How to unlock the Never Tell Me the Odds achievement in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - Definitive Guide

i take no recognition for this solution, a guy posted a video which i used and it worked a treat so im posting it hoping it will help a few people struggling with it, choosing the right path and the 2 shortcuts is crucial, i only made it with 3 seconds to spare, he gives a good tip for the huge jump u have to make too.

Made it with 8 seconds to spare. I didn't like that part in the beginning where he was pinballing between the pylons. I used the ramp and ridge route and got through just fine.

That damn Warthog is a massive pain in the ass to drive.

Where he said he edited it, i got a checkpoint with 2mins 30secs lol - Ramp jumping ftw and precision driving and hitting the shortcuts are the key to succeed +1

i wonder if the person who gave a negative vote is going to post with a reason why they voted negative to a video which has helped people with this achievement, or is that person going to be a coward?

They are as always cowards mate, its annoying but as soon as i posted my halo guides onto TA 4 neg votes in 40seconds... Usually when any vid i post on TA goes up... Neg vote instantly. Everyone is entitled there opinion, but with anonimity people do it out of spite / jelousy? Dont get down by it you didnt even make the video or write his name in the solution. Its not like its your content they are disliking just your solution, i already +1'd or id do it again. Most people appreciate you putting the link up

im not bothered about my votes or anything like that, i already stated it wasn't my video and u can see the guys name in the video, i was talking in general about people giving negative votes as your example shows, it's about time T.A. alter the way voting happens, maybe they should show the gamertags of those who voted negative and they should also have to give a reason for the negative vote for the vote to count, this would stop people just voting for no reason, i have seen people vote negative before who actually said why they voted this way.

I got this last night with 3 seconds remaining. By the way, you should hide your achievements from lists so that they do not appear on the homepage. That way, only people viewing the achievement can see your solution.

i have alreay reported one comment and it has been removed, i have also explained my idea of having just positive voting on solutions to T.A. to a mod, this way u either vote for it or not all, this way nobody can keep voting negative just for no reason.

Just got this. Took me forever, The checkpoint halfway through didn't activate for me my first several runs. Once I finally got the checkpoint to pop up it made it a lot easier. I think the key is to slow down just a little if you want to checkpoint.

olde fortran 77 I tried this video many, many times and couldn't shave enough time off due to the "pinballing" sections. Used the ramp jumping method and got it the first time. I recommend the video by LiLItalianboy991 .
Note: If you use the video posted above, your last save always puts you back in the Warthog bay. If you use the jump method, you get a savepoint somewhere after Foehammer. Maybe you should copy your Halo savefile to somewhere else in case you hit the savepoint without enough time on the clock.

Managed to do this following the route from the video, so thanks for that. Still did it, even though I fell out twice! Hit the road-block at the end with minute 24 spare and legged it down the side with about 3 seconds to spare. Thought this achievement was gonna be the death of me, one of those ones I'm actually proud of getting!

For the big jump near the end, all you have to do is drive off the ramp at full speed and then let go of the analog stick in mid flight. You should land safely.

it's not that rodster, as i have said i don't take credit for the video the guy who made it deserves the credit but if he had posted it himself people would still have given it negative votes, i still think they should remove negative voting, if the video helps then vote, if not don't vote, a lot of solutions i have seen which have helped me and i voted positive on still had people giving negative votes, mainly by friends of people who put up solutions themselves.

The people that gave you negative votes likely just did it out of spite. Maybe you pissed them off in the forums or something. It could even be the friends of the gamers that wrote the other solutions so they could get their friend closer to the top (and this can be done without the gamers who wrote the other solutions knowledge). Or maybe they just wanted to be asshats. The first solutions for 6 or 7 achievements for ME3 that were written ALL started off with a negative vote. Someone thought they'd be cute and just down vote every achievement they unlocked. If people don't have to back up their reasons for voting negatively, the children WILL come out to play. That goes for anything in life hehe.

I've actually started my solutions by asking people to up vote the other good solutions for an achievement. I don't look at solution writing as a competition. I'm here to help my fellow gamers out and we help more gamers out by having more than just a few solutions (providing they give different methods and tips).

I think anyone that votes either way should be forced to comment. There have been many long discussions on this over the past few years and the general consensus is to keep it the way it is now. Most people are either too lazy to comment or too chicken shit to show they voted negatively.

If I give a negative vote I always leave a comment. However, I send them a PM and give them a week or so to fix what is wrong with the solution before I am willing to downrate someone's work. I also let that person know that if they fix the reason I voted negative that I will definitely come back an give them a thumb up. I would love it if people that negative on my solutions would leave a comment and tell me why. That way I have an opportunity to fix my solution and make it better.

Anyway, thanks for posting the video. You don't have to be the one to make a video, but you were kind enough to post it here on TA after you found it and that helps gamers out just as much as if you made the vid yourself. I don't have this achievement yet (I'm about to start The Maw on Legendary in 5 mins), but the video has shown me a few things that I know will help. So thumb up from me.

cheers shiner, i still think they should remove the negative vote though, it makes more sense to just have someone either vote positive if the solution helps or don't vote, makes more sense to me.

i have never given a negative vote, even if the solution i look at is either wrong or of no help.

I understand what you're saying about the negative vote. I really do. But I think we need them. I rarely give negative votes. I think I have maybe twice? Most people are willing to change their solution for the better. People like you who are actually here to help out other gamers and don't really care about votes are willing to go back and change something to make your solution better. Believe it or not, some people aren't like that. They just like the pretty, shiny TA badges. There are some really bad solutions out there and some of them have been given enough positive votes that the better solutions are now hidden. Therefore the bad information is getting more exposure than the good.

Now, don't get me wrong, that is an extreme case. I've seen it maybe twice in the 3 years I've been here on TA, but it does happen. Negative votes should be a red flag for people that rarely use solutions. I don't use guides or solutions until I've finished a game unless I am absolutely stuck and I feel I've exhausted all my options. Then I will check out a solution. I know there are many people just like me and they want to avoid spoilers and try to figure out the game on their own. How are they supposed to know if a solution has good info if all we had were positives?

I could go on forever about this (you obviously don't know that I like to talk a lot or you'd have never replied back to me! haha), but that's just a few reasons why I think we need both positive and negatives. It allows us (in most cases) to determine which solution has the best info. I think if we had to comment every time we voted up or down, that we'd take care of most of the chronic negative voters as they'd want to avoid confrontation by the people that agree with the solution. It would also make it easier on the TA staff to determine whether or not a negative vote is warranted when we bring it to their attention.

Anyway, I've talked too much already. I can definitely understand the reasonuing behind removing negative votes all together, but I think they do more good than harm as they're a helpful tool to better gauge which solution we think is appropriate. Especially for gamers that use them as a very last resort and they want as little info as possible to get through the part of a game a solution covers.

FYI, I still haven't made it to the last run in The Maw. I played about halfway through the level last night on Legendary, but I had to save and quit and go to bed. I'll get it today hopefully hehe.

God I suck at anything that requires driving skills. I've been at this for 2 days now (actually a total of about 3hrs) and I just can't seem to make it in time. If I'm having a good run, something stupid always happens an wtfpwns me lol. I can slalom through the pillars fine, I can make the short cuts with np, I just can't put it all together. When I reach the part where we run to the ship I normally have about 50 seconds to 1 minute so the achievement is shot. I'll keep at it, but I'd really like to have something to break right now. I wish there was a check point at the Foehammer scene or something... nah, scratch that, that'd cheapen the achievement.

Okay, let's see if that worked. Usually when I rant about something in a game I go back and accomplish the task after a couple more tries lol.

So I get to the Foehammer point and I have 2 minutes 43 seconds left right before the conversation between Cortana and Foehammer (immediately before the timer disappears for a few seconds). "Hellz yeah! I got this!" I think to myself. And then I see that I popped a checkpoint! Frakking, w00t, bitches! Now it doesn't matter if I get it this time or not because I have a really good time at the halfway point which is where I'll start every time now! After spending a total of about 4hrs on this Warthog run, having to start from the Warthog bay every single time, I FINALLY catch a break. Ahhh life is gude, mang... life is guuuddee!

Now, what happens? I pop the achievement on the same run lol. It figures that after all that time I spent on this God-forsaken, final trench run on teh Deathstar I mean Pillar of Autumn that I finally pop a checkpoint and I don't even end up using the damned thing. Oh well. The achievement hath been pop-ed and I am d-u-n - DONE - with this part of Halo. For-friggin-EVAH! Now I go back and do my Library run in under 30 mins and thy Halo game shall be completeth. Ha!

BTW, I think the check point only happens if you have a decent time at the halfway point. Like DreamKiller SKX got a checkpoint at 2:30. I'm guessing Bungie wants to make sure you have enough time to finish the Warthog run before allowing any checkpoint here which is a good move otherwise many people would have to start the entire level over if they didn't quit and save before starting this section.

If we can get some peeps to list how much time they had left on the timer when they got a checkpoint, that would be some valuable info to add to the solution. Just a thought. So far the least amount of time left that we know of is 2'30". Anyone get less time than that?

Shinerbock88 I think you are right, you will only get a checkpoint if you are running on time, otherwise if you didn't have enough time left you would have to redo the whole mission. The run I got the checkpoint was also the run I got the achievement. I misunderstood the advice for the big jump and kept looking up. You have to look DOWN, like a birds eye view from above your Warthog. When I did that I landed on all four wheels and at full speed.

I found a way to shave at least 5 seconds off the time on the video. Right at the start, pass through the big opening and turn right into a narrow gap and the turn left under a beam, picking up a health kit and getting in the Warthog. This one is easier to drive through the small opening, slow down as you do and make a sharp left turn. You can be halfway up the first hill before the 5 minute countdown even starts. This gave me the margin I needed because I couldn't keep up with the guy who made the video.

My other piece of advice is do it on solo. When you get to the timed run save and quit and exit to the dashboard. Make a copy of your gamesave to USB then go back into the game and carry on. That way if you get really frustrated trying to get this you can always load up that save another day to have a fresh crack at it.

Not as intimidating as it sounds. As long as you get the checkpoint right after the Foehammer part with 2:30 on the clock, then you should be good. I didn't take any of the shortcuts and still made it with at least 10 secs to spare. At the end, going outside along the wall really seals the deal. So, I would probably do the first section until you get a checkpoint, then just reload until you get it.

Thanks for video! 4 secs to spare with few silly mistakes! Learn to make those jumps by looking down and you are ok :)

The video was a massive help but I eventually gave up doing the pillar slalom in the first section and just gunned it straight down the middle. The slalom itself wasn't the problem, but I found I rarely had the speed to make the jump at the 0.48 section of the video, and making the jump in the high up first section was never a problem. I still did the second slalom section though, once you get the right rhythm it's no problem.
Like others have said, aim to get to the mid cut scene point with over 2.30 left and get that checkpoint. That's the key.

Tip: make a manual save before the warthog run by saving and quitting, then back up the save to the cloud. This way if you are too slow you dont have to do the full level again if you have bad checkpoints

The above video is pretty near perfect with the exception of taking the "shortcut tunnels." They aren't any faster than going straight through the tunnel as long as you pass the side of the pillars that don't have the little ramps.

Taking the video shortcuts I finished with 1:10 left. Skipping the shortcuts I finished with 1:30 left.

Me three. Not sure why you've gotten so many negative votes. I figured the solution above was better with the number of positive votes vs. negatvie ones. Tried it for about an hour and failed. Skipped the shortcuts and did it within 15 minutes. Here's a positive vote from me.

I agree with the others - followed the video with the exception of taking the shortcuts! I even flipped and fell out of the Warthog (I didn't care for that achievement) once before the mid sprint check point and finished with a little over 6 seconds to spare.

fyi - for me, the Warthog would flip regardless if you're looking straight-up at the big jump and I'm not sure if it's because I never let off the gas but letting go of the gas completly seemed to've prevented me from flipping...

You don't look up at the big jump, you look down and keep full throttle. If you actually took off straight (weren't bouncing around and such you should land with all 4 wheel on the ground and hitting at the same time.

As for the "short cuts" I have never used them. Making the turns slows you down.

The videos are a big help but here are 5 helpful tips which should increase your chance of unlocking this achievement (For co-op and solo):
> PRACTISE - Save and quit when you get to the warthog at the start of the countdown. If you fail, you can dashboard and start the escape again. Try to get to Foehammer with at least 2:30:00 on the countdown. If not achieved, dashboard IMMEDIATELY before it can autosave and start again.

> GOOD CONTROL - Drive as straight as you can when going along the narrow parts and try not to stop too much. If you flip you WILL have to start again as this wastes time.

> DON'T USE SHORT-CUT TUNNELS - They will waste precious seconds and take longer than just going the normal route.

> AVOID FLIPPING OVER - Again, this is a must and going for big jumps your're not going to make doesn't help. For the huge jump at the end, fully accelerate and then let go just before the warthog goes over the end of the platform.

> DON'T FIGHT AT THE END - An easy way to bypass the enemies when you have to run to the Longsword is by going along the left side of the left barriers (jumping is quicker), as the covenant kill the flood for you. smile

By doing this i managed to finish the mission with 1:09 left on the timer.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Just in case anyone was wondering, this Achievement will unlock prior to the final cutscene playing. You HAVE to reach the top of the first ramp you run up with more than one minute on the timer. If you reach the end where you have to ditch the Warthog and run the rest of the way and you have less than 1:20 on your timer you're better off restarting because there's a good chance you might get distracted by something and will reach the ramp just a second too late and will have to start the ENTIRE level all over again.

While driving through, you'll want to restart if you get ejected from the Warthog. Every second counts here after all. The shortcuts don't seem to help much unless you're an expert at making those tight turns, which says a lot because the Warthogs handle like garbage in this game. They're too...floaty.

Legendary has no actual effect on the warthog circuit in terms of difficulty so long as you don’t let the sentinels shoot at you for too long. Three tricks to getting this easy. First, drive carefully. Like I said above, you have plenty of time, so don’t flip your vehicle. It takes less time to detour than it does to get going again. Second, look for the side openings on the curved tunnels between rooms. These are nice little shortcuts if you can hit them right. Last, don’t stop when Foehammer messages you. Keep going and it will pause the timer shortly, which gives you a decent 20 second bonus. Within a few tries, you should be able to get this.
