How to unlock the Instant karma achievement in For The King - Definitive Guide
A hex area called “the gallows” was within the “guardian forest” area in the first campaign “for the king” for me. It was a level 2 battle against the hangman and two lower HP creatures. The achievement popped after defeating the hangman.
Given this game is randomized, I’m not sure if “the gallows” always shows up in this campaign or other campaigns.

The Hangman is a scourge that will appear randomly in your game. Scourges happen - I believe - once per game day, at least on Apprentice difficulty. When you view the top of your screen, there is a segmented bar with blue and purple segments. Blue represents daytime, purple is nighttime. When a Scourge is going to appear, an icon specific to that scourge will appear on top of one of those segments. Once your day has progressed to that segment, the scourge will appear on the map, and his/her effect will take place and remain in place until that scourge is defeated.
Note that when you destroy a cultist device on the map and get the option to add a life, subtract a chaos, or subtract a scourge, eliminating the scourge this way will NOT get you the achievement.
The scourges' locations are set on the map, but hidden, so if you happen to stumble on a location in your exploring, it will be revealed, and you can fight that scourge whenever you want, though it may not be advisable to do so depending on the level. As far as I can tell, scourges that are scheduled to appear are relatively leveled to you, and present a reasonable, but not impossible, challenge. This is not necessarily the case for scourges you find. Make sure you fight scourges with a full party (3 characters ideally) with full health and full focus.
The order of the scourges you fight is random, and I'm not yet clear on whether or not all scourges are found in all games. So your two options are to start up a game, play long enough for the first scourge to appear on your timeline, see whether or not it's the Hangman, and start up a new game if not, or load up a game and just keep playing until the Hangman does appear. You'll knock out achievements for each scourge you fight along the way, as well as build up your stock of lore, so I personally recommend this method. But, of course, here on TA, we have community events that sometimes create a time crunch to grab one specific achievement, and "you'll get it naturally while playing" isn't always an acceptable solution. If that's the boat you're in, go with option A.
I personally found great success with a Blacksmith/Scholar/Minstrel team. Blacksmith has high physical damage potential, Scholar has high magic damage potential, and the Minstrel has so-so damage potential in either category depending on the weapon while also providing good support skills. I'm sure there are plenty of other combinations that work too, this just happened to be one of my first attempts and I had great success with it.

This is one of the several Scourge enemies in the game. On the timeline at the top of the screen, a timeline of turns will show you the progression of time, whether it will be day or night soon, as well as more critical indicators like Chaos or Scourge activations. As a precaution, every land biome often has at least one Scourge; certain scenarios may allow objectives such as Cult Devices or Realm Dungeons to appear once per biome as well.
The Hangman is located within the Gallows tile. Your best hint is to scour the first few biomes you start in and see if you can find his dwelling early. If activated, you will see "The Hangman" as a small portrait around the right-middle of the screen, showing that he is affecting the game rules. Specifically, he will constantly assault you with Ghost enemy tokens. The threat here is that they are often in groups of three and can curse you, damaging your stats and making things harder. The reward for slaying this Scourge is the Hangman's Hood, an artifact that increases your Critical Hit chance by 10%, increases the damage dealt to the Undead enemy-type by 25%, grants immunity to the Death Mark status, and gives you an additional 10 Vitality.

First you need to find his lair. This is a misfortune that randomly appears on the map when you pass near it, and it will also become visible from any place if the boss “wake up” and the debuff from it is activated. It looks like a place of execution with a gallows. There are three opponents waiting for you here - a boss and two henchmen. If you are 1-2 levels above him, you can defeat him without any problems.
