combat clinic
Premeditation

I'd start out with Strategic warfare, give a few blows the time hope boosts everyone with haste, then I'd switch to premeditation, let hope boost everyone with other stat enhancers, while snow takes all the damage and lightning casting poison (yes, strange how the final bosses can get poisoned! XD). But poison really helped me out since it dug into the boss HP quite well. Beware that inflicting debuffs is difficult as the chances are very slim. As soon as I poisoned (and maybe cast other debuffs with luck) I switched between combat clinic and tri-disaster, keeping my HP high and increasing the stagger gauge. Once the stagger gauge popped I switched to relentless assault to inflict a max amount of damage.

I used this technique for all 3 bosses at the end, so you technically don't really need to change anything, just keep up the same strategy and you should be fine!

Edit:
As Mazrael pointed out in his comment, there is one attack that orphan's first form uses which has a risk of OHKO. The damage and who it attacks is random, but if you're close to beating him, try to stagger and use the eidelon (or just simply use the eidelon if you're comfortable with their damage). You won't need the summon for orphan's last form, as it's pretty straight forward.

Works for me til about half way through the second stage, then I get my controls locked off, and out of dispelga, or a one hit KO move that takes out Hope or Lightning.. best I've done so far is to the last quarter (a lot better than the first 5th I managed without this guide). so I'm going to grind a load more..

Yeah that attack is slightly unpredictable, the damage it causes is random and damages anyone on the team, but with luck it shouldn't even hit Lightning. If you have trouble and you've almost killed him, try to stagger him and use the eidelon.

I finally beat 'that' part.. definatly recommend Hope over Vanille.. as he cast Haste. What really worked for me was starting in Premeditation, getting Deprotect & Deshell to stick, before Staggering with Tri-disaster & going into Relentless Assault. using Combat Clinic to keep HP over 6k (and at the last 10% of stagger during the second stage, just going into CC to take a big hit)
I wouldn't have the Sentinel as the leader - although I did, I was likley 'asking' for the one hit KO, Fang's just my favourite character. had my team 6.5k to 8.5k hp, and around 2k in thier strength or magic stat (through weopons & accessories)
lastly, I'm certain that melee attacks disturb the one hit KO if your attacking when and shortly after it's name is on screen.

That cheap KO trick by Orphan 1st Form just took up my entire Sunday afternoon. The solution in the end was simply to bring it down quickly enough that it does't have change to use it repeatedly and therefore cut its odds of it actually working. Poision really is the best method! Using Lightning, Vanille and Hope, initially buffed out with MED/SAB/SYN and then and used COM/SAB/MED as my most offensive paradigm, managed to bring it down in under 15 minutes by giving it three doses of poison.

ummm, the OHKO is a death spell...

just use *'d Seraph accessories (from Cherub Crowns) on everyone for 60% death resist, and get a SYN with Veil and it won't ever get you (mostly :-P) COM/COM/MED and RAV/MED/SEN work, just dont expect a 5*.

I'm a bit clueless with this game, once I complete it can I go back and get all the other achievements or is it game over?

Cyklo's tip worked first time for me after every other strategy failed and got me a five star rating without even launching a single attack. Yeah it's cheap, but so is the instant death move

i was having real trouble with the 1st form of orphan,so using hope as a synergist / medic snow as a sentinal and vanille (leader) as a sabatour for the entire battle,i finally killed it with a 3 star rating without ever attacking it,basically i got vanille to poison it then just used auto hinder after poison stuck, hope would buff the party then switch to a medic and snow stayed a sentinal for the entire battle, combat clinic for the big attacks it does obviously, because i never got near staggering it it didn't do so many big attacks and only changed form twice in total, just keep it poisoned and hitting with debuffs,it fell in 12 minutes or so,just under a minute quicker than target time,oh and mallets for when it stops you casting, cheap and readily available, and if you find yourself in real trouble the technique renew will renew full party hp without the need to switch paradigm

This fight can actually be quite easy if you follow these tips.
(stupid iPad is correcting a lot of words)

Vanilla - Marlboro wand. Serapis crown (death resist) White cape
Lightning - lion heart.
Hope - hresvelgar.

Sab/med/med (vanilla/lightning/hope)
med/med/med
Sab/med/syn (initial paradigm)
Rav/com/rav

Barthandelus isn't too hard, usually I attack for two rounds and then switch to heal to get my hp over 5000. I had fang for this fight and would keep nailing high wind on him when the stagger bar was nearly depleted.

Phase 2 can be really difficult...unless you do the following.
Make sure the leader is vanille and that you have poisonga. (huge hp draining)

Start the battle off and make sure hope casts haste on you and then switch to sab/med/med. unless you're goin for 5 star for phase 2 or haste has worn off, u won't need to change paradigms.

Keep casting poisonga until it sticks, and then sit back and let your medics constantly heal while you debuff. It'll wear off eventually so you'll need to reapply it when necessary.

Don't stagger him or he'll retaliate with that stupid multi debuff poison attack. And that's pretty much it. Sit back and heal, while poison kills him.

Phase 3 s ridiculously easy. You need to hit him with deshell and deprotect. Once those stick, raise his stagger bar until it trips and then wail on his unborn ass. He should die by the end of the stagger phase, netting you the 5 star boss achievement as well.

Watch the end credits, save your game and now go get "treasure hunter" :)

I'm reading this after beating it the night before. After failing many times on the 2nd form with Lightning, Fang & Hope I decided to bring in Vanille and was surprised her poison worked on him - using poison makes this fight 10x easier. Once poison sticks just keep healing. Repeat 2 or 3 times and you should be good.

+1 Timutimu for a well written solution.

You should easily be able to bring Orphan's first form down in around 5 minutes.. For this I used Fang, Lightning and Hope. You should instantly move into combat clinic as the fight starts since he will instantly hit all your guys right at the start.

Next, switch into evened odds paradigm (sab/med/syn). You will stay in this paradigm until each of your members has 5 buffs and the boss has 5 debuffs.

After this I switched to diversity (com/rav/med). It should take you almost no time at all to stagger Orphan.

Switch to relentless assault (com/rav/rav) while he is staggered. You should be able to do mega damage to him.

As soon as his stagger is down to about 15-25% switch to combat clinic to heal everything and prepare for his big attack again.

Repeat this (minus doing evened odds.. unless he removes your debuffs) and you should have him dead during or soon after his second stagger. Please let me know if you need me to clarify anything and I will be happy to do so.

For Chapter 12, your chapter boss will be a reunion with Yaag Rosch and The Proudclad. As always, you'll want to use a party of Fang (leader), Lightning and either Hope or Vanille. For paradigms, you'll want something akin to:

  1. Relentless Assault: COM/RAV/RAV (default)
  2. Solidarity: SEN/COM/MED
  3. Protection: SEN/MED/SYN
  4. Combat Clinic: SEN/MED/MED
  5. Strategic Warfare: SEN/COM/SYN
  6. Tireless Charge: COM/COM/MED

The Proudclad is immune to all debuffs, so having a Saboteur in the mix is useless. He will start off in Annihilation Mode (on the ground), so use COM/RAV/RAV to push up his stagger bar and alternate between SEN/COM/MED and SEN/MED/SYN for healing and buffs where necessary. Once he enters Aerial Defense Mode, alternate between COM/RAV/RAV and SEN/COM/SYN, until he's staggered. Once staggered, use COM/RAV/RAV and COM/COM/MED, ensuring you change to a defensive/healing paradigm just before the stagger ends so that you can heal.

Once you get him to about half health, he will use "Limiters Deactivated", which will fully heal him and buff him, but also lower his defenses. Once he does this, stick with COM/RAV/RAV to build his stagger bar, all the while maintaining your HP and buffs as necessary. Once he uses "Oneiric Maelstrom", you may find yourself needing to desperately heal - if a party member or two go down, don't be afraid to use Renew to revive them. This is much safer than reviving them via Medics or Phoenix Downs. Other than that attack, simply keep up with staggering, pummeling, healing and buffing until he drops.

For Chapter 13, you'll get to face three bosses back-to-back to finish off the story. The first of these you have seen a few times before: Barthandelus.

Barthandelus:

Have a party of Fang (leader), Lightning and either Hope or Vanille, along with the following paradigms:

  1. Bully: SAB/COM/SYN (default)
  2. Combat Clinic: SEN/MED/MED
  3. Diversity: COM/RAV/MED
  4. Mystic Tower: SEN/RAV/RAV
  5. Tireless Charge: COM/COM/MED
  6. Relentless Assault: COM/RAV/RAV

Starting with SAB/COM/SYN, have Fang stick Barthandelus with Deprotect, Deshell, Slow and Imperil, while Vanille/Hope buff the party. Once debuffed, change to COM/RAV/MED or SEN/RAV/RAV to drive up the chain gauge, depending on whether you need healing or not. Once staggered, continue with your selected paradigm until he reaches at least 400.00% stagger, then change to either COM/COM/MED or COM/RAV/RAV, once again depending on whether you need healing or not. Using Fang's Highwind when his stagger bar is about to empty is a good way to maximise damage.

If Barthandelus is about to use his infamous "Thanatosian Laughter" or "Ultima", immediately change to SEN/MED/MED to survive the assault and to heal the damage. Keep in mind that these two attacks usually come back-to-back, so don't change out of the healing paradigms until you're certain he won't launch off another attack. Healing should also always be first priority - if the HP of anyone dips critically low, you should heal them straight away, even if you're driving up the stagger gauge.

Rinse and repeat these processes until Barthandelus is no more.

Orphan (first battle):

After defeating Barthandelus, you'll be pitted against Orphan. If you want to change your party or paradigms, simply select Restart. Some good paradigms for Orphan are:

  1. Combat Clinic: SEN/MED/MED (default)
  2. Evened Odds: SAB/MED/SYN
  3. Relentless Assault: COM/RAV/RAV
  4. Aggression: COM/COM/RAV

You may also want to consider equipping some Death-resistant items (Cherub's Crown, Seraph's Crown), as Orphan does have an Instant Death attack.

As soon as the battle starts, Orphan will use "Merciless Judgement" on, so SEN/MED/MED will take the brunt of the attack. Once that is done, switch to SAB/MED/SYN, and ensure Fang sticks him with Slow, Imperil and most importantly, Poison. Given Poison takes a constant percentage of a target's maximum HP, it is highly effective against bosses with high HP. Always ensure Poison is on Orphan throughout the battle. Once he's debuffed and Hope/Vanille have buffed the party with at least Haste and Imperil, change to COM/RAV/RAV to quickly drive up his stagger bar. Once staggered, change to COM/COM/RAV to inflict maximum damage. Orphan will use "Merciless Judgement" upon leaving the stagger, so change to SEN/MED/MED before he does this.

If your stagger dropped Orphan below 50% HP, he'll combine his Consummate Light and Consummate Darkness modes. If however he is still above 50%, he will change to Consummate Darkness, which can be very painful if he remains like this for too long. Ignore buffs and debuffs and simply use COM/RAV/RAV to stagger Orphan as quickly as possible. Once staggered, you can buff and debuff before pummeling on Orphan with COM/COM/RAV. This stagger will definitely take him below 50% HP, meaning he'll now combine his modes.

In this new mode, Orphan will use "Merciless Judgement" without warning, along with "Progenitorial Wrath", which has a chance of inflicting Instant Death on your party members. This is where the Death-resistant equipment comes in handy. If someone does get hit with Death, simply use a Phoenix Down to bring them back as soon as possible. Just like before, the party will want to buff/debuff, stagger and pummel, all the while keeping an eye out for a drop in health, as healing may be necessary. A third stagger should be enough to finally drop Orphan.

Orphan (second battle):

After defeating Orphan for the first time, you'll get to fight the true form of Orphan, who is the final boss. For the last boss, Orphan poses little to no threat. Upon starting the battle, Orphan will cast Death at your party leader, giving you a few minutes to defeat him. Use SAB/MED/SYN to inflict Orphan with Deprotect, Deshell and Imperil, then to COM/RAV/RAV to drive up his stagger bar quickly. Once staggered, switch to COM/COM/RAV to deal high damage. If Fang has a Genji Glove equipped, her Highwind skill can instakill him from about half-HP. Regardless of whether you have a Genji Glove or not, Orphan can easily be defeated in one stagger.
