How to unlock the Masterminds achievement in Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox One) - Definitive Guide
*Edit 12/29/22*
Updated some information such as added tips about quick access snacks for easy health maintenance and no longer needing public lobbies for prep missions. As more updates continue to happen, I will do my best to update the information here to be relevant. Thank you to the many users updating me and the community in the comments!

It’s recommended to complete the online achievements on this version, then the Japanese stack (if you plan on doing it), before exporting your character to the Xbox Series X version. Your online character progress resets if you transfer to the Xbox Series X versions, requiring you to potentially level up and earn money again in able to complete missed online achievements in Xbox One and Xbox One Japanese versions.
As of now, you need to complete all three of the Criminal Mastermind Challenges achieved in Grand Theft Auto Online. To find your progress, you must be in an online lobby, public or private. Press , then use or to find the Stats tab at the end. Press , then scroll down to Awards. Press on Awards, then scroll down to The Doomsday Heist. Press to view all The Doomsday Heist related awards available. The three challenges you need to focus on are:
Criminal Mastermind II: Complete The Doomsday Heist in order, with the same team of 2 players, on hard difficulty, without losing any lives on Setups and Finales.
Criminal Mastermind III: Complete The Doomsday Heist in order, with the same team of 3 players, on hard difficulty without losing any lives on Setups and Finales.
Criminal Mastermind IV: Complete The Doomsday Heist in order, with the same team of 4 players, on hard difficulty without losing any lives on Setups and Finales.
While working on each of these awards, you will likely complete All in Order bonus and Loyalty II,III, and IV.
Criteria every player needs to know to avoid progress reset:
You CAN die during Preps, but CANNOT die during the Setups or Finales.
You CAN fail a Setup or Finale and choose quick restart option. If you do fail a mission, make sure it wasn't due to a death.
The quit out trick for player death during Setups and Finales is easily the most important trick to use. If a player in your crew dies, hit , then either select Grand Theft Auto V and scroll down and hit quit, or simply select another game in the recently played list. The game must be exited in less than five seconds from the moment a team member dies. The idea is similar to the Dashboard method players used for the original Criminal Mastermind on the Xbox 360. This method does not 100% work, as missions auto save checkpoints, and if you happen to die during the auto save, it automatically fails the Criminal Mastermind.
Personal in game vehicles that explode cause the game to immediately autosave. If you die due to a personal vehicle explosion, it will likely reset your progress. Credit to rafa1000house for bringing this to our attention. I can confirm this is true as both progress resets I've encountered were a result of car explosion killing us causing an immediate autosave, voiding the medal. Typically, any mission with helicopters will likely lead to potential explosion due to their heat seeking missiles.
If a player disconnects during a mission, it's advised that everyone needs to immediately quit the game using the quit out method, as this may void progress.
You CANNOT purchase prep vehicles to skip the missions and progress.
You CAN do all Preps first, then do all Setups for each Act; or do Prep, Setup, Prep, Setup until completion of the Finale. As stated in the actual challenge, you MUST do ALL Setups and Finales in order, top to bottom, starting with Act I and finishing with Act III.
Preps CAN be done in private lobbies now. This is a new update that resolves the aging frustrations of playing with randoms in a public lobby.
When doing Setups and Finale Heists, its best to go into a private lobby. There are reports of server issues in public lobbies that can cause players to disconnect from a full lobby at the end of a Setup, causing server lapses that reset progress.
When you start a Criminal Mastermind play-through, you MUST complete it with the same people in the same order before starting a new one. You CANNOT do multiple Criminal Masterminds play-throughs at the same time. Example, you can not start CMII with friend A, then start CMIV with friends B, C and D and continue progress for CMII. However, do keep in mind, if friend A was the host of CMII play-through, THEY will keep THEIR OWN progress if you decided to reset YOUR OWN by going for CMIV. So if you do decide to start a new play-through, it's best to let your teammates know.
You DO NOT need to complete every challenge with the same players for all three play-throughs. You do not need to play with friend A for CMII, CMIII, and CMIV. You CAN play with friend A in CMII; friend B and E in CMIII; and friends B, D, and F in CMIV. Just ensure you are playing the entire play-through, Act I through Act III, with the players you start each play-through with.
These DO NOT need to be completed in one session. You can play a few missions a night for a couple of weeks. Progress will not be interrupted while playing free roam, multiplayer, or other non Doomsday heists.
It's IDEAL to make sure every player doing the heist missions to be in the same organization. To do this, the player hosting the missions needs to hire each player as a body guard after registering as a CEO. This helps the system keep the group as a unit, as servers can split players up prior to missions starting. I would recommend players all being within the player owned facility before starting each mission to avoid sync issues.
Tips and Tricks:
Basic start up procedures include:
Using the Interaction menu:
Purchasing a Facility:
Registering as a VIP, CEO, President and hiring heist Crew:
“The Standard FPS-2 control setting is the best option because it allows you to sprint while having the interaction menu open.”

If someone dies by an explosion of another player's car, the progress will be reseted to the car owner, because the game saves right after the explosion as it prevents players duplicating cars and destroying your vehicle without paying any fee.
my 2 friends lost their progress because their Kuruma was exploded while I was driving in two different missions. So your worst enemy is the helicopter!
Missions you need to watch out:
- Rescue ULP - use Kuruma to block the foundry entrance and leave it when the helicopter appears, so it won't blow your car. Destroy it using heat seekers.
- Rescue Agent 14 - use Kuruma to kill the first wave of enemies after leaving the first area with Agent 14; but be warned: one helicopter will spawn, so hide your car while your teammates destroy the helicopter.
- Escort ULP - just use your Kuruma and don't escort your teammates at all. This misison is very buggy and your can explode from nowhere. I was miles away from helicopters and my car exploded for no reason, so just stay in Paleto Bay, or run to the forest, so you will only deal with enemy cars.

Welcome to my mega guide for all preps, setups and finales in this heist update. For more general info, please see oxHARMONxo's guide. I focused on missions, how to do them efficiently with minimum amount of retries. You will have to repeat them, don't expect to finish Mastermind during your first attempt. This achievement is not easy, treat it with respect and don't be overconfident as it is the easiest way to die.
The guide is split into five sections. First small section answers the question why it is better to start it as CEO, then I put general info which should be taken into consideration before attempting it (with advice what to buy and what to do in general), then 3 heists split into three sections. This guide is very long (13 A4 pages in .doc with regular formatting and TA bbcodes!), that's why it is hidden in many spoilers. If you are looking for video guide, please see GTASeriesVideos on Youtube, as it is the place with best videos covering CM runs.
Due to high amount of time spent collecting the data and writing this up, I will be thankful for all comments and constructive criticism. If you have better way of doing a mission, please include it in comments and if it is really better, I'll update my guide and give you credit for your contribution. If you feel that it is bad guide, it is perfectly fine to give negative vote but please be so kind and include in a comment why you feel it is bad and how can I improve it.
Thank you for your time. With this in mind, let's get started! Good luck!

My friend and I did the barrage/atv thing thinking it would be best to get in the driver and passenger seat not using the turrets but the game forced me to use the tri barrel, but we had no problem what so ever dealing with the enemy.the tri barrel (front facing turret) is so powerful it’s not funny.
Only real threat was if the person driving flipped us because the gunner (s) would be thrown from the vehicle, everything gets wrecked by that gun, when at the airfield just keep your distance and shoot with the tri barrel or jump out and use snipers, when enough enemies are dead it will say drop off the barrage.
The tank - you can use the insurgent with the 50. Cal on its roof just go slow around corners (it’s parked just outside the building with the things you need to destroy, watch out for the guard)
The tank driver focus of the road and enemies in front, the grenade launcher operates help out where you can and the turret person main job here is shooting the helicopters giving chase.
Escort ULP - when getting the rocket truck we climbed on the roof and sniped 90% of the enemy then went in with only a few left.
The truck I drove ahead of the ULP to the globe at the gas station for the first part then when ULP caught up I’d move us further down the road, he has more than enough health just stay ahead of him so he keeps moving and the person shooting can get missile locks. The truck is really armoured and most of the time the ai shoot at the rocket system not the cab, if there’s a road block pass it then drop the stands to fire that way the ai is shooting the back where they can’t hit you. (you still may get hit for the heli so just keep watch)
When he turns right off the highway he will fly over the beach/water stay on the beach. You don’t have to stop before activating the rockets just hold right d-pad the stands will drop allowing the rockets to fire.
Big thank you Mikasz for the first rescue ULP, my friend and I were stuck on that mission until I read the start of this the other day.
he got the ladder marker then he doubled back into that hallway area, got the mission done first time doing that only have final heist left for two player.

We weren't going for Criminal Mastermind but we did the heist on hard. Just a tip here if it can be of any help for the Barage setup mission with 3 or 4 players...
For this mission, two players selected the following vehicules we used as escort : a fully upgraded and heavily armored halftrack including quad AA guns, and fully upgraded, armed and armored weaponized tampa including dual miniguns, no mortars or rockets as they can be dangerous in case of friendly fire.
First, we got to the observatory and took down the cargobob from afar with sniper rifles equiped with explosive rounds, then the remaining choppers with the halftrack and rocket launchers.
Second, we got to the barage and set the motorcade in motion. Players one (driver) and two (gunner) in the halftrack as vehicule 1 to clear the way ; player three in the barage as vehicule 2 ; player four in the weaponized tampa as vehicule 3 for support. We sticked to this formation for the rest of the mission. The gunner in the halftrack literally tore to shreds almost all enemy jeeps (1 second of firing) and choppers (3 to 5 seconds of firing), with the tampa finishing with its miniguns those who miraculously survived, which weren't many...
Third, to kill everything at the airstrip we used both the halftrack and tampa (miniguns), having their rear facing the enemies so the drivers would be less exposed to enemy fire. The barage stayed not far behind.
Four, once the airstrip was clear we got to the final destination using the same formation.
None of us were killed and damage taken were minimal at worse.
We guessed that in a 3 players run, only the halftrack should be used as escort
We also guessed the halftrack could be used as escort for the Chernobog in the Escort ULP mission in a 4 players playthrough.
Also, we found the weaponized tampa very useful in the Khanjali mission. Each player had one and we slowly pushed through the enemy forces using our dual miniguns, with the rear of the cars always facing the enemies, so the drivers are less exposed to enemy fire and using mortars for enemies getting to close.

This solution is to address the constant 'You Criminal Masterminds XXX progress has been reset' issue. After finally completing this with assistance from some other players who had this solution, I have been unable to find it online. So i do not wish to take credit for finding this solution, but wish to share it.
For a guide or solution to the overall achievement, please see one of the other great solutions.
So this is something you must be religious with to ensure no issues. Following this method we had absolutely no false resets.
Preps
These are easy. You must be in a public lobby. Can be the infamous 'NAT type lobby'
Setups and Finale
If you used a NAT type lobby for the Preps, (although it may be best to do this anyway) all players should now change to story mode to cause a game save, and then quit the game completely. Moving from a NAT type lobby does seem to leave several game issue that this resets.
Now restart the game and load into story mode. The player hosting the heists should now setup an invite only lobby. From there invite all players to the lobby, invite to the organization and start each missing in turn. At the end of each mission you may occasionally end up in different lobbies. The host can just invite in again.
If at any point you notice an issue such as someone failed to join first time or disconnects, even when not on a mission, conciser restarting the game. We had one reset due to this so for the time it takes play it safe.
Finally, pick a word. If you join the lobby screen and your progress is not active, at the start or end of the mission you see a reset, you die, say this word clearly. Do not mute your mic. All players must quit the game. Familiarize yourself with this sequence of buttons and do not rush.
The last thing I will mention, although not about the resets, if the game glitches and will not move on, closing the game and starting the mission again will work unless you are really unlucky. However a better option if available to to cause a fail, such as destroying a vehicle that must survive. Just make sure the whole team knows what you are going to do. Only one person do it and be absolutely sure none of you are going to be killed by doing this. Then you can quick restart.
Hope this helps some of you like it has help me. Good Luck.

Since this solution is about keeping the tracker working, I will post my thoughts in here...
If you are going for this achievement, follow the guide to the letter. We got lazy, skipped inviting people into the same invite only world and Organisation, I just sent the lobby invites, my friends joined from SP and the tracker got reset. Really, not worth skipping a few minutes of prep just to do all the missions again.
Also, we encountered a weird glitch. When one of us died, we quit the game entirely to dashboard, loaded back in, worked just fine.
Problem was, when we got killed in our Kuruma, destroyed by rockets - explosions.
This, in my opinion, can only happen to you twice. ACT II - rescue ULP. ACT III - rescue the Agent from the docks. Avoid the helicopters, always get out of your car and shoot it down.
Since it's your own personal car, game saves when it gets destroyed. This means, if you, or somebody else, gets killed in your car by its destruction, it's over for you. This happened to us twice at the same spot.
My point of this is - KEEP GOING. KEEP GOING. KEEP GOING. When we finish this run, 2 of us will have done the challenge. These 2 will be the hosts, owners and drivers of all cars. This will ensure we won't get reset anymore and have to start all over again.
