How to unlock the Life Saver achievement in Maid of Sker - Definitive Guide

This guide will be lacking a lot of detail as it’s meant for those of you who have already finished the game once. I hope you find it helpful nonetheless.

Make sure to play on at least Easy difficulty as Safe mode disables some achievements.

Pay attention to your health. You take unavoidable damage twice during the game; close to the start, and when using the tesla coil. If you don’t heal you might get killed in one hit or by breathing in purple gas.

There is one enemy to avoid once you reach the outside, but other than that you can run safely all the way to the minecart puzzle.

Ground floor -> Basement
- Run to the Sker Hotel
- Go straight past the guy crying for help and into cathedral and pick up the first cylinder
- Exit the cathedral and enter the door left of the crying man – leading to the basement elevator
- Call the elevator, reset the power, then take the elevator
- Heal whenever you find a nervous tonic, as your health will be yellow
- Follow the basement until you reach the outside

Forest -> Gardens
- Continue through the forest until you reach the cemetery
- Interact with the gravestone on the left
- Follow the path
- Complete the door/minecart puzzle (power > door > power > door)
- Get through the garden and go to Sker Point
- Help the dog, because why wouldn’t you?
- Get the cylinder from the cage (East-West-East-North)
- Go and collect the Phonic Modulator
- Complete the gate puzzle (power > gate > power > gate)

Ground floor -> First floor
- Get the Kraken key from the chest on the stage
- Walk through the main hall
- Use the Kraken key on the door to find the beer tap
- Use the beer tap in the bar (1-3-2-4)
- Go up the newly revealed ladder
- Through the double doors and to the right
- Pick up the crank wheel at the end
- Go the ship/bell puzzle (3-2-4-1) and get the crest piece (1/4)
- Get the Music key from back room at the end of the corridor
- Go through the broken wall and place the crank wheel on the machine
- Go inside and turn the switch to open red room
- Pick up the crest piece (2/4) from the red room

Second half of first floor
- Go to the bathroom (room 108) and pick up the crest piece (3/4)
- After falling through the trap door, quickly open all hatches to find the valve
- Go to the library and solve another power puzzle
- Pick up the crest piece (4/4)
- Go to the hall and place the missing pieces
- Run to the elevator when the gates open as the monsters will run for you

Second floor -> Attic
- Take the elevator to the second floor
- Go to the right and try to grab the key
- Open the double doors and trigger Abraham on the left
- Get past him and pull the two levers next to the fountain to open the gates
- Stun him twice using the tesla coil and take the Bird key from him
- Be sure to heal as the tesla coil might have damaged you
- Run to the bottom left of the map and get the cylinder behind the bird door
- Take the stairs next to it to the attic

Attic -> finishing the game
- Solve the piano puzzle (fish-dog-bird-cage-deer)
- Grab the final cylinder in the basement and go through the music door
- Follow the same path as earlier until the father kidnaps you
- Escape the ritual camp and climb the ladder
- Trigger the “boss” by saving for the first and only time (this won’t void the achievement)
- Complete the “boss fight” (you know the power puzzles by now)
- Get the Crown key from the stage and open the door
- Use the projector (I think you need to)
- Continue on and wait outside the locked door until a monster opens it, this is next to the two blocked pathways
- Go through the door, and open the vent to get to the main hall
- Give the cylinders to Elisabeth at the top of the stairs to finish the game

Please let me know if there are any details you’d like me to add.

Love the format!
Bonus: Can you recommend good spots for the 5 allowed saves for hard mode, please? Also, you could probably "re-post" this guide under the hard mode achievement, with the save spot tips included.

Nice format! I was also thinking of making a similar list actually. :)

On easy do you have more time on the first floor’s crushing walls trap? Since the right port is random I failed it at least 4 times on normal...

It’s definitely a little sketchy, but on my hard playthrough I had enough time to open every hatch and get out safely.

Do we know what achievements get disabled by “Safe Mode” at all?

By Drazer76 on 24 Oct 2020 23:51
@Draz, disabled in safe mode:
- Beat the game on hard (obvious)
- Don't save
- Don't get hit
- Don't use stun gun
- Use all stun gun charges

@Skrubits:
""- Get the cylinder from the cage by following directions in the ceiling""
Always East-West-East-North 👍

Thanks. I noticed this as well but left it out of the solution for some reason. Updated.

About the crushing walls trap, in my last two playthroughs I turned around and searched the hatches that are behind you first and it worked both times. The one time that I started with the hatches that are in front of you, I died and it killed my no save run. Make of that what you will.

No, the hatches are completely random, it’s equal chance to get it in any hatch. The water hinders your legs so you waste time walking to the other side if it’s not there as opposed to walking there when it’s closer after you check the front ones, you just need to be fast.

So, just to clarify, you have to do this in one sitting?

Yes. Fortunately it only takes 60-90 minutes to finish.

The only way to get this with no saves is on Hard because you have to interact with the phonograph to spawn Isaac. On any other difficulty, interacting and saving are bound together. I don't recommend doing the achievement on Hard though.
Overall I thought this was not difficult on Easy. The only points I felt real stress were the crushing trap and zapping Abraham. It was my final achievement and my fourth time through so I felt great satisfaction when I uninstalled this disappointing game after getting 100%.

I learned from another user that you can avoid the room with the crushing walls.

After you grab the item from the rope and it gives you the optiom to "rotate" or "B" to close, press "b" but also press back at the same time. You step back as the floor opens and you can avoid that altogether.

I advise you to combine it with the passage on Hard, in order to reduce your time in this game. On Hard, you don't have to save before the final boss, as the game asks: "You have N saves left" Therefore, you can just go in and out of the gramophone, and save in any convenient place. I did it, really forced, in the cemetery, after I opened 1 of the 2 locks at the very end. Because at that moment, a healthy uncle appeared, and the enemy, who hung out right in front of the second switch, prevented me from rushing and opening the second lock. I had to run back to the saveroom, save and re-enter, so that all the enemies would return to the rep.

Thanks! I’m glad you like it. This is definitely my preferred walkthrough format. I might do that later.

You can actually save 10 times on Hard.

My saves:
1) Outside, after getting through the basement
2) After getting the Phonic Modulator
3) After completing the boat puzzle on the first floor
4) After getting the fourth crest piece in the library
I would recommend a save somewhere in between here as well
5) In the basement, after the attic part
6) At the final boss fight
7) After the boss fight

Save after completing a couple of tasks and you should have enough saves to get through the game without much hassle.

The achievement description on the site is wrong, but it is shown correctly on Xbox: you have to complete the game with one save or fewer. The final encounter doesn’t start until you save at the nearby gramophone so your only save must be at that point in the playthrough.

This is best done on easy after having been through the game once or twice. Here is my full run with commentary if you want to see what path to follow and how to deal with any specific sections:

+1 from me. Very comprehensive and easy to follow and most importantly fast! Other vids were above 2 hours. Wish u had a hard run walkthrough too. Due to my heart problem jump scares makes me suffocate , would be cool to know what to expect and where to go.

Yes, other than maybe a few smaller enemies in a couple of other places and the smaller enemies noticing you a little more.

You have to complete the game while only saving once. The only time you can save is in the room where father will start playing the piano and you have to stop moving when he stops playing. It is required to save here to trigger the guy to appear.

It is best to complete the game several times prior to attempting this. Pick up all health items and phonic modulator charges that you can find to be safe. And I recommend doing this on easy difficulty.

@A DEAD B0DY MAN You MUST use the last phonograph to spawn the "piano boss". It's the very last you will find in the game. At the end of the game you will come to a room with four switches, two double doors and a piano.

Here's a video with the exact timestamp of the room: https://youtu.be/4JIQ_KWwejg?t=10940

Here's a video with the exact timestamp of the phonograph: https://youtu.be/4JIQ_KWwejg?t=11036

This is the ONLY savepoint in the game that you can use. It will NOT void the achievement.

When I did this achievement it took me around 50 minutes since I already knew what to do.

Estimates for a first playthrough are 4 hours, though as Insane pointed out, once you know what to do you can smash through it pretty quickly

So now here it says without saving. Looking on console says saving one time or less..now there is something about triggering last boss u need to use a save I read....? So can I save once or not at all unless forced too.

I played this game day 1 and the achievement always said "complete the game saving one time or less". So I don't know why trueachievements says without saving unless they changed the wording right before release since its required to save in piano room to trigger father to appear.

You do not need to save at the last phonograph at all on hard mode. On hard mode you can choose to save at the phonographs or not, if you choose not to save you can still listen to the phonograph (and on the last one, trigger the boss). So it’s possible to get the “less” in “one time or less” only on hard mode.

I prefer doing this on EASY MODE. Since u have only 1 save. I did my first save at the end where u fight Elizabeth's father at the hotel. I got the Achievement after I beat the Game. The only problem I had was getting passed Abraham on the 2nd Floor. took me awhile to sneak passed him. everything else was easy to do. I made a Full Walkthrough showing u how to do it. Hope this Walkthrough helps. Thanks :)

This is where you really need to know the crooked developer scripts. If you want to beat the game in this mode, the only MANDATORY save you need to make is on the final boss.
